Abstract

This paper was the result of classroom action research that tried to answer the question how small group discussion technique could improve the students speaking skill and what factors influenced it. Frankly speaking, some English lecturers are only able to blame their students because of their limited skill in speaking English. In the other words, the lecturers rarely discuss about the technique used in the teaching process, especially speaking class. Though, lecturer also becomes a factor that determines whether or not the students can develop their speaking skills well. This researcher took second semester students of Accounting of Pasir P engarain University as his participant. This research was done in two cycles that each cycle consisted of 5 meetings with the test included. In the cycle 1, it was found that the students speaking skill got progress in two aspects only such as Vocabulary and grammar, while the other aspects are not well improved yet. That’s why the researcher did the cycle 2 as to improve the three aspects could not get better yet. After doing the second cycle, it was found that the students’ pronunciation, fluency and comprehension got progress. It could be seen from the speaking score achieved from the test given. The rule of friends found in small group discussion technique became the main factor that influences students’ speaking skill. Pertaining to the data analysis of the comparison of  based score with the two cycles. It could be concluded that Small group discussion better improved the students’ speaking skill at second semester students of Accounting of Pasir Pengarain University.

Abstract

The use of ICT devices for teaching English is much needed right now, because it can attract students’ motivation in learning. It is very helpful especially for pre-service teachers, the novice teachers. The aims of this research were to investigate the use of ICT devices for teaching English by Pre-service teachers, describe the ICT devices frequently used for teaching English by pre-service teachers, find out students’ perceptions towards the use of ICT devices for teaching English by pre-service teachers. This research was employed through a mixed-methods approach that integrated qualitative and quantitative research design. The data handled quantitatively were gathered via the online questionnaire, and qualitative data were collected via the semi-structured interviews and observation to the 24 pre-service teachers. The result of research showed that there were three ways in using ICT devices in teaching English during teaching practice program. First, most of pre-service teachers always used ICT devices as the source of teaching material. Second, most of them often used ICT devices as the instructional teaching. The last most of pre-service teachers always used ICT devices as the communication tools. The ICT devices frequently used during teaching English were smartphone, computer, and in focus. Most students absolutely agree if pre-services teachers use ICT devices for teaching English because it was advantageous toward students’ English competences. It can be concluded that there were three ways of pre-service teachers used ICT devices during teaching practice program; mostly as the source of teaching materials, as the instructional teaching, and as the communication tools. Three ICT devices frequently used by pre-service teachers during teaching practice program were smartphone, computer, and in focus. Students absolutely agree towards the use of ICT devices by pre-service teachers in teaching English.

Abstract

To achieve effectiveness and alignment between the needs and the ability of students, it is necessary to conduct research about the needs of management students in learning English, especially English for Specific Purposes. Before designing the material for language teaching, the teacher needs to understand the nature of the material development and the process that is typically involved if quality materials are to be created. This research was designed as a descriptive qualitative design. In collecting the data, researchers gave questionnaires and interview the first semester of Management students at the University of Pasir Pengaraian. There are 80 students as a sample to conduct this research. Abstract

In writing and publication of scientific articles, lecturers need to be present to train teachers. This is in line with the task of lecturers in implementing the Tridharma of higher education and the main performance indicators; lecturers work outside the campus. Therefore, all lecturers of the English department of Universitas Pasir Pengaraian contributed to help English teachers in Rokan Hulu in writing and publishing scientific articles. The objectives of the service activities are:(1)to increase teachers’ understanding and competence in writing scientific articles;(2)to provide assistance to teachers in writing scientific articles;(3)to increase teachers' understanding of how to publish scientific articles. The number of participants for the first activity were 25 English teachers SMP and 80 English teachers for the second activity. The results of the activities were that the teacher can write articles starting from writing article identities, abstracts, introductions, citations and references, methods, presentation of results and discussions, understanding of using the Mandeley application. Although it had not been proven that articles had been published, the teachers already known and understood the procedures for publication on journals and proceedings. Abstrak Dalam penulisan dan publikasi artikel ilmiah, dosen perlu hadir untuk melatih guru. Hal ini sejalan dengan tugas dosen dalam pelaksanaaan tridarma perguruan tinggi dan indicator kinerja utama; dosen berkegiatan diluar kampus. Maka, semua dosen prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas pasir pengaraian berkontribusi membantu guru Bahasa inggris di Rokan Hulu dalam penulisan dan publiksai artikel ilmiah. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian adalah:(1) meningkatkan pemahaman dan kompetensi guru dalam penulisan artikel ilmiah;(2) melakukan pendampingan kepada guru dalam menulis artikel ilmiah;(3) meningkatkan pemahaman guru tentang cara publikasi artikel ilmiah. Jumlah Peserta kegiatan pertama yaitu 25 guru Bahasa inggris SMP dan peserta kegiatan kedua 80 guru Bahasa inggris SMA. Hasil kegiatan yaitu guru sudah bisa menulis artikel dimulai dari penulisan identitas artikel, abstrak, pendahuluan, pengutipan dan referensi, metode, penyajian hasil dan diskusi, paham menggunakan aplikasi mandeley. Meskipun belum terbukti sudah publikasi artikel, para guru sudah mengetahui dan memahami tata cara publikasi pada jurnal maupun prosiding.

