Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to identify whether Flipped Classroom strategy can enhance students’ grammatical competence. EFL students still found difficulties in understanding and mastering grammar despite its central role in learning a new language. As we are living in the digital era, we can optimize digital tools in teaching and learning to assist students and teachers. Furthermore, students nowadays are tech-savvy, so it would not be very difficult to integrate technology into classroom. The participants of this research were the tenth grade students at SMAN 4 Tangerang Selatan. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was implemented as the research design with two cycles which comprised three meetings in each cycle. The cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The instruments used were test, questionnaire, observation, and researcher’s field note. The results showed that 77.14% of students passed the minimum criterion score; further, the results among pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 significantly increased. These findings indicate that Flipped Classroom have the potential to improve students’ grammatical competence.   ABSTRAKStudi ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi gramatikal siswa melalui strategi Flipped Classroom dan untuk mengetahui bagaimana strategi tersebut meningkatkan kompetensi gramatikal siswa.   Siswa yang menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL) masih mengalami kesulitan untuk memahami dan menguasai tata bahasa meskipun peran sentralnya dalam belajar bahasa.  Karena kita hidup di era digital, kita dapat mengoptimalkan alat digital dalam proses belajar-mengajar untuk membantu siswa dan guru.  Selain itu, siswa saat ini sudah paham teknologi sehingga tidak terlalu sulit untuk mengintegrasikan teknologi ke dalam kelas. Melihat fenomena ini, oleh sebab itu, penelitian telah dilaksanakan. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X di SMAN 4 Tangerang Selatan. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dilaksanakan sebagai desain penelitian dengan dua siklus yang terdiri dari 3 pertemuan di setiap siklusnya. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes, angket, observasi, dan catatan lapangan peneliti.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 77,14% siswa dinyatakan lulus kriteria ketuntasan minimal (KKM).  Hasil pre-test, post-test 1, dan post-test 2 meningkat secara signifikan yang menunjukkan bahwa Flipped Classroom dapat meningkatkan kompetensi gramatikal siswa.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe goal of this research was to investigate whether the use of the Australasian Parliamentary Debate had an impact on students’ argumentative speaking ability. The method was quantitative with a quasi-experimental design, and the participants of this research were SMAN 29 Jakarta 10th grade social students in the academic year 2017/2018. They were X IIS 2 as the experimental group and X IIS 3 as the control group, consisting of 32 students for each group. Convenience sampling was used to select the participants for this research, and the data were collected using an oral test. The argumentative speaking rubric was used to assess the students’ argumentative speaking ability in the pre- and post-tests. The results of statistical hypothesis testing, using independent sample t-test, found that the t-value was 2.23 on the significance level of 5 percent (α = 0.05), whereas the t table was 1.99 or tobserve > t table. H0 was therefore rejected and Ha was accepted. This finding shows that the use of the Australasian Parliamentary Debate has a positive effect on students’ ability to speak argumentatively.ABSTRAKTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menginvestigasi apakah penggunaan the Australalasian Parliamentary Debate memiliki pengaruh positif terhadap kemampuan berbicara argumentatif siswa. Metode yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dengan quasi-experimental sebagai desain penelitian. Partisipan peneliatian adalah siswa SMAN 29 Jakarta kelas X IPS di tahun akademik 2017/2018. Mereka adalah X IIS 2 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan X IIS 3 sebagai kelas kontrol yang masing-masing kelas terdiri dari 32 siswa. Convenience sampling adalah teknik pengambilan sampel yang digunakan untuk pengumpulan data. Instrumen dalam penelitian ini menggunakan tes lisan dengan rubrik berbicara argumentatif untuk menguji kemampuan argumentasi siswa pada pretest dan posttest. Hasil dari tes hipotesis statistika menggunakan uji T- sampel independen menunjukkan bahwa pada degree of significance 5% % (α = 0.05), tvalue sebesar 2.23 sementara t table sebesar 1.99 atau tobserve > t table. Maka dari itu, H0 ditolak dan Ha diterima. Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study is to get empirical evidence of the distribution of the higher order thinking skill based on the revised edition of Bloom’s Taxonomy in the essay question of the reading exercises in “Pathway to English textbook” for the 11th grade of senior high school student.This study uses the content analysis method to identify specified characteristics of the material in the textbook. The data of essay reading questions are collected  by using “Pathway to English textbook” and the analysis card as the data sources and the checklist table. The writer finds that the distribution of the higher order thinking level is lower than the lower order thinking level. The data also shows that the distribution of the higher order thinking skill in the essay reading questions in the Pathway to English textbook is unequal. It doesn’t treat the higher order thinking skill properly, particularly the create skill which doesn’t exist in the essay reading questions. It only gives more emphasis on the analyzed skill by obtaining the highest number among the three skills in the higher order thinking level. Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan bukti empiris distribusi keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi berdasarkan Taksonomi Bloom edisi revisi dalam pertanyaan esai latihan membaca "Pathway to English textbook" untuk siswa SMA kelas 11. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis isi untuk mengidentifikasi karakteristik materi dalam buku teks.. Data pertanyaan membaca.esai dikumpulkan menggunakan "Pathway to English Textbook" dan kartu analisis sebagai sumber data dan tabel ceklis.. Penulis menemukan bahwa distribusi keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi lebih rendah dari keterampilan berpikir tingkat rendah. Data juga menunjukkan bahwa distribusi keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi dalam pertanyaan esai membaca dalam buku Pathway to English Textbook tidak seimbang. Buku ini tidak memperlakukan keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi dengan baik, terutama keterampilan yang tidak ada di pertanyaan membaca esai. Buku ini hanya memberikan penekanan lebih pada keterampilan yang dianalisis dengan mendapatkan jumlah tertinggi di antara tiga keterampilan berpikir tingkat tinggi. How to Cite : Anasy, Z. (2016). Abstract

The scarcity of job opportunities in Indonesia has encouraged some of its citizen to work abroad; these workers are commonly known as PMI (Pekerja Migran Indonesia –Indonesian migrant workers). One of the salient challenges encountered by PMI occupied in the semi-skilled and unskilled employment, which shared the highest percentage of PMI, is limited English proficiency. This has caused a range of formidable impacts ranging from misunderstandings between the employer and PMI to making PMI less preferable compare to workers from other countries. This research aims to (1) evaluate materials used in the English training programs by BLKLN (Balai Latihan Kerja Luar Negeri -Overseas Training Centre for Indonesian Migrant Workers); (2) Identify PMI’s perceptions concerning their English language needs. Forty-five PMI in Malaysia and Thirty-Six PMI in Singapore were involved in this case study research. Findings from the study revealed that there are gaps between how English is taught at BLKLN and PMI’s language learning needs to the extent of materials and method. Hence, findings from this research put an urgent call to improvement in the English language training at BLKLN in order to meet the PMI’s learning needs.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the students’ speaking anxiety levels, find the effect of anxiety, and identify the factors influencing students’ speaking participation. This study involved 62 students in the second semester of the English Education Department, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This study employed a mixed-method design. To gather the data, a set of questionnaires was utilized based on the Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale by (Horwitz et al., 1986) and an interview. The result of the FLCAS questionnaire classified the category of student anxiety. There were 8 students categorized as very anxious level, 29 students as anxious level, 23 students as mildly anxious level, and 2 students as relaxed level. Students with mildly anxious levels and very anxious levels were interviewed to probe richer data. Further, the study found the effect of students’ speaking anxiety on their speaking participation: considering the idea they want to express, refusing to ask or argue, and being hesitant to participate. This study also found several factors influencing students’ speaking participation, such as English proficiency level, students’ low self-esteem, afraid of making mistakes, lack of preparation, motivation, the method used, and lecturer's attitude

