Abstract

The media has contributed significantly to the polemic regarding the age limit of prospective presidential candidates in Indonesia. To answer how the media contributes to this polemic, this study applies discourse network (DNA) analysis. By looking at three leading online media outlets in Indonesia, Viva.co.id, Tempo.co Dan Mediaindonesia.com in October 2023-January 2024, this study argues that the discrepancy around the age limit of presidential candidates not only affects the way the public views the issue but also exposes the public to the issue of transparency of the highest constitutional institution in Indonesia (MK). Moreover, by applying the Discourse Coalition Framework (DCF), this study found that Mediaindonesia.com and Tempo.co have the same views regarding the issue of age restrictions, which are harmful to the Constitutional Court’s policies. Meanwhile, Viva is relatively supportive and agrees with the policy. Media organizations use influential individuals to build discourse as part of the narrative. They use these people as their source to support certain discourses. These people range from academics, activists, and political parties to speaking experts to experts.

Abstract

The development of communication technology has often not aligned with efforts to foster children’s interest in history. History, which often focuses on narratives of past suffering or becomes entangled in debates over truth, tends to be perceived as uninspiring and unappealing. As a result, history is increasingly overlooked, particularly by children, amid the dominance of pop culture. Through a visual communication approach, this community service program developed child-friendly historical narratives and actively involved children as participants. The story of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes, rooted in the history of the Singosari Kingdom in Malang, was chosen as the learning material due to its significance as an important part of local history. The program engaged students of TK Dharma Putra Malang as the participants. This program uses audio-visual design products, storytelling activities based on story books, using activity books as tools of historical learning for kindergarten students, while the students are accompanied by the facilitators who consist of the members of the Community Service team and also the teachers of the school. This approach not only aimed to introduce history to children but also sought to cultivate their interest and pride in the legacy of local culture. The community service initiative demonstrates that introducing history through creative media can enhance children’s enthusiasm and participation in learning history. This program is intended to inspire enjoyable and effective ways of teaching history in the digital age.

Abstract

This study is rooted in the uniqueness of the pesantren tradition that combines local religious and cultural values in communication practices, which often differ from the concept of Western rhetoric oriented towards ethos, pathos, and logos. In the Ngalah Islamic Boarding School, rhetoric not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a means to build and strengthen spiritual and emotional relationships between the kiai and the students, without ignoring the values of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah tradition. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with an ethnographic method, involving observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with the kiai and students to understand the dynamics of their communication and relationships. Data are processed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings show that Kiai Sholeh Bahruddin applies an emotional approach through the practice of nyuwuk, which strengthens the bond between the kiai and the students, creating a relationship that goes beyond just teacher and student, to resemble the relationship between father and son. This study also revealed that the rhetoric in this Islamic boarding school functions as a means to build deep spiritual relationships and integrate religious values with general education, as well as making a significant contribution to the formation of character and social integration of students.

Abstract

This study examines the distinctive communication practices associated with women’s empowerment from an Eastern Perspective, focusing on the Mamak Peduli community in Lamongan, East Java, Indonesia. Unlike Western notions of empowerment, Mamak Peduli community construct and reach consensus on the concept of empowered women with socio-religious characters through communication practice. Employing a qualitative method and procedural ethnography, the study involves direct engagement with the community. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, followed by data analysis using an interactive field model based on symbolic interactionism theory. Findings reveal that the community organizes empowerment through structured, agreed-upon group activities, particularly those involving input group communication. The shared understanding of empowerment is represented through the alignment of individual actions with broader social and religious capacities. These activities foster both personal growth and community benefit. Empowerment in Mamak Peduli is symbolized through routine socio-religious practices that are both internal (self-development) and external (community benefit) in nature. These practices collectively symbolize the empowered woman within the local cultural context. The Mamak Peduli community exemplifies how grassroots communication and socio-religious collaboration can construct a unique, culturally embedded model of women’s empowerment that fosters both individual capability and communal well-being. This study presents a culturally grounded framework for women’s empowerment communication that contributes to advancing SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by demonstrating how faith-based and communal practices can foster inclusive participation and relational equity in socio-religious contexts.

Abstract

Adolescent substance abuse remains a persistent global public health concern, shaped by developmental vulnerability, social influences, and increasing exposure to media-based messages, highlighting the need for effective and contextually relevant prevention strategies. Although visual communication has become a prominent component of prevention campaigns, evidence regarding its effectiveness and the role of youth participation, particularly through Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR), has not been systematically consolidated. This systematic literature review examines how visual communication is implemented in adolescent substance abuse prevention, evaluates its effectiveness in influencing knowledge, attitudes, social norms, and behaviours, and explores the contribution of YPAR to campaign design and impact. Following PRISMA and Kitchenham guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Scopus and Google Scholar using PICO-informed keywords. Peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 in English or Bahasa Indonesia were screened using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological quality was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT), and data were synthesized through thematic analysis supported by NVivo 14. A total of 36 studies were included. The findings indicate that static visuals, audio-visual content, and social media–based strategies dominate the literature and are consistently associated with improvements in knowledge, risk perception, attitudes, and social norms. Behavioural outcomes were less frequently examined. Participatory and YPAR-driven visual approaches, although limited in number, demonstrated strong potential in fostering youth agency, engagement, and empowerment. These findings underscore the importance of integrating participatory visual communication strategies to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of adolescent substance abuse prevention efforts.
