Abstract

Environmental factors play an important role in the growth and survival of fish, both directly and indirectly. This role is not limited to determining the success of fish growth in terms of length and weight; fish behavior, feeding patterns, and metabolism are also affected. Photoperiod itself is defined as the length of time of light and dark exposure. This study aims to evaluate the effect of photoperiodism on the growth rate and physiological response of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The study was conducted in Gandus District, Palembang City. Data and analysis were performed using a completely randomized design (CRD) with several parameters such as growth rate, weight gain, survival rate, and behavior of red tilapia observed qualitatively in response to treatment with varying light exposure times. The treatments given were 3 variations of light and dark exposure and 5 repetitions with variations P1: 20 hours of light: 4 hours of dark (20T; 4G) P2: 16 hours of light: 8 hours of dark (16T; 8G), and P3: 12 hours light : 12 hours dark (12T; 12G). The analysis results showed that red tilapia had a positive growth response, characterized by an increase in fish length and weight, caused by increased metabolism due to an increase in feed consumption rate. Fish behavior changed compared to the control group due to physiological stress caused by prolonged exposure to light.

Abstract

Research on the diversity of fish fauna has been widely carried out, especially in Indonesia, even in some areas has decreased, especially in rivers due to many factors. The Ogan River that flows through Ogan Ilir Regency is a multipurpose river for the community, not only for daily needs, transportation, aquaculture activities, and capture fisheries. Currently, information on fish fauna in the Ogan River in Ogan Ilir Regency has not been verified and has not been published in detail. The study aims to determine the types of fish caught, diversity index, uniformity index, abundance index, and dominance index. The research was conducted in the Ogan River, South Pemulutan Subdistrict, Ogan Ilir Regency with a survey method that determines the station point by purposive sampling and produces three stations with different characteristics. Sampling of fish was done 8 times for three months using a gill net. The results showed that in the Ogan River 24 species of fish were found with a total catch of 276 fish classified into 14 families, namely dukang fish, dukang yellow fish, long whiskers catfish, asian redtail catfish, marble goby, milkfish, duskyfin glassy perchlet, striped snakehead, nile tilapia, long tongue sole, silver barb, tinfoil barb, beardless barb, black sharkminnow, bonylip barb, umbut fish, sleepy goby, kissing gourami, amazon sailfin catfish, giant prawn, giant gourami, pangasius juaro, malayan leaffish, and lais fish. All stations show a moderate diversity index value of 1.72-2.842, the uniformity index value shows evenly distributed at all stations, namely 0.898 - 1.816, the abundance index value is 1 which indicates less abundant at all stations and the dominance index shows a low value that ranges from 0.068-0.094 or no dominating species.

Abstract

This community service initiative, conducted under the Community-Based Empowerment Scheme, aims to enhance the economic independence of the Burai Village Youth Organization (Karang Taruna) through the implementation of biofloc technology in catfish cultivation and the utilization of maggots (Black Soldier Fly larvae) as an alternative feed source. The program was carried out from March to November 2025, comprising several stages: initial exploration, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), outreach, technical training, and field practice. The training focused on three key aspects: (1) biofloc-based catfish farming, (2) maggot cultivation as a high-protein feed, and (3) basic marketing and bookkeeping strategies. The outcomes showed a significant improvement in the capacity of village youth to manage productive, fisheries-based enterprises. However, challenges remained, including fish mortality rates of up to 30% due to unstable water quality and maggot mortality caused by high environmental temperatures. Corrective measures were implemented through regular water quality monitoring, improved feed management, and better control of maggot rearing conditions. Overall, this program successfully strengthened the technical and managerial skills of Karang Taruna members, fostered an entrepreneurial mindset, and opened up sustainable business opportunities utilizing local resources.

