Abstract

Cikapundung is a river connecting wildlife habitat in two open green space areas; there are Tahura Djuanda and Bandung Zoo. Now, these habitats are fragmented due to intervention by urban activities in the Cikapundung River boundary. One of the proposed solutions is to develop a wildlife corridor along the Cikapundung River. The purpose of this study is to identify the landcover of the Cikapundung River, analyze the potential area which can be developed into a wildlife corridor, designing the landscape of the corridor tailored to the needs of the wildlife, and comparing the condition of the Cikapundung River boundary with Kamo River in Kyoto, Japan. Primary data is landcover of Cikapundung River boundary obtained through on-screen digitizing from satellite imagery using ArcMap. Secondary data are the biodiversity list in Cikapundung River riparian area and its ecological description. Cikapundung River border has several land cover types; the highest percentage of the landcover is tree canopy 62.2%, followed by buildings 31.0%. As a result of the comparison Cikapundung River has a more significant vegetation species; however, Kamo River has a more significant number of wildlife species. In the design planning, 14 vegetation species have been selected according to 26 target wildlife species' needs.

Abstract

Although North Bandung Area was considered as protected area and watershed area uspstream, but it has characteristic as cultivation and downstream area. An effort to improve protection function is needed to prevent changes in land use. One of them through the purchase of development rights (PDR) mechanism. The appropriateness of the PDR application on the benefit of hydrology only effective when it was carried out in zone rural area and the rural fringe. This condition was caused by land prices which exceeded from landexpetation value, therefore the owner of the land experienced impermanence syndrome. The application of Cost-Benefit Sharing Principles would helped Government of the Bandung City in the aspect of the purchace of development right for the agricultural land in KBU that entered Kabupaten Bandung Barat and Kabupaten Bandung. Whereas, for the Cimahi City it helped the purchase of development right for agricultural land in KBU that entered Kabupaten Bandung Barat.

Abstract

West Javanese Province Goverment has decided to provide 45% of West Java area as conservation and protection area. One of  the area is North Bandung Area (KBU: Kawasan Bandung Utara). This paper proposed the used of two economic instrument, namely PDR (purchase development right) and PES (payment environment service) in managing  the KBU. The paper shows that the use of PDR by  ignoring the price of the land would give a hydrological benefit to the people in urban fringe area, rural fringe area, and rural area in the netx 20 years.  Meanwhile, the use of PES intruments with incentive application to plant out tree at estate conservation (both forest and non forest land) would provide benefit for minimum 24 years renting period. Further, the analysis shows that the PDR and PES implementation at 4 regencies/city government at KBU should be considered as a good prospect, even though seeing from the finances aspect of APBD, the prospect was still less than the target.  Therefore, continous finance policy support at the regencies/city government at that KBU which aimed to provide environmental protection and agricultural farm (pro-environmental budgeting policy) should be considered as emergency needs. Keywords: conservation area, land use, economic incentive, PDR, PESs

Abstract

In general, community forest management is still limited to the management of individual farmers so that it affects diversity, especially in the form of stands. This study aimed to explore the stand structure and composition characteristics and develop a model for estimating the potential stand volume at the Citragaluh community forest management unit with 55 observation plots based on a combination of slope and density classes. The data taken includes slope; plant species; plant coordinates; planting pattern and spacing; tree diameter, tree height, and canopy density. The results of plot observations showed that the cropping pattern of Citragaluh Community Forest Management Unit (CFMU) consisted of monoculture (10.9%), mixed stands (20%), agroforestry (29%), dry fields (27.27%), wet fields (9%), bamboo stands (1.8%) and built-up area (1.8%). The trees species found were Jeungjing, Mahogany, Teak, Tisuk, Sobsi, Akasia, and Puspa. Based on the results of stratification, diameter distribution, and stand volume, mixed gardens were the best cropping pattern. This research proves the role of community forest as a transition between plantation forest and natural forest based on the stand form and composition. The stand volume potential estimator model chosen was linear with the equation Y = 0.074X1 + 2.924 X2 - 1.679 where X1 = slope and X2 = Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The values of R2 models are 51.3%. The average potential for the Citragaluh is 119,835 m3/ha, which tends to be higher than other community forest studies.

