Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ perception and challenges in lteaching and learning process through Pow Toon software. Qualitative data are gained from classroom observation, questionnaire, and interview. The qualitative data are analysed by assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data to the theory, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The result of the research shows the students' perceptions of learning through this kind of software and describes the challenges found by both the teachers and the students. Thus, it is also found out that learning by using animation video also make a learning process more interesting. However, one of the challenges that the students found in learning through the animation video from Pow Toon software is the motion of the animation itself that distract students’ concentration; therefore, the teachers who will use the media should consider best instructional technique in the teaching and learning process. In addition, the duration when the explanation on the video is too fast. So they need to extra concentrate to the material itself. Yet, the use of digital media in teaching and learning process is one of innovative ways and it is a necessity for the millenium era.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are not only criteria of making test items for students, they also have to be implemented in daily basis especially in the teaching and learning process. Students can use the skills when they are familiar with them. In order to make the students familiar with the use of HOTS in the classroom, the researcher assimilates critical discourse analysis (CDA) and debating technique to foster the students’ ability in using their HOT skills. The use of the skills is seen from the activities of analyzing, evaluating, and creating that are done through the implementation of CDA and debate technique. Technology is also used here since the students have to enrich their knowledge on the motion debated by searching some relevant issues online. The sample of the research is 32 students of the fourth semester who are studying speaking skill in the English Education Study Program of Pakuan University. The research shows that the assimilation of CDA and debate technique can make the students familiar with the use of higher order thinking skills which are analyzing, evaluating, and creating. This paper suggests that teachers should use the assimilation to foster students’ use of HOTS.

Abstract

Reading is one skill that should be master by the students who want to learn English. However, students often find difficulties while learning English. To solve the problem, students should mastered four language English skills, and one of them is Reading. However, based on the preliminary data taken by the Researcher, it shows that students often did not know what they read. They are not aware of their own reading process. To solve this problem, the students need to know what kind of strategy that they should use while reading. The appropriate strategy that student should use when read is the metacognitive strategy. This paper entitled Metacognitive strategy on students’ literal and inferential comprehension is conducted to know what kind of metacognitive strategy used on students’ reading comprehension, especially their literal and inferential. The aims of this study are to know what kind of metacognitive strategy used on students’ literal and inferential comprehension skills in L2 reading and how are the use of metacognitive strategy on students’ literal and inferential comprehension to their reading skill. There were 3 strategy subscales or factors; Global Reading Strategies, Problem-Solving Strategies and Support Reading Strategies. Results revealed that participants reported frequent use the third metacognitive-strategy types stated by Mokhtari. K And Reichard. The method of this research is qualitative research. Abstract

Teaching speaking is one of the important parts of foreign language learning. The ability to communicate in a second language is a key to the success of the learner to master English language and to his success in their real life. The fact that cannot be denied is that sometimes students feel reluctant to speak because of shyness and fear of making a mistake. Three-step Interview technique is one of the techniques from cooperative learning that has many positive effects. This research is conducted to find out the effect of using Three-Step Interview technique on students’ speaking ability. It is conducted online at Pakuan University. In this research, a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test is used. There are 30 students in the first semester as samples. The data are taken from pre-test and post-test. Some steps are done to analyse the data and the design of the t-test formula is applied to get the final result. Based on the data calculation, it shows the t-test value is 19.7. The results of t-test and t-table with d.f = 29 at significant level 0.05 is 2.04. It shows that t-test value is higher than t-table (19.7 greater than 2.04). It means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, there is an effect of using a three-step interview technique on students’ speaking ability.