Abstract

ABSTRACTGrounded in the Freire’s (1971) critical pedagogy premise stating that education should impact social change and reading words should be followed by reading the world, this study explores the experiences of English language teachers who teach English reading classes with the critical pedagogy approach. We employed qualitative research with a case study as the research design to dig into the depth of teachers’ perspectives. The data were garnered through in-depth interviews with four lecturers and analyzed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The present study revealed that teachers’ understanding of critical pedagogy is not explicitly stated by defining or explaining the notion of critical pedagogy. However, some stages and components of critical pedagogy can be identified, showing that to a certain degree the teachers implement critical pedagogy in their reading classes.ABSTRAKBerdasarkan premis pedagogi kritis Freire (1971) yang menyatakan bahwa pendidikan harus berdampak pada perubahan sosial dan membaca kata-kata harus diikuti dengan membaca dunia, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pengalaman guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar membaca bahasa Inggris dengan pendekatan pedagogi kritis. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan studi kasus sebagai desain penelitian untuk menggali lebih dalam tentang perspektif guru. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dengan empat dosen dan dianalisis mengikuti analisis tematik Braun dan Clarke (2006). Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa pemahaman guru tentang pedagogi kritis tidak dinyatakan secara eksplisit dengan mendefinisikan atau menjelaskan pengertian pedagogi kritis. children and parents. Thus far, these two sacred texts have been used as the basis for a children’s obedience to their parents. In this sense, being obedient to both parents, whether the ordered is obligatory, sunnah or permissible, is a must. Likewise, if parents forbid from unlawful, makruh or permissible actions, the children are obliged to obey. In this view, obedience to parents is absolute; there is no concept of self-boundary, which in psychology is valued as an important component in the growth of a healthy identity. The study found that, by using Hermeneutics of Tawhid, the interpretation of the two texts becomes more fair, namely the form of obedience of children to their parents lies in the obedience to roles and functions in the family system. When parents act as caregivers in the family, children need to obey them as the owner of the authority; conversely, when the caregiver role changes, parents need to adjust to the new situation. Through this interpretation, the parent-child relationship pattern can be seen as a bond capable of supporting the sakinah family concept. Wadud's Hermeneutics of Tawhid gives us the opportunity to read texts with a broad horizon of thinking in order to produce more acceptable meanings for those who think logically. This meaning would be more functional to be applied in everyday life in society, not the meaning that only exists in the world of ideas.[Artikel ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan kajian teks, yang fokus pada Surat al-Isra ayat 23 dan Hadits tentang hubungan antara anak dan orang tua. Sejauh ini, kedua teks suci ini  telah digunakan sebagai dasar untuk kepatuhan anak-anak kepada orang tua mereka. Dalam pengertian ini, patuh kepada kedua orang tua, apakah perintah itu wajib, sunnah atau diizinkan, adalah suatu keharusan. Demikian juga jika orang tua melarang perbuatan melawan hukum, makruh atau perbuatan yang diizinkan, maka anak-anak wajib taat. Dalam pandangan ini, kepatuhan kepada orang tua adalah mutlak; Tidak ada konsep batas diri, yang dalam psikologi dinilai sebagai komponen penting dalam pertumbuhan identitas yang sehat. Penelitian menemukan bahwa, dengan menggunakan Hermeneutika Tauhid, interpretasi terhadap dua text tersebut menjadi lebih adil, yaitu bentuk ketaatan anak kepada orang tuanya terletak pada ketaatan terhadap peran dan fungsi dalam sistem keluarga. Ketika orang tua bertindak sebagai pengasuh dalam keluarga, anak-anak perlu mematuhinya sebagai pemegang otoritas; sebaliknya, ketika peran pengasuh berubah, orang tua perlu menyesuaikan diri dengan situasi baru. Melalui interpretasi ini, pola hubungan orangtua-anak dapat dilihat sebagai ikatan yang mampu mendukung konsep keluarga sakinah. Hermeneutika Tauhid Wadud memberi kita kesempatan untuk membaca teks dengan cakrawala berpikir yang luas demi menghasilkan makna yang lebih berterima oleh mereka orang yang berpikir logis. Makna ini lebih fungsional untuk diterapkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari di masyarakat, bukan makna yang hanya ada di dunia ide.]

