Abstract

Around 170,000 urinary tract stones (UTS) occur in Indonesia every year. The incidence rate of UTS is related to the source of drinking water. Recurrence of UTS can increase mortality and treatment costs. The purpose of this study was to find out the factors that cause urinary tract stones based on water characteristics. This type of research was analytical observational, using a multiple linear regression analysis design with a sample of 50 respondents selected using purposive sampling techniques. The characteristics studied using univariate analysis were water consumption characteristics, water sources, respondent health, water content, urine color, and urine composition. The regression analysis studied were the variables of PH, treatment, mineral water potable, taste water, well water source, soundness, tension, color, and clarity with the incidence of UTS. The results of the regression analysis showed that the p value (1.75) was greater than alpha so it can be concluded that there was no significant influence between PH, treatment, drinking mineral water, flavored water, well water source, soundness, tension, color, and clarity with the incidence of urinary tract stones.

Abstract

Abstract

Patients suffering from beta thalassemia major experienced iron overload due to hemolysis, increased iron absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, and primarily due to repeated blood transfusions. This iron accumulation was exacerbated by the lack of a physiological mechanism for the body to naturally eliminate excess iron. One of the main complications of this condition was iron toxicity, which could damage various organs, including causing renal dysfunction. The persistence of this condition was associated with an increased risk of kidney injury, which could potentially lead to acute kidney injury and renal complications. The objective of the present study was to ascertain the correlation between serum ferritin levels and eGFR in adult patients diagnosed with beta thalassemia major in order to achieve the third focus of Sustainable Development Goals (SGD’s) in good health and well-being. The present study was a quantitative research study that utilized an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. It was based on secondary data from the medical records of adult patients with beta thalassemia major at the Department of Internal Medicine, Universitas Airlangga Hospital. Subjects were selected using consecutive sampling. The statistical analysis of the correlation between serum ferritin levels and eGFR was conducted using Spearman tests. A total of 62 adult patients with beta thalassemia major were include this study, with mean age of 26 years. The majority of participants (42 patients or 67,7%) had serum ferritin levels below 1000 ?g/L. All of Subjects (62 patients) had eGFR within the normal range, all were classified as G1 (> 90 mL/min/1.73 m²). The Spearman analysis results showed a weak positive correlation between serum ferritin levels and eGFR with a correlation coefficient (r = 0.277) and a p-value of 0.029. Conclusion: There is a weak positive correlation between serum ferritin levels and eGFR in adult patients with beta thalassemia major.

Abstract

Background: Stroke remains a leading cause of disability and mortality, with ischemic stroke being the most prevalent type. The high incidence of ischemic stroke is associated with various risk factors, both modifiable and non-modifiable. In Indonesia, limited public awarness and data availability contribute to the increasing burden of ischemic stroke. Objective: This study aims to identify the risk factor profile of ischemic stroke patients in the Inpatient Unit of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya. Methods: This retrospective descriptive study utilized secondary data from medical records of patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke between January and December 2023. The variables analyzed included age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and smoking habits. A total sampling method was applied to the medical records of ischemic stroke patients admitted to the Inpatient Unit of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya, during the specified period. Results: Based on 412 collected medical records, the results showed that the most prevalent non-modifiable risk factor was male gender (55.1%), followed by age 45–60 years (44.42%). Meanwhile, the most common modifiable risk factor was dyslipidemia (71.04%), followed by hypertension (66.5%), diabetes mellitus (33.33%), and smoking habit (25.97%). Conclusion: Dyslipidemia was the most prevalent risk factor, followed by hypertension, male gender, age 45–60 years, diabetes mellitus, and smoking habit.
