Abstract

Virtual materiality has become a reality due to technological advancements. This affects the evolution of architecture. Land utilization in residential designs is currently unrestricted. Humans still exploit natural land and food supplies to build homes. Conversely, houses that merely use the land for viewing rather than traversing it are an example of inefficient land usage. In architecture, virtual materiality plays a part in creating an artificial world. In order to minimize land consumption, an architectural strategy that may introduce virtual materiality into the real world is required. Illusion is one tactic. Tricks and deceit are given priority in the illusion technique. This program is intended for home users who want to replace their natural surroundings with an artificial one. By using this method, nature can improve without requiring interference from the original environment. Modeling experiments and qualitative research are used in the research methodology. Create suggested concepts by using an architectural methodology. Rendering models and sketches are the research outputs. The findings demonstrate that home design can make use of illusion as a representation of virtual materiality. Through the application of matter illusion techniques, manufactured environments can be made to resemble natural ones. Implementing the material illusion in a trapezoidal home. Screen technology is used to do this. The center of the design is where screen technology is used to display environmental content. big horizontal and vertical sides are necessary. However, this can be a substitute for the natural environment for residents, especially in dwelling design.

Abstract

In the last 20 years, working from home (WFH) has become more common and even more popular due to the outbreak of the infectious disease COVID-19. This condition is a challenge for residences that are not designed for living and working, especially for houses that are not designed for work, such as official residences. Apart from that, there are restrictions on changing the physical structure of the building that residents must comply with. Knowing these conditions, it is necessary to pay attention to the quality of the building so that the building remains able to accommodate these activities. As a method to achieve research objectives, this research uses two strategies, namely qualitative as the dominant method and quantitative as the supporting method. Quantitative data as a grouping of resident data and as a basis for exploring data in the next stage, namely the qualitative stage. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis, to find themes related to quality spatial conditions to accommodate work activities at home. Based on the three existing unit types, the presence of other individuals constitutes unwanted visual content. In type 4, residents who work in the bedroom do not get the desired view because the distance between the units is too close. So that quality spatial conditions can be realized, it is necessary to pay attention to the following concepts: (1) Space presents the desired visual content (2) Uses furniture that is essential for work (3) Provides a personal touch (4) Windows with features that can regulate visual privacy.

Abstract

Working from home (WFH) is becoming increasingly common. Technological developments and the COVID-19 pandemic have catalyzed the development of the concept of working from home. This has caused a shift in the meaning of housing from something separate from work to something that must accommodate work activities. A proper place to work in housing then becomes a necessity that cannot always be fulfilled. This research explores how housing accommodates work activities. The study is conducted on how participants negotiate space by using and changing the attributes of the dwelling to create an ideal work setting. Interviews and auto-photography were conducted with young professionals aged 20 to 25 who have experience working from home with varying frequency. The results show that work activities take place in a variety of residential settings. Participants chose their work setting based on the type of work activities performed as well as personal preferences. Some interconnected factors that influence the work setting in the residence are the type of work activity, privacy, attributes, and atmosphere. Participants also intervene in the dwelling by using existing spaces and attributes to form ideal working conditions that meet their needs.

Abstract

Abstract: Revitalization of Pasar Seni Sukawati has become a focus of governments, aiming to strengthen the economy and tourism of Bali’s post-pandemic. After revitalization, contrasting change has emerged, where the market's identity, previously characterized by an open-traditional, has transformed into a closed, massive, and modern. Change in identity is related to issue of diminishing preservation of traditional Balinese architecture. The shift in architectural paradigms is increasingly challenging to avoid and deviates from regulations. This research aims to examine and identify changes in the concept of traditional Balinese architecture in the results of Pasar Seni Sukawati’s revitalization. The research use qualitative research strategy, data is collected through observation, use of documents, and literature review. Data analysis utilizes a descriptive criticism method, a type of depictive criticism viewed through static aspects. The research findings indicate that the static aspects of the Sukawati Art Market's revitalization still rely on traditional Balinese architectural concepts. However, in its implementation, there are several changes and adjustments to align with the current market conditions.Keyword: Change, Traditional Balinese Architecture’s Concepts, Pasar Seni Sukawati Abstrak: Revitalisasi Pasar Seni Sukawati menjadi salah satu fokus kegiatan pemerintah pusat dan daerah yang tujuan memperkuat ekonomi dan pariwisata Provinsi Bali pasca pandemi. Abstract