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tantangan dan strategi pedagogis dalam pendidikan agama Islam bagi anak dari pernikahan beda agama. Anak-anak tersebut menemui tantangan menginternalisasi ajaran Islam dan norma lingkungan sosial dan nilai keluarga. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus, di lembaga hometutoring MuslimSmart di Jakarta. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dengan pengelola lembaga dan tutor. Hasil penelitian mengidentifikasi empat tantangan utama: (1) ketakutan anak terhadap pendekatan tradisional, (2) ketidaksesuaian antara doktrin agama dan lingkungan, (3) kebingungan dengan doktrin eskatologi, dan (4) potensi memilih keluar dari Islam saat dewasa. Sebagai respons, lembaga mengembangkan empat strategi pedagogis inovatif: (1) pendekatan sensitif budaya, (2) fokus pada nilai inti agama, (3) pengajaran berbasis konteks, dan (4) penyesuaian dengan nilai keluarga. Strategi-strategi ini menunjukkan pergeseran dari pendidikan agama yang dogmatis ke pendekatan yang lebih fleksibel, adaptif, dan berpusat pada kebutuhan psikologis serta sosiologis anak. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada khazanah keilmuan pendidikan agama Islam dan dapat menjadi panduan praktis bagi praktisi dan orang tua dalam merancang metode pengajaran yang efektif dan peka terhadap kebutuhan anak dari keluarga multikultural. Abstract This study aims to analyze the challenges and pedagogical strategies in Islamic religious education for children from interfaith marriages. These children face difficulties in internalizing Islamic teachings alongside the norms of their social environment and family values. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study method, the research was conducted at the MuslimSmart hometutoring institution in Jakarta. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the institution’s administrators and tutors. The findings identify four main challenges: (1) children’s fear of traditional religious approaches, (2) misalignment between religious doctrine and social environment, (3) confusion over eschatological teachings, and (4) the potential for leaving Islam in adulthood. In response, the institution has developed four innovative pedagogical strategies: (1) culturally sensitive approaches, (2) emphasis on the core values of Islam, (3) context-based instruction, and (4) alignment with family values. These strategies represent a shift from dogmatic religious education to a more flexible, adaptive, and child-centered approach that attends to both the psychological and sociological needs of children. This research contributes to the academic discourse on Islamic education and offers practical guidance for educators and parents in designing effective and sensitive teaching methods for children from multicultural families.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain why we need to rethink the fiqh approach in fostering a sakinah marriage. To date, in various discussions about the concept of a sakinah family, both in the community in the form of religious lectures and on various social media platforms, fiqh discourse has dominated. The fiqh discourse that is the focus of this paper is the rights versus obligations of husband and wife, the age of marriage, and the ijbar rights of parents towards their daughters. In response, this study proposes an “Integrative-Mubadalah Fiqh Framework”, a paradigm that bridges the normative dimension of classical fiqh with the relational ethics of mubadalah through the epistemology of knowledge integration. This framework redefines fiqh as a dialogical and ethical discourse that promotes equality, reciprocity, and marital harmony. As a solution, the approach of knowledge integration with the principle of mubadalah or mutuality is urgent to be disseminated as a mainstream discourse in the effort to foster a sakinah marriage. Integration of knowledge in the context of marriage means synthesizing various knowledge, perspectives, data, and experiences to form a more complete picture of the issue. Therefore, one approach ,  fiqh, for example ,  cannot be enough, because other fields such as psychology, psychiatry, sociology, philosophy, and law also address the themes of marriage. The principle of mutuality allows the married couple to have an equal voice in decision-making and to share marital and family responsibilities fairly based on their respective capacities. Mutuality in marriage also increases well-being in conjugal relationships, finances, childcare, sexual satisfaction, and relationships with in-laws. Meanwhile, mainstreaming these latest concepts is vital given that marriage is the core of the social system ,  the failure of marriage will undermine the larger social system.
