Abstract

Skin cream, is one of the dosage forms, which contain little water content, and is widely used both as a medicinal and cosmetic cream. This study made an herbal cream formulation based on Agung Semeru banana skin of Lumajang variety which was known as an antimicrobial at a concentration of 100% which would then be tested for its ability as an antimicrobial against the growth of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. The method used in this study is using the paper disk Diffusion method with 6 repetitions, where data in the form of inhibitory zone diameters were analyzed using 1% One Way ANOVA test and continued with Duncan's test at 1%. The results of this study showed that there were significant differences between the treatment groups (α = 0,000), where the cream formulation of the Candida albicans fungi showed a larger inhibition zone diameter (22.50 ± 1.70 mm) than the inhibitory zone diameter in Staphylococcus aureus bacteria (21 , 50 ± 1.68 mm).

Abstract

Broccoli is a high value vegetable crop in Indonesia, however production is low due to limited number of suitable cultivars, so, breeding hybrid broccoli for warm climate is important. The first step in hybridization is providing homozygote parent plants which can be done efficiently via microspore culture. The objectives of this study were to determine 1) bud size that produce uninucleate microspore stage appropriate for culture; 2) pollen viability, 3) microspore development, in three broccoli cultivars (‘BL 10001’, ‘Royal Green’ and ‘Green Magic’). Various bud size (1 – 5 cm) was squashed and observed microscopically to determine bud size containing uninucleate microspore. Pollen viability was determined by IKI staining and pollen germination method. Chromosome number was counted on root tips using squash method with aceto-orcein stain. Various heat treatment schemes were conducted to induce microspreo development. Result showed uninucleate microspore derived from 2-3 mm and 3-4 mm bud length of ‘BL-10001’ and ‘Royal Green’ was responsive for microspore development in culture. Pollen viability varied among cultivars, 78-87% on IKI method and 15-16% on germination test. Microspore culture showed different embryogenesis response; pollen-like structure was produced by ‘BL 10001’.

Abstract

Hand sanitizers generally contain Ethyl Alcohol 62%, softener, moisturizer and anti-bacterial compounds such as tryclosan, glycerol, tannin, saponins and other antimicrobial agents. This study aimed to determine the effect of Agung Semeru banana peel extract as a natural hand sanitizer to inhibit fungal growth of Candida albicans. The antifungal activity test is carried out using the disk diffusion method. The use of this method is shown to measure the diameter of the area of resistance that occurs around paper discs that already contain antifungal in accordance with the concentration in each treatment. The results showed that Agung Semeru banana peel is effective as a natural Hand sanitizer that was indicated by differences in treatment. Utilization of Agung Semeru Banana peel Extract as a natural basic material hand sanitizer showed that no significant difference between treatments in inhibiting the growth of fungi Candida albicans, but a concentration of 7% (1,315 ± 0.0035c) showed better results compared to a concentration of 1% ( 1.2 ± 0.0a); concentration of 5% (1,208 ± 0,0023b) and 0% (1.2 ± 0,0a).

Abstract

Ammonia is one of the hazardous compounds, which is contained in the liquid waste of rubber factories. Ammonia waste can cause various kinds of pollution, one of which is water pollution. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the agung semeru banana peel extract as additional nutrition for indigenous bacteria in reducing ammonia levels. This research was conducted in the Biology laboratory, PGRI Argopuro University, Jember. This study uses a simple bioreactor as a tool to determine the decrease in ammonia levels in various treatments. The treatment in this study was using different concentrations of different banana peel extracts (0%, 5%, 10%). Based on the analysis of research data, it showed that Agung Semeru banana peel extract as an additional nutrient for indigenous bacteria was effective in reducing ammonia levels. At 10% banana peel extract concentration, the lowest ammonia level was in the range of 0.25-0.5 compared to the control concentration, namely 2. The higher the concentration of banana peel extract given, the lower the ammonia content in rubber waste.