Over time, significant changes in social, economic, and cultural aspects have profoundly influenced the function and meaning of heritage buildings. These buildings often undergo functional transformations while maintaining their historical forms, presenting challenges in preserving their architectural authenticity and historical value. The concepts of digital placemaking and Soft City theory offer potential approaches to support the preservation of heritage buildings, emphasizing community engagement and the revitalization of historical values without compromising physical authenticity. This study employs literature reviews and precedent analyses to explore how digital technology and adaptive design can meet user needs while preserving the cultural and historical significance of buildings. As a case study, the Kebon Rojo Post Office in Surabaya is analyzed through interviews and data synthesis to demonstrate the application of Soft City principles, such as optimizing the balance between open and closed spaces and utilizing digital technology to create interactive experiences. The findings show that the combination of digital placemaking and Soft City principles can produce hybrid spaces that enrich emotional and sensory connections, promote flexibility, and enhance community inclusivity. This approach integrates physical and digital elements to revitalize heritage buildings, keeping them relevant in the modern urban context. The study also highlights digital interventions such as augmented reality, adaptive lighting, and interactive digital platforms as effective tools to strengthen the cultural and historical value of heritage sites. These technologies enable more dynamic and interactive user engagement, breathing new life into heritage buildings without compromising their architectural authenticity in the digital era.

Abstract

Among the various types of residences, the boarding house stands out as a distinctive temporary home, acting as a surrogate environment for individuals who are far from their permanent homes. Beyond serving as a place of shelter, it supports the continuity of daily life by offering spaces for rest, study, and social interaction. This is particularly significant in architectural education, where learning involves multimodal methods: visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic. These learning styles are deeply embedded in studio-based practices like model-making. However, a research gap exists in understanding how architecture students’ study activities influence spatial dynamics and territoriality in shared boarding house environments. To explore this, a multi-method approach was used, including traffic lane observations, interviews, and image documentation. Findings revealed two types of territorial infringement: one caused by academic activities such as design work and model-making, and another involving contamination and minor spatial violations during detailed model production. These infringements stem from shared ownership, limited space, and the nature of architectural tasks. The study suggests two architectural design strategies to mitigate these issues: incorporating fixed features to define zones clearly and providing semi-fixed features to accommodate changes in use. These solutions aim to balance communal living with individual academic needs.

Abstract

Paggora Water Park, a once-popular tourist destination, has experienced significant degradation in its facilities and infrastructure due to the prolonged COVID-19 lockdown. This paper examines the urgent need for comprehensive renovation and tourism design concepts to restore and enhance the park's appeal based on the opinions of Paggora Water Tourism visitors using quantitative methods, which will be analyzed using multiple linear regression techniques, ultimately providing a design concept that will fit with the service quality and visitor satisfaction. Five independent variables will be tested with the dependent variable (visitor satisfaction): tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The results of the quantitative analysis show that the variables influencing visitor satisfaction are the tangible (positive influence) and the assurance variable (negative influence). The proposed design concept aims to apply the results of survey and quantitative analysisimproving facilities or physical forms to increase visitor satisfactioncreating an engaging and memorable visitor experience. These findings also highlight the renovation process that the team undertook and the potential for Paggora Water Park to serve as a model for similar facilities facing maintenance and resource challenges

Abstract

Tongkonan, as vernacular architecture, cannot be dissociated from its cultural landscape. Tongkonan and its cultural landscape form a holistic entity that constitutes Toraja culture as a whole. However, most current research focuses solely on Tongkonan’s architectural and structural aspects. There are still few studies that explore Tongkonan’s vernacular architecture in connection with its cultural landscape, including its relationship to the culture of its people and its geographical context. This research is a desk study with the aim of formulating aspects related to further examining the relationship between Tongkonan as vernacular architecture and its cultural landscape based on theory of systems of activity and systems of setting. In addition, this paper contributes to fulfilling the 11th SDGs, covering four pillars -social, economic, ecology, and cultural. The method used is qualitative-descriptive with content analysis to analyze data obtained from the literature study. The analysis is supported by empirical studies in Kete' Kesu village in North Toraja Regency. The chosen location is an ancient village with a fairly complete cultural landscape and good accessibility. The findings show that the systems of activity for Toraja people in Tongkonan and its cultural landscape include domestic, religius, ecology and socio-economic activities. The systems of setting for Tongkonan and its cultural landscape encompass Tongkonan itself, alang, grazing area, puya, rante, saroan, paddy field, forest/kombong, farm, lantang, middle yard, Tongkonan surrounding, penanian, territory/liliq, area diamben, area ma'dika, area renge direnge, bridge, villages, settlement, pasar, graveyard, parampa.

Abstract

According to UU No. 28 of 2002 concerning Buildings (UUBG), the reliability of school buildings needs to be ensured to accommodate the learning activity of students and teachers. This issue should be a great concern, especially for special schools. This community service program aims to help non-productive communities access reliable learning facilities through visual audit assistance. The community service program consists of four stages, namely the inventory of school buildings technical data, document inspection, visual audit, and reports of audit result. The results of this community service are a report of SMPLB-A YPAB buildings condition, a report of visual audit results, and dissemination of visual audit results. This community service supports SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, particularly in the improvement of environment quality and inclusive communities within the context of school building.
