Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of Alpinia purpurata K. Schum rhizome extract (APRE) supplementation into tris-egg yolk extender on the sperm quality of Bali bull after freezing. This study used experimental method with a completely randomized design (CRD), consisting of five treatments, denoted as P0 (semen diluted using 100% Tris-Egg Yolk (TEY)), P1 (semen diluted using 98% TEY and 2% APRE), P2 (semen diluted using 96% TEY extender + 4% APRE), P3 (semen diluted using 94% TEY + 6% APRE), and P4 (semen diluted using 92% TEY + 8% APRE). Semen quality was assessed both before and after freezing, using several indicators such as motility, viability, and abnormality of sperm. The antioxidant activity of RGE was determined using the DPPH (1,1-diphenils-2-picrylhydrazils) technique. The data were analyzed using ANOVA with further analysis using post hoc tests in the SPSS 25 program. The results showed that APRE has strong antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value 38.004 μg.mL-1. Meanwhile, this research has shown that the addition of 6% RGE in the tris-Tris-egg yolk extender was able to maintain sperm quality before and after freezing. Keywords: Alpinia purpurata K. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of the combination between water clover (Marsilea crenata) and red galangal rhizome (Alpinia purpurata) on sperm quality of hyperglycemia model mice. Mus musculus were randomly divided into eight groups: non-hyperglycemia (P0), hyperglycemia (P1), metformin 0.375 mg.kg-1 (P2), hyperglycemia with M. crenata extract dose 0.09 mg.g-1 (P3), A. purpurata dose 0.20 mg.g-1 (P4), combination of M. crenata (0.09 mg.g-1) - A. purpurata (0.20 mg.g-1) (P5), combination of M. crenata (0.09 mg.g-1) - A. purpurata (0.40 mg.g-1) (P6), and combination of M. crenata (0.18 mg.g-1) - A. purpurata (0.20 mg.g-1) (P7). Hyperglycemia mice were induced by streptozotocin 145 mg.kg-1. STZ induction and oral extract addition were carried out for 20 days. Sperm quality parameters observed in this study included motility, viability, and concentration. Sperm quality data were statistically analyzed with One-Way ANOVA followed by the Tukey HSD test using the SPSS 23 for Windows program (p<0.05). This research demonstrates that adding M. crenata, A. purpurata, and their combination for 20 days can significantly increase motility, viability, and sperm concentration in hyperglycemia-model mice. The combination of M. crenata and A. purpurata in the ratio of 1:1 was considered effective in improving the sperm quality of hyperglycemia model mice. Keywords: A. purpurata, hyperglycemia, M. crenata, oxidative stress, sperm quality.

