In recent years the process of reform and innovation in higher education has been witnessed. Indonesia has also implemented the problem of based assessment almost throughout college in the fatherland, focusing on human resource development. Methods adopted to follow the qualitative study principle against ten students at one of the schools in Bogor. This research is limited to the students without even seeing the washback effect on the teachers. The objective of this report was to observe the washback effect during teaching activities in a spoken English class. The study proved that a student's point of view assessment affects the teaching process and the speaking skills in the classroom.

Assessment literacy, the thorough understanding of assessment, is essential in education. However, the development of teacher assessment literacy in Indonesia has been alarmingly slow. This study investigated the development of teacher assessment literacy in English classes using a descriptive qualitative research design with 33 items related to basic assessment concepts. The results showed that there has been no significant change in the literacy level of English teachers in Indonesia. This low literacy level has not been seriously addressed by the government or education units, which has had various negative consequences for students and teachers alike

Many experts undeniably acknowledge the effectiveness of story-retelling activities in improving many aspects of learning. This case study investigates how story-retelling activity impacts the student’s communication strategy. The study involved a teacher and a five-year-old student at an Islamic kindergarten. Data was gathered through direct observation and interviews. The teacher’s activity in telling a story and the student’s retelling activity were recorded. Then, the utterances produced by the teacher and the student were transcribed and compared based on the SNAP procedure proposed by Strong. The assessment had four criteria: story length, error type, comprehension type, and story grammar. The assessment explained to what extent the student understood the story told by the teacher. With his understanding, the student struggled to deliver the story using a communication strategy. It was found that the student’s story length was 27% of the teacher’s story length. He made four types of errors, performed 83% factual type comprehension, fulfilled all components in the story grammar, and applied both avoidance and compensatory communication strategies. The results of research data analysis show that retelling activities have triggered the implementation of communication. From a language education perspective, communication strategy is part of communicative competence.

Assessment is central and holds essential role in language learning from which the result of the teaching and learning are derived. It shows that the ability of language teachers in assessing their students is crucial. This study explored the assessment literacy of in-service TEYL teachers in Bogor by employing narrative case study. The subjects of the study were 19 English teachers around Bogor. In collecting the data, CALI (Classroom Assessment Literacy Inventory) and FGD (Focus Group Discussion) were employed. The data gathered from CALI were then scored and analyzed, and FGD data were coded based on the assessment literacy standards from which conclusion were derived. The findings reveal that teachers have poor level of assessment literacy. Consequently, teachers must update themselves by conducting continuing professional development. HIGHLIGHTS: Assessing Young Learners is complicated and challenging for Indonesian teachers because of the demand of the Curriculum 2013. Assessment literacy is central in English language learning from which teachers can assess their students and communicate the results to the stakeholder. Continuing Professional Development is an important action that can be done by teachers to increase their assessment literacy.