Abstract

This research is designed as a descriptive qualitative researchh. The purpose of descriptive qualitative research is to find the result of analysis from what the researcher wants to observe. The purpose of this research was to fine out the students’ writing skill in diary of the eighth semester students of English study program at university of pasir pengaraian. In this research, the researcher took 43% from total population where it means there were 26 students. The Instrumentation used in this research is writing test, the researcher asked the samples to write about their experience in diary format and gave them 45 minutes to write their experience. Based on the students’ writing in diary, the researcher asked the raters to checked their score based on the writing scoring rubric. The result found that students’ writing skill through diary in general can be classified into a good level. It can be seen from their average score in writing diary which had been scored by the raters and then analyzed by the researcher was 71.

Abstract

This investigation employs a quantitative approach and involves field research. The method utilized is a simple regression analysis with a total population of 50 students. The data was collected via questionnaires and documentation. The findings reveal that the students' optimism is at an excellent level, whereas their learning achievement is in the moderate range. Furthermore, there is a positive and significant correlation between optimism and academic performance. The results indicate that the f-count > f-table, and the table probability value is 0.000, which is smaller than the significance level of 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05), demonstrating a significant outcome. Thus, it can be inferred that the higher the level of optimism, the better the academic performance. The fact that optimism influences learning achievement provides opportunities to boost students' optimism. Consequently, teachers bear the responsibility of enhancing students' optimism, either directly or indirectly. By fostering and elevating an optimistic mindset in students, it is expected that they will enhance their cognitive processes and academic outcomes, paving the way for success.

Abstract

Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk mengembangkan, dan menerapkan teknologi Web-VR sebagai media promosi digital khususnya pariwisata trip to three angle Negeri Seribu Suluk. Dengan adanya kegiatan ini diharapkan agar program pemerintah daerah Rokan Hulu tetap terus berjalan dan juga mendorong meningkatnya jumlah pengunjung domestik maupun mancanegara sehingga pendapatan sektor pariwisata dan laju pertumbuhan ekonomi penduduk tentunya juga akan meningkat. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian masyarakat yang diupayakan adalah pengembangan Web-VR beserta sosialisasi, pelatihan, tanya jawab dan pendampingan. Untuk mengetahui ketercapaian target program pengabdian ini, dilakukan tahapan evaluasi, yaitu memberikan beberapa pertanyaan menggunakan google form untuk mengetahui tingkat kelayakan aplikasi web-VR dan pemahaman peserta terhadap materi pelatihan. Dari hasil evaluasi tersebut diperoleh rata-rata peserta menanggapi diatas 80% dengan kriteria baik dan baik sekali, sedangkan evaluasi untuk pemateri atau narasumber pelatihan hasil respon rata-rata baik sekali 7,6 dan baik 10,6. Hal tersebut membuktikan bahwasanya materi yang diberikan oleh narasumber sangat dibutuhkan oleh mitra dan sesuai untuk kondisi di Dinas Pariwisata dan Kebudayaan Rokan Hulu. Kegiatan ini juga memberikan manfaat untuk pengembangan kemampuan mitra dan sangat membantu dalam mempromosikan destinasi wisata Negeri Seribu Suluk Rokan Hulu