Abstract

Pangasius catfish (Pangasius sp.) was an important commodity in Indonesia. High demand in the market requires production to be carried out actively. Adding spirulina as a supplement to feed was a way to increase the growth of pangasius catfish seeds for optimal production. The aimed of the research was to determine the effect of spirulina on the growth of pangasius catfish seeds which were added to pelleted feed. The research used a completely randomized design with four levels of treatment. Treatment 1 (100g commercial pellets + 3g spirulina), treatment 2 (100g commercial pellets + 5g spirulina), treatment 3 (100g commercial pellets + 7 g spirulina), treatment 4 (100g commercial pellets + 9g spirulina). The parameters observed were growth of length, weight, survival, and water quality (pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen). The study results showed that the addition of 7 g spirulina had the best effect on growth with a length of 5.25 cm and a weight of 6.74 g. Meanwhile, the lowest occurred when adding 9 g of spirulina with a length of 4.08 cm and a weight of 5.78 g. There was no mortality during maintenance so that the survival rate of pangasius catfish seeds was 100% in each treatment. So the addition of spirulina to feed has an effect on the growth of pangasius catfish. However, if ftoo much spirulina was added, the effect will not be optimal.

Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the abundance, diversity, uniformity, and dominance of plankton in fish stomachs and waters that are expected to provide information about water productivity. The research was carried out in a tributary of the Ogan River, Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra at three stations, namely Indralaya Mulya Village, Tanjung Seteko Village and Muara Penimbung Village. The method used field surveys and location determination using purposive sampling with fish stomach contents, water samples for plankton observations, and water quality parameters. Fish sampling was carried out six times in 3 months, and water samples for plankton observations were one time per month, from April to June 2018. Plankton is found in fish stomachs and waters with a total abundance of 35.6 - 448.12 ind/l plankton consisting of 8 divisions with 11 classes. The plankton diversity index has moderate diversity and moderate community stability with a value between 1.11 - 1.45. The uniformity index of plankton in the fish stomach showed small uniformity of plankton (0.41-0.67), while in the waters, at station three and station 1 in April, the uniformity was high (E values 0.72 and E 0.93). The value of the plankton dominance index is in the range of 0.27-0.37. No species dominate other species or D = 0 (0.5), with moderately polluted water quality

Abstract

Floodplain swamp are seasonally inundated aquatic ecosystems that play vital ecological roles as habitats, spawning grounds, and natural buffers supporting local fish diversity in Indonesia, particularly in South Sumatra. However, pressures from land conversion, environmental degradation, and overexploitation have caused a decline in biodiversity and now threaten the long-term sustainability of these ecosystems. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, guided by the PRISMA protocol, to explore the role of socio-ecological approaches in managing floodplain swamp for fish conservation. The analysis was conducted through thematic and bibliometric synthesis using VOSviewer software to identify research trends, thematic clusters, and existing knowledge gaps. The findings reveal that the success of fish conservation in floodplain swamp depends not only on ecological factors but also on social, cultural, economic, and institutional dimensions. Integrating local wisdom such as the Lubuk Larangan system and traditional fisheries regulations with modern scientific frameworks like Adaptive Collaborative Management enhances socio ecological resilience and conservation effectiveness. An adaptive and participatory socio ecological management model for floodplain swamp is therefore essential to ensure the sustainability of fish resources and the well-being of local communities. Abstract

Information on fish species composition is essential for evaluating the ecological condition of river ecosystems and providing a scientific basis for sustainable fisheries management. However, data on fish diversity in the Komering River, particularly in Sukadarma Village, Jejawi District, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to inventory fish species caught in the Komering River and assess their diversity, evenness, and dominance. The research was conducted from February to May 2024 at five observation stations using a purposive sampling approach. Fish sampling was carried out four times per month for three consecutive months. Data were analyzed using the Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H'), evenness index (E), and Simpson's dominance index (C). A total of 635 individual fish representing 21 species were recorded during the study. The diversity index ranged from 1.03 to 3.42, indicating moderate diversity at Stations 1–4 (H' = 1.03–2.78) and high diversity at Station 5 (H' = 3.42). Evenness values ranged from 0.51 to 0.98, indicating that fish individuals were generally distributed evenly among species. Dominance index values ranged from 0.18 to 0.62, with only Station 3 showing species dominance (C = 0.62), while the remaining stations exhibited no dominant species. These findings indicate that the Komering River in Sukadarma Village still supports relatively stable freshwater fish communities with moderate to high biodiversity, providing important baseline information for fisheries resource management and biodiversity conservation.