Abstract

Abstract. Hernawan E, Rosmiati M, Lastini T, Mustari E, Kandar M. 2025. System dynamics scenarios for sustainable oil palm management toward Indonesia’s 2060 net zero target. Asian J Agric 9: 402-414. Indonesia’s palm oil sector plays a crucial role in national economic growth. However, it faces complex and interconnected challenges, including maintaining its significant contribution to GDP, supporting the expansion of biodiesel production, complying with the European Union’s deforestation regulations, and fulfilling commitments under the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) by 2030, as well as the national target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. This study aims to identify an ambitious yet realistic pathway for sustainable palm oil plantation management through the development and application of a system dynamics model. The research uses secondary data sources, including national palm oil production statistics, demographic trends, economic indicators, and policy documents related to palm oil governance and climate change mitigation. The Indonesia Sustainability of Oil Palm Plantations Management (ISOPPM) model was designed to simulate the impacts of policy interventions focused on promoting the use of organic fertilizers, distributing superior oil palm seedlings, and expanding B40 biodiesel production. The model’s accuracy and reliability were tested by comparing simulated results with historical data from national statistics. The results indicate that under the ambitious scenario, crude palm oil production could increase by 81.3% compared to the business-as-usual scenario. In comparison, plantation area expansion could be limited to 6.27%, enabling the sector to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as early as 2048. Furthermore, this scenario demonstrates the potential to mitigate forest biodiversity loss through more efficient land use and improved agricultural practices. Overall, the validated ISOPPM model indicates that with appropriate policy support and technological improvements, Indonesia’s palm oil sector can significantly enhance productivity, minimise deforestation risks and biodiversity loss, and contribute meaningfully to national climate goals, ensuring a balance between economic development, environmental protection, and long-term sustainability.

Abstract

Quantifying the existence value of post-mining conservation areas is essential for justifying their legal protection and securing conservation finance, yet such assessments remain scarce in Indonesian tropical settings. This study estimates the existence value of Lati Petangis Grand Forest Park (Tahura Lati Petangis/TLP), a conservation area established from former coal mining land in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan. The Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) with a Willingness to Pay (WTP) approach was applied to 96 visitor respondents. Results show a weighted mean WTP of IDR 178,486 per individual with an 87.5% participation rate. The existence value was estimated at IDR 21,284,188,625 for the visitor population and IDR 752,608,083 for surrounding local communities, yielding a combined total existence value of IDR 22,036,796,708 per year, equivalent to 2.29% of the total economic value under the moderate scenario. The high existence value reflects strong public support for preserving this post-mining landscape and provides empirical grounding for conservation policy and Payment for Ecosystem Services mechanisms at comparable restoration sites across Indonesia.

Abstract

Today, smallholder forests in West Java - Indonesia play an important role as suppliers of domestic and industrial wood needs. However, with forest managers who are not yet professional and the easy conversion of land use into non-forest, smallholder forests cannot guarantee the sustainability of wood supply. In supporting the implementation of sustainable forest management in smallholder forests, understanding is needed regarding the characteristics of smallholder forests. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of smallholder forest stands as a basis for assessing the sustainability of wood raw material supply. The research location is smallholder forest in Sumedang district. Data collection method is a purposive sampling method with moving plot. The results indicated that the density of smallholder forests per ha was 342.5 trees per ha, with 14 species of trees. The distribution of tree diameters ranges from 1-49 cm, with a predominant class diameter of 10-15 cm. The potential stands for smallholder forests are 32.68 m3ha-1. The cutting felling cycle is at the age of 6.5 years with a selective logging system at a diameter size of more than 15 cm, so it is not optimal and there is a tendency that it will not continue. Therefore, in increasing its sustainability, it is necessary to increase the cutting life. So, there is a tendency for community forest areas to be converted into other land uses.
