Abstract

The study of exhaust H2S and NO2 gases using activated carbon has been conducted. In this study, activated carbon was prepared from mendong plant (Frimbistylis umbellaris), which was activated using zinc chloride (ZnCl2) with concentrations of 2.5; 5; 7.5; and 10 % w/v to determine the efficiency of H2S adsorption. Mendong charcoal was obtained from the process of using a modified tool. Activation was done by maceration using ZnCl2 activator (w/v) for 24 hours. The adsorption of H2S and NO2 was analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Determinations of H2S gas carried out using the blue methylene’s method for 1 hour showed the highest effectiveness of mendong activated carbon was of that at the concentration of 2.5 % ZnCl2 w/v with 80% of H2S removal. Further, the mendong activated carbon with the concentration of 2.5% ZnCl2 w/v was used for NO2 adsorption. The adsorption of NO2 gas was conducted for 1 hour using Griess Saltzman’s method. The result showed that the largest concentration of NO2 gas was adsorbed when the HNO3 concentration was 1.5 M (0.057 µg/mL). The percentage of NO2 efficiency adsorbed was at 28%.

Abstract

This descriptive research aims to explain the scope of scientific literacy in chemistry textbooks used in Surakarta. This research data are in the form of quantity from 4 categories of scientific literacy with 26 subcategories as indicators of grouping text units in textbook analysis. The data sources in this study were five textbooks for class XI with different publishers. The technique of taking the object of research uses a purposive sampling technique. Based on the results of data analysis based on the category of scientific literacy, the average results of the proportion of scientific literacy are obtained as follows: (1) Science as a body of knowledge was 69.98% (2 ) Science as a way of an investigation by 14.43% (3) Science as a way of thinking by 10.63% (4) Interaction of science with technology and society by 4.98%. The results of the fulfilment of the scientific literacy category in book A have a ratio of the category of science as knowledge: science as a way of investigation: interaction of science, technology, and society: category of science as a way of thinking that is 9:1:1:1. The ratio in book B is 6:2:0:1, the ratio in book C is 4:2:0:1, the ratio in book D is 9:0:0:1, and the ratio in book E is 6:2:1: 1. Therefore, from the results of this study, the recommended textbook for use is the book E because it includes aspects of scientific literacy that are complete and more balanced than the other four books.

Abstract

Chemical literacy has a role in helping students understand local and global issues such as the energy crisis, environment, and health. Teachers need an adequate understanding of chemical literacy to plan appropriate learning and design adequate assessment instruments. This study aims to analyze the description of chemical literacy skills in chemistry teachers at Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic Senior High School). This research is a quantitative descriptive method that describes the understanding of chemical literacy. A total of 85 teachers from 12 Madrasah Aliyah in Central Java, Indonesia were respondents. The research data were obtained by questionnaire with a total of 24 statements about the components of chemical literacy. Questionnaire analysis carried out to see the relationship between teacher understanding in assessing chemical literacy, obtained by using RASCH analysis. The results showed that the reliability of the questionnaire was 0.98. Cronbach's Alpha (α) which measures the interaction between respondents and items has a value of 0.96. This value indicates the instrument used is in perfect condition and effective with a high level of reliability so that it can use in actual research. The results showed that the teachers had not fully understood the domains and aspects of chemical literacy skills. The Wright map shows only 30% of respondents (teachers) understand the aspects of chemical literacy and apply them in chemistry learning. The results of this study suggest that policymakers such as the government and educational institutions, hold more in-house training and workshops on chemical literacy for teachers.

Abstract

Every teacher has experiences to identify and find out students who have misconceptions in their classrooms. Misconceptions that occur can differ between male and female students. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of gender on misconceptions in the lesson of the material classification and its changes. The survey-aiming method was used in this study. A total of 62 students from one of the state junior high schools in the city of Surakarta consisting of 34 male students and 28 female students were involved as the subjects in this study. Identification of misconceptions was conducted using the Two-tier multiple-choice diagnostic instrument that was equipped with the Certainty of Response Index method. The formulation of this study problem was: “How are the differences of misconceptions between male and female students in learning the material classification and its changes?” This study showed that female students tended to have misconceptions on the competency achievement indicator vis-a-vis explaining the understanding of elements, compounds and mixtures, while male students tended to have misconceptions on the competency achievement indicator pertinent to distinguishing elements, compounds, and mixtures. In general, female students had better conceptual knowledge than male students. The two-tier multiple-choice instrument could be used as an alternative instrument to identify misconceptions among students. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for educators to identify and resolve students’ misconceptions.

Abstract

Science process skills (SPS) are an important aspect of learning science. SPS help students to develop creativity in learning. Process skills such as observing, formulating questions, interpreting, experimenting, hypothesizing, applying concepts, and communicating. This study aims to analyze the need for development resources needs of science filled with science process skills. Requirement analysis of the development of teaching materials with the skill of the process of science needs to be done because the textbook is the reference a teacher in the class. The subjects matter of chemistry the study was three senior high schools in Sambas, West Borneo. Needs analysis conducted using a qualitative approach, in terms of needs in classroom learning and content of process skills on teaching materials. Data were collected by interviews and questionnaires were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that as many as 27 percents of students perceive the book used in learning has not yet trained the science process skills. As many as 73 percents of students perceive that they need instructional materials in the form of inquiry-based chemistry modules to improve science process skills. Modules are developed based guided inquiry for having guided inquiry learning stages that can practice students' science process skills.
