Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research is aimed at finding out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru in transforming Active into Passive Sentences and Vice Versa. The research data were collected in January 2017. The subject of this research were class XI IPA 5 and XI IPA 6 consists of 68 students. The data were obtained from a test to the students in the form essay. The results administrated of the research showed that the second year students’ ability at SMAN 8 Pekanbaru in the transforming of active into passive sentences got the mean score of 62.3, and in transforming passive into active sentences got the mean score of 59.9.Keywords: Students’ ability, Transforming, Active sentences, Passive sentences

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 11 Pekanbaru in comprehending Narrative texts. The number of population is 256 students divided into nine classes. The researcher used random sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples were 54 students. The needed data were taken from the students’ score in comprehending narrative texts. The test comprehends five narrative texts of which all text has eight items or 40 items all together. The time allocation was 120 minutes. The result of the study revealed that the mean score was 65.56 which indicated that the students were in good level of ability. The highest mean score (73.7) was in finding references. The lowest mean score (51.48) was in finding the meaning of vocabulary.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts

Abstract

Abstract : This research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using think-pair-share in teaching reading descriptive text of the first year students of SMAN 1 Tempuling in the Academic Year 2016/2017 in reading descriptive text. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. This research used one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument of this research was a reading comprehension test in the form of multiple choices. The population of this research is the first grade students atSMAN 01 Tempuling. There are 161 students in six classes. For the sampling the writer took one class based on the cluster random sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of data analysis showed the mean score of pre-test was 65.07 and the mean score of post-test was 67.20. The results of the data analysis illustrates that there are significant effects of using think-pair-share on the students’ reading ability.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aims to find out the ability level of the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in writing recount texts. The population of this research are the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru. The number of sample is 21 students who are chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data are collected using a writing test which contains one topic about “unforgettable experience”. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of the students’ ability in writing recount texts is 72.14. It can be stated that the ability of the second year students of SMK Taruna Pekanbaru in writing recount texts is good. Based on the result of the students’ ability in each writing aspect, the lowest score is in grammar aspect (64.68) and the highest score is in fluency aspect (80.55).Keywords: Study, Writing Ability, Recount Text.

Abstract

Reading English text is very important because it gives usan opportunity to gain knowledge. In English learning, being able toread English text well is a necessity. Therefore, good ability in readingEnglish texts is very important for the students. Reading processinvolves the interaction between readers and the texts. In otherwords, reading is an activity which makes the readers’ minds active.In reading activities, the students need to understand not only theirtext books but also any kinds of printed media such as: magazines,newspaper, etc. However, the students often feel bored when theyread because the texts are too long and contain many difficult words.Therefore, they get difficulties to understand them. As a result, theirability in reading English texts is low.

Abstract

Reading is one thenecessary skills that foreign languagelearners must achieve. Reading is not as simple as learning to spelland read sentences, but it is more complex than that. Readinginvolves the process of decoding, predicting, and many otherssimultaneously so that the reader can comprehend the text well.However, reading has become a ghost upon the students since itrequires the students to find some information within the text but thestudents are lazy to pay attention to it. Therefore, it is quitechallenging to teach reading. Good teaching has to apply a goodstrategy to encourage the students to be involved in the classactivities. One of the strategies is using semantic mapping. Accordingto Thomas, H. Estes (1999) Semantic Mapping is a strategy thatallows the students to organize their prior knowledge in these formalrelations, and thus provide themselves a basis for understanding whatthey are about to read and study. Semantic mapping provides agraphic structure of the knowledge that can be used to organize newideas as they are understood.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract: Writing is an important language skill that students should learn in school. Commonly, writing among students takes less attention in the process of its activities. They tend to take a long process and unorganized result. The aim of this descriptive research is to find out the ability of the third year students of SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru in writing analytical expository texts. Beside that, this research also aimed to identify the most difficult and the easiest aspects of analitycal expository texts for the students. The participants of this research are 35 third year students of SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru. The data was collected by giving a written test to the students individually. The students were asked to write a good paragraph in term of analitycal expository text. Before doing the test, the students were given a model of analitycal expository texts to remember them about a good form of analytical expository texts. There were five aspects that being assessed in this test, they are grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, organization and fluency. The data were scored by three raters. In analyzing the data, the rater used analytical scoring system that assesses five aspects of writing. The research finding shows that the students have good ability in writing analitycal expository texts with the mean score of 69.5. The easiest aspect for the students in writing analytical expository text is mechanism, while the most difficult aspect is fluency.Keywords :Analytical Expository Texts, Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this research is to know the effect of Snowball Throwing Method on the Speaking Ability of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Kunto Darussalam. This research was pre-experimental design involving 30 students as a sample chosen through cluster random sampling technique. The data were gained before and after the treatment implementing Snowball Throwing Method. The students were given pre-test and post-test. The average score for pre-test was 40.75 and the average score for post-test was 61.11. The data shows that there are an increass from the pre-test and the post-test. The data analysis shows that the t-test is higher than t-table (17.424> 2.045)at the significant level of 5%. Therefore, alternative hipothesis is accepted and null hipothesis is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Snowball Throwing Method on the Speaking Ability of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Kunto Darussalam.Keywords: Effect, Ability, Snowball Throwing.
