Abstract

Bangka is well-known as the Tin Island. Tin mining in Bangka, both on land and at sea, actually causes environmental damage. This has been a serious issue for a long time, impacting Bangkanese lives from children to adults, in addition to air pollution. That is why the purpose of highlighting the topic is to explore the elements of green literature organized in the children's book Tata Kata: Kumpulan Cerita Anak, written by several young Bangka writers. Published in 2020, it consists of ten short stories for children at age 10–12, and one of the provided themes is environment. Interestingly, the concept of ecocriticism is present within the object itself. The study employed a descriptive-qualitative method to formulate the answers to the problem. The data were obtained through observation and in-depth interviews with the authors. The data analysis technique from Miles and Huberman (2014) played a vital role to process the data set in order to acquire profound information. The findings classified the key elements of green literature in the children's book Tata Kata: Kumpulan Cerita Anak into three categories: (a) environmental citizenship, (b) care ethics, and (c) ecoliteracy. The authors fully support the existence of these elements, as they aim to raise awareness and persuade Bangkanese children to protect and care for the environment in light of the massive emerging damage. Furthermore, the young writers implicitly criticized the nature of Bangka, which is currently endangered. It means that Bangkanese children are expected to be environmental heroes/heroines in the next few years.

Abstract

This study examines the English to Indonesian translation of emotional expressions depicted in Daniel Keyes’s novel “The Minds of Billy Milligan” and its Indonesian translation “24 Wajah Billy.” The primary objectives are to describe the emotional expressions portrayed by the main character and to analyze the methods applied in translating these emotional expressions from English to Indonesian. Employing David Krech’s emotional classification theory and drawing on Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation methods, this qualitative descriptive research identifies 28 emotional classification data in the novel. Eight types of emotion classifications were identified, including 13 instances of fear, 6 instances of anger, 3 instances of hate, 2 instances of happiness, 1 instance of pain, 1 instance of guilt and regret, 1 instance of pride and shame, and 1 instance of love. The translation applies six translation methods used in 39 instances borrowing, literal, transposition, modulation, equivalent, and adaptation. Each emotion is translated using different translation methods. The application of these six methods is divided into three variants: single with 18 instances, couplet with 9 instances, and triplet with 1 instance. The literal method is the most frequently used in translating emotional expression. The translation method aims to preserve the essence of the narrative from the source language to the target language.

Abstract

The study of dysphemism remains significant because it is frequently observed in daily interactions as a way to express strong emotions such as anger, frustration, or dislike, both on direct conversations, and digital platforms. This study examines the types and effects of dysphemism in YouTube comments in the video “Two Steps Ahead” by Avocado Nicokado. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, the research identifies dysphemisms based on Allan and Burridge’s (2006) framework. To collect the data, the researcher accessed the Nikocado Avocado YouTube channel and selected the video “Two Step Ahead,” which had 49 million views and 304,726 comments. The 25 comments were analyzed as data, with relevant ones captured using screenshots and notes, and the identified dysphemistic terms were cross-checked for accuracy. Based on 25 analyzed comments, 31 dysphemistic words and phrases were identified. The data revealed the following types of dysphemism: 9 are categorized as taboo terms, 4 as profane swearing and oaths, 1 as comparisons with animals, 1 as dysphemistic epithets, 7 as imprecations and epithets, 1 as -IST dysphemism, and 8 as terms of insult. Based on the data, taboo words and phrases were the most frequent, followed by insult terms and imprecations and epithets, mostly used to insult and mock Nikocado, though some expressed shock and admiration. Dysphemism can affect people's perspectives. It also provides emotional release, affecting how individuals express frustration or surprise. While generally negative, dysphemism can create closeness in informal contexts but may also deepen polarization and reinforce existing biases.

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines the application of Nida’s (1964) formal equivalence theory in machine translation, with a focus on the structural and grammatical aspects of CNN headlines translated by Bing Translator and DeepL. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, analyzing translated headlines related to the 2024 United States Election. Data was collected from CNN’s official website from October to November 2024, and translations were obtained from both machine translation tools. The analysis shows that whereas both translation tools attempt to maintain structural accuracy, Bing Translator tends to preserve rigid sentence structures, while DeepL adapts phrases to improve fluency, sometimes at the expense of grammatical accuracy. A readability assessment, based on the researcher’s interpretation, shows that DeepL produces smoother translations, which are more accessible to readers. This research contributes to the machine translation reliability discussion in journalism and emphasizes the challenge of maintaining formal equivalence while ensuring readability. Future research can explore a broader corpus or integrate computational linguistic analysis to improve translation evaluation methodology. Keywords:  Formal Equivalence; Machine Translation; News Translation; Readability;  News Headlines

Abstract

This research analyzes the exorcism dialog in the film The Pope's Exorcist (2023), especially the prayers uttered by the main character in the exorcism ritual. The purpose of this research is to describe the speech acts elements in the exorcism prayers using Austin's (1962) speech acts theory which includes locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary, so as to explain whether the utterances in the exorcism prayers are constative or performative according on their respective characteristics. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with pragmatics analysis approach. Data in the form of exorcism prayers excerpts were analyzed based on the three main elements of speech acts. The results show that locutionary act reflect the typical structure of general prayers and exorcism prayers in the Catholic Church's faith. Illocutionary act function as commands, requests, and declaratives that reflect the spiritual authority of the exorcist. While perlocutionary act have an impact on demon and the possessed individual. Overall, exorcism prayers tends to be performative in nature as it not only conveys meaning (constative), but also acts visibly in the context of religious rituals. This research contributes to the study of pragmatic linguistics in religious-horror films and provides insight into the use of language in the context of religious rituals, especially in the case of exorcism.
