Abstract

The symbiotic relationship between Islam and media is inevitable. The frequent of media coverage about Islam has been researched by many especially since the remarkable incident of September 11 in 2001. From that moment, Islam has been viewed and labelled as negative by the Western media specifically to the Muslims living in America and those in the Middle East countries. This phenomenon has been contagious to the Muslims in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia as these two countries are believed to have a connection with recent terrorist groups such as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Therefore, this study was conducted to see the frequent coverage specifically on terrorism issues as reported by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and to explore the news themes that emerged in the news reporting. To realize this study, the researchers applied both quantitative and qualitative analysis to analyse the online news articles found in WSJ from year 2012 until 2013. The qualitative software was used in this study namely QSR Nvivo 11 to help and assist the researchers to store, manage and codify the news and also the quantitative software which is SPSS to calculate the frequencies of the reporting. The findings revealed that WSJ reported news related to terrorism in Malaysia and Indonesia frequently but it seems that Indonesia received higher percentage compared to Malaysia. In terms of news themes, the results found four major themes that are very much related to terrorism issues such as terrorist attacks, suspected as terrorist and robbery from both issues happened in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Abstract

Domestic violence cases are increasingly being exposed in various news outlets,  reporting women are disproportionately affected by both physical and sexual violence. The extensive coverage of these incidents represents a significant advancement in empowering women's positions. Nevertheless, given the enduring influence of patriarchal society within the media business, it is necessary to do a more in-depth analysis of how women are depicted while reporting domestic violence, especially from visual representations. The author investigated the news reporting of domestic violence from Kompas.com and Detik.com during 2022-2023. The analysis revealed that there is ambiguity in representing women as the victims of domestic violence. The two outlets' progressive approach is evident in the narrative, as they position the women as the subjects. However, from the visual images, both outlets continue to perpetuate the notion of women as victims by portraying them in a prejudiced manner.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital learning environments has intensified concerns regarding the erosion of ethical values, superficial engagement, and limited inclusivity in multicultural educational contexts. While contemporary educational policies emphasize digital competencies and future-ready skills, there remains a critical lack of integrative frameworks that align technological advancement with ethical and philosophical foundations. This study aims to develop a conceptual framework that integrates the Islamic educational philosophy of Ta’dib with interactive new media, in alignment with the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2026–2035, to foster ethical and inclusive learning. Employing a systematic integrative review design, this study synthesizes insights from three key domains: Islamic educational philosophy, digital pedagogy, and national education policy. Data were collected from scholarly literature and policy documents, and analyzed through thematic and comparative synthesis to identify conceptual convergences, gaps, and opportunities for integration. The findings propose a three-pillar conceptual framework that positions Ta’dib as the epistemological anchor, interactive new media as the pedagogical vehicle, and policy directives as the strategic context. The framework operationalizes ethical and holistic education through the Soft–Sharp–Smart competency structure and a recursive pedagogical cycle emphasizing intentionality, practice, reflection, and social impact. It demonstrates that digital technologies, when guided by ethical principles, can function as transformative environments for cultivating moral reasoning, intercultural competence, and responsible digital citizenship. The study contributes theoretically by bridging fragmented domains of philosophy, technology, and policy, and offers practical implications for educators and policymakers seeking to implement ethically grounded and inclusive digital education in multicultural societies.

Abstract

The study conceptualises comment sections on social media platforms such as TikTok, Threads or Instagram and others as arenas where emotional expression intersects with civic reasoning and rights-based claims. Using a qualitative comparative content analysis, selected cases from Malaysian and Indonesian media accounts employing clickbait and rage-inducing narratives are examined.  The analysis focuses on discursive patterns in user responses, including moral positioning, blame attribution, calls for accountability, rights assertions, exclusionary rhetoric, and polarised affective reactions. By comparing how digital publics engage with news stories involving rights related issues such as freedom of expression, religious sensitivities, and minority protections, the study explores whether emotionally charged raming fosters meaningful civic deliberation or intensifies antagonistic discourse. Through this comparative lens, the paper contributes to emerging scholarship on digital culture, civic engagement, and the evolving contestation of human rights in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Korean food dramas have become an increasingly visible medium through which Korean culinary culture and identity are represented in the global Korean Wave, yet comparative studies examining such representations across different temporal settings remain limited. This study examines how Korean culinary identity is constructed and represented in two food dramas with contrasting historical contexts, namely Tastefully Yours, set in contemporary Jeonju, and Bon Appétit, Your Majesty! set during the Joseon dynastic era. Employing a qualitative content analysis approach within a comparative research design, the study analyzes all episodes of both dramas using Hamond's six dimensions of culinary culture as the primary analytical framework, supplemented by concepts of gastrodiplomacy and cultural representation. Data were collected through systematic observation and library research, with analysis conducted following the Miles and Huberman model and supported by comparison with relevant literature. The findings indicate that Korean culinary identity is represented through recurring cultural values across both temporal contexts, including the principles of sikyangdokwon and jeong, while also varying in presentation, etiquette, and social function according to historical and social settings. The findings further show that the dramas represent culinary heritage through narrative, visual, and social practices associated with food. These findings contribute to the study of Korean culinary representation in media and provide a basis for examining the relationship between food media, cultural identity, and broader discussions of gastrodiplomacy and cultural communication.