Abstract

Rivers are vital freshwater habitats that face threats of degradation and climate change. Mahseer fish, a key species, is in decline. This study predicted Mahseer fish habitats in Central Java using the Google Earth Engine and the MaxEnt machine learning algorithm. Environmental predictors, including NDVI, elevation, slope, river order, temperature, and rainfall, were extracted from Sentinel, SRTM, MODIS, and CHIRPS data. The model identified river order as the most influential variable (73%), followed by elevation (18%) and rainfall (8%), with an AUC score of 0.7, indicating fair accuracy. Suitable habitats were located in upstream river orders (1–3), typically at higher elevations. These findings provide spatial guidance for conservation planning, such as identifying critical habitats, prioritizing upstream areas, and establishing seasonal fishing ban. This approach supports biodiversity protection and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals by offering a scalable tool for freshwater ecosystem management. Using MaxEnt with GEE shows promise for rapid, and cost-effective species distribution modeling in data-limited tropical regions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the protective effect of aqueous extract of basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum) on the sperm quality of monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced mice. This study used 30 male mice (aged 4-5 weeks old and weighing 25-35 grams), which were then randomly divided into five groups: P0 (healthy male mice), P1 (male mice induced with 4mg/kg BW MSG), P2, P3, P4 (male mice induced with MSG and given aqueous extract of basil leaves (O. sanctum) 300mg/kgBB, 500mg/kgBB, 700mg/kgBB for 14 days). At the end of treatment, all mice will be sacrificed and cauda epididymis was isolated. The obtained semen was analysed for sperm quality, including motility, viability, concentration, and spermatozoa abnormalities. Data analysis used one-way ANOVA and continued with the Duncan test using SPSS for Windows. In this study, the administration of 700mg/kg BW aqueous extract of basil leaves (O. sanctum) could improve sperm quality by increasing motility, viability, and concentration of sperm and also alter the sperm abnormality of MSG-induced mice.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate strategies for the utilisation of nano technology-based ablution water waste in integrated farming systems comprising catfish, tilapia, gourami, iridescent shark, and water spinach. Utilising an interdisciplinary approach, this study not only examines the effectiveness of water treatment technology, but also seeks to empower pesantren human resources to achieve technical and economic independence. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of nanotechnology-based water treatment technology, the utilisation of the results for productive cultivation, and the empowerment of human resources in the Islamic boarding school community. This research was conducted at the As-Salafiyyah Asy-Syafi'iyyah Tambakberas Barat Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, East Java, from August to October 2025. The findings of the study demonstrate that the integration of electrocoagulation, zeolite-based nanofiltration, and ozonation technologies is efficacious in enhancing the quality of ablution wastewater. This assertion is substantiated by a substantial decline in pollutant parameters, specifically: The BOD decreased from 78 mg/L to 24 mg/L, with an efficiency of 69.2%, the COD decreased from 39 mg/L to 17 mg/L, with an efficiency of 56.4%, and the TSS decreased from 76 mg/L to 25 mg/L, with an efficiency of 67.1%. The utilisation of treated water as a cultivation medium yielded favourable outcomes, manifesting in the accelerated growth of water spinach plants. A notable augmentation in plant length was observed, escalating from 10.2 centimetres at seven days post-planting to 39.8 centimetres at 28 days after planting. Concurrently, the number of leaves increased from 9 at 7 days after planting to 38 leaves at 28 days after planting. Furthermore, the fresh weight of the plants exhibited a substantial increase, rising from 3 grams at seven days after planting to 37 grams at 28 days after planting. Furthermore, treated water has been demonstrated to support the growth of various fish species, including patin, tilapia, gurami, and catfish. The fastest growth was exhibited by tilapia and catfish, reaching 27 g and 18 g at 28 days after planting, respectively, with a final length of 14.83 cm and 13.25 cm, respectively. The present study will examine the level of technology acceptance among Islamic boarding schools. Keywords: Nanotechnology, Ablution Wastewater, Aquaculture, Hydroponics, Islamic Boarding School

Abstract

This study analysed the effect of starfruit leaf extract (SL) on the testicular histology of mice exposed to MSG. This study used 25 male mice with a body weight of 25-30 grams and an age of 3-4 weeks. Mice were grouped into five groups: K(-) (healthy male mice), K(+) (male mice induced with MSG 4 mg/gBW), P1, P2, and P3 (male mice induced with MSG and SL extract (A. bilimbi) 250mg/kgBW, 500mg/kgBW, 750mg/kgBW for 21 days). Following the completion of the treatment, the mice were euthanised via cervical dislocation, and the testicular organs were collected. The left testicular organ was used for histological observation of the testes, with parameters including the percentage of spermatogenic cells, Leydig cells, seminiferous tubule diameter, and germinal epithelium thickness. The right testicular organ and SL extracts were tested for antioxidant activity using the DPPH method. Data was analysed using the SPSS program with one-way ANOVA and Mann-Whitney tests. These results indicate that the administration of SL extract at a dose of 750 mg/kgBB can increase testicular weight, seminiferous tubule diameter, germinal epithelium thickness, number of spermatogenic cells, and Leydig cells due to MSG exposure.  The results of the testicular antioxidant capacity test showed the highest %inhibition of 45.65% at the first dose.
