Abstract

Abstract

Research on the avifauna of Kangean Archipelago were conducted between 2007-2008. Objective of the studies were to obtain new data on the species numbers and community diversity at the main islands in various types of habitat. Three methods were applied i.e. opportunistic observation, point counts and mist netting. Each method would be complemen-tary in order to get a complete list of Kangean avifauna, while point counts were intended to be used for community di-versity study. A total of 82 species were recorded from which some of them especially migrating birds were new to the island. The richest diversity was found in natural habitat i.e. natural forest (28 species, Shannon index = 3.07), open area (32 species, Shannon index = 3.18) and mangrove (34 species, Shannon index = 3.09). Avian diversity was poor at teak plantation with only 26 species observed (Shannon index = 2.86). The threats to avian communities were apparent at song birds such as white-rumped shama and hill mynah. Those birds were hardly encountered during the survey. To be con-cluded, Kangean archipelago were richer in avifauna diversity than previously known, however hunting pressure and illegal logging might become serious threats to its existence.

Abstract

A numerical model of wave trajectory using shoaling and refraction formula was proposed in the coastal waters of Lhoknga, Aceh Besar, Indonesia. The developed model used a two dimensional (2D) numerical methods for wave trajectory with the input of wave height and period; 0.62 m and 8 second for high tide and 0.47 m and 6 second for low tide. This model was tested on site during low tide and high tide conditions for verification. The purpose of this numerical study is to trace the distribution of wave trajectory because of shoaling, wave breaking, and wave refraction. The model determines the wave height and crest pattern of the ray wave trajectory. The simulation result shows the pattern of the wave propagation at Lhoknga beach moves from the northwest to the east and south of the coast. The model also informs that the maximum wave height during high tide condition is 1.72 m and 1.31 m during low tide condition. The result indicates that the coast of Lhoknga has moderate wave conditions caused by a gentle beach bathymetry slope.

Abstract

The Kangean islands are a biologically poorly known archipelago situated in the Java Sea, Indonesia, approximately 120 km directly north of Bali. These islands host an avifauna comprising at least 13 endemic subspecies, two of which have by some sources recently been considered species. We combine historical published literature with our own surveys of the archipelago in 2007–2008, 2010 and 2023 to produce a complete list of the islands’ birds (n=140 species) and their distribution across the islands. We evaluate in more detail the conservation status of all endemic taxa, as well as several others we consider to be of concern. Despite its listing as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the endemic Kangean Tit-babbler Mixornis prillwitzi is highly tolerant of habitat degradation and is among the islands’ least threatened birds. However, because of trapping, the archipelago’s endemic taxon of Red-breasted Parakeet Psittacula alexandri kangeanensis, and its populations of Green Junglefowl Gallus varius and Common Hill Myna Gracula religiosa are likely at risk of extirpation. The endemic taxon of White-rumped Shama Copsychus malabaricus, sometimes afforded species rank as ‘Kangean Shama’ C. nigricauda, may already be (at least functionally) extinct in the main archipelago. We recommend longer and more detailed surveys of the islands’ birds, and that an effective protected area is established on main Kangean island, which hosts the largest area of remaining forest in the archipelago and most of its endemic taxa.

Abstract

Sulawesi is an important endemicity hotspot in Southeast Asia, with over 100 endemic species distributed on the island. Despite a long history of avian research on Sulawesi that has played a significant role in the development of evolutionary theory, many ornithological aspects remain unknown. The last few decades have seen novel discoveries, for example, in the form of new species range extensions and species discoveries in the face of ongoing habitat loss and conversion. We here report on a range extension and notes of morphological descriptions of the endemic Diabolical Nightjar and Indonesian Serin in Southeast Sulawesi, adding to our knowledge of the distribution of Sulawesi’s avifauna, especially in the southeastern part in which visits from ornithologists are less frequent. A review of recent museum collections adds another new locality for Diabolical Nightjar in South Sulawesi. Future taxonomic studies are needed to elucidate the status of both species, especially in the Indonesian Serin, as the subtle differences in the coloration of the forehead, rump, and upper tail covert may indicate more than one taxon exists in Sulawesi. In addition, we provide an annotated checklist of birds observed during the fieldwork encompassing areas around Kolaka and Makassar.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCibinong Science Center-Botanical Garden (CSC-BG) area as a bird habitat in urban areas has undergone significant land use change. This study aimed to identify bird species, analyze the use of vegetation as bird habitat, and analyze factors affecting bird species diversity in CSC-BG. This study used point count and survey methods with 31 observation points. Data processing was performed using PAST and EstimateS software. The total number of bird species encountered during the observation was 733 individuals of 33 species from 22 families. The most common bird species were sootyheaded bulbul 281 individuals, eurasian tree sparrow 154 individuals, and scaly-breasted munia 148 individuals. Shannon -Wiener index values in the CSC-BG area ranged from 1.03-1.98. The highest Shannon-Wiener index value was found in the building area (H' = 1.98) and the lowest in the garden area (H' = 1.03). The most utilized material by birds in CSC-BG was trees and grasses, while the most active activity performed by birds was perching. The results of regression analysis showed no correlation between the dependent variables (species diversity and bird abundance) and the independent variables (distance to pathway, asphalt road, dirt road, and water source, diameter of tree and pole, number of tree and pole, and proportion of tree and pole area).
