Abstract

The scarcity of job opportunities in Indonesia has encouraged some of its citizen to work abroad; these workers are commonly known as PMI (Pekerja Migran Indonesia –Indonesian migrant workers). One of the salient challenges encountered by PMI occupied in the semi-skilled and unskilled employment, which shared the highest percentage of PMI, is limited English proficiency. This has caused a range of formidable impacts ranging from misunderstandings between the employer and PMI to making PMI less preferable compare to workers from other countries. This research aims to (1) evaluate materials used in the English training programs by BLKLN (Balai Latihan Kerja Luar Negeri -Overseas Training Centre for Indonesian Migrant Workers); (2) Identify PMI’s perceptions concerning their English language needs. Forty-five PMI in Malaysia and Thirty-Six PMI in Singapore were involved in this case study research. Findings from the study revealed that there are gaps between how English is taught at BLKLN and PMI’s language learning needs to the extent of materials and method. Hence, findings from this research put an urgent call to improvement in the English language training at BLKLN in order to meet the PMI’s learning needs.

Abstract

This study aimed to find empirical evidence of the use of undercover games on students’ vocabulary achievement. The study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design and purposive sampling technique. The total sample of this study was 70 students divided into two classes: experimental and controlled classes. The population of this study was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 108 Jakarta. The data was gained through pre-test and post-test. Both data from the tests were analyzed using a t-test in SPSS 25. The mean score in the post-test showed significant improvement between the pre-test and post-test. In the pre-test, the experimental class gained 65.82, while the controlled class gained 70.23. In post-test, the experimental class gained 78.20, and the controlled class gained 77.08. The test of the hypothesis showed that sig. 2 tailed was 0.076 while the determined alpha ? was 0.05, which meant that 0.076>0.05. It is supported by the result of effect size, which was 1.02 as well. It can be said that the Ho (Null Hypothesis) was rejected, and the Ha (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. Therefore, the undercover game strongly affected students’ vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

This research discussed reading skills, especially students' reading comprehension in online learning. Reading is an important activity in the learning process. However, most students only read the text, which made them not understand the content of the text, so students’ reading comprehension was not appropriately achieved. There is a close interaction between the reader and the text. Readers not only read but also have to understand the content of the reading. Students need to focus when reading a text, but with the current situation (COVID-19 pandemic), which has changed the learning process into online learning where the process has the distraction that can occur during the learning process, so it is important to know the strategies used by English teachers on students’ reading comprehension. Regarding this matter, this research was conducted on teachers’ strategies for students’ reading comprehension, especially in the eighth-grade students in Junior High School, using the qualitative method with the descriptive design. The researcher used observation, interview, and questionnaire as the instruments of the research. This research aims to describe and obtain the analysis data of the teachers’ strategies for students’ reading comprehension in online learning, the problems teachers face in maintaining students’ reading comprehension, and students’ responses to teachers’ strategies during online learning. The researcher concludes that teachers use “finding difficult vocabulary”, previewing strategy, reviewing strategy, discussion strategy, and resuming strategy so that students’ understanding of a text can be achieved during online learning. The problems teachers face are that students have limited vocabulary and lack the willingness to learn English. During the online learning process, students understand the subject matter about the text explained by the teacher, and they also show a positive response to teachers’ strategies.

Abstract

ABSTRACTGrounded in the Freire’s (1971) critical pedagogy premise stating that education should impact social change and reading words should be followed by reading the world, this study explores the experiences of English language teachers who teach English reading classes with the critical pedagogy approach. We employed qualitative research with a case study as the research design to dig into the depth of teachers’ perspectives. The data were garnered through in-depth interviews with four lecturers and analyzed following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The present study revealed that teachers’ understanding of critical pedagogy is not explicitly stated by defining or explaining the notion of critical pedagogy. However, some stages and components of critical pedagogy can be identified, showing that to a certain degree the teachers implement critical pedagogy in their reading classes.ABSTRAKBerdasarkan premis pedagogi kritis Freire (1971) yang menyatakan bahwa pendidikan harus berdampak pada perubahan sosial dan membaca kata-kata harus diikuti dengan membaca dunia, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi pengalaman guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar membaca bahasa Inggris dengan pendekatan pedagogi kritis. How to Cite: Waliyadin, Anasy, Z., Nahartini, D. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to learn more about the implementation of the 2013 revised curriculum and the independent curriculum in two Jakarta senior high schools. It also intends to ascertain teachers' opinions of the two curricula, as well as the difficulties and solutions they faced while putting the two curricula into practice. The government released an independent curriculum in 2019 to replace the 2013 revised curriculum, which was altered due to the pandemic and deteriorating literacy abilities of students. This new curriculum is being tested in a number of schools for the 2022–2023 academic year. Each school used both curricula, with four teachers from the two distinct schools participating. Qualitative approaches were employed in this study, including document analysis, observations, and interviews. The outcomes demonstrated that the tests and learning activities in both curricula were implemented precisely. The variations seen in the assignments and resources in the separate curriculum.  Making learning objectives from learning outcomes in the independent curriculum is another challenge that teachers face. Teachers, however, had a favorable opinion of the 2013 revised curriculum and projects. Based on the study's findings, it is still difficult to determine learning because of the varied skill levels of the students and the ineffective application of the independent curriculum. The objectives of the new curriculum must therefore be met by teacher preparation, particularly when it is implemented fully in 2024.

Abstract

This study discusses Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis on stereotypes of the wife's role in the household in the religious speech given at a wedding event. The purpose of this religious speech is to provide understanding to married couples regarding their respective rights and responsibilities, as well as solve problems in the household, and also to prevent and reduce the number of divorce cases. There is a stereotype of women that is synonymous with femininity, namely in the form of the perception that women are attached, that women are gentle, beautiful, easily carried away by emotions, and full of affection. These perceptions of men and women provide cultural assumptions that give different and wider roles to men and make them obtain a relatively high social value status compared to women. In relation to marriage advice lectures, by looking at the stereotype phenomenon that occurs in women, the process and occurrence of marriage advice is one of the important processes and influences the development of these stereotypes. This study uses a qualitative method using the discourse analysis technique of Sara Mills. The primary data was obtained from a long process of repeatedly listening to the marriage advice video lectures to select scenes that display stereotypes towards women in the marriage advice video lectures. The purpose of this study is to find out and analyze critical discourse about the stereotyped role of the wife in marriage in marriage advice lectures.
