Abstract

Tembang(poetry) is one of the important things in the socio-religious life of the Balinese people. They have four types of traditional tembang; they are sekar rare (gegendingan), sekar alit (macapat), sekarmadia (kidung), and sekaragung (kakawin). Tembang is intensively used in the socio-religious life of the Balinese people. It cannot be separated from the religious life of the Bali Hindus. In almost every ritual, especially the large-scale rituals such as the temple festival, the cremation ceremony ‘ngaben’, and tooth filing ceremony and so forth tembang is recited. It can be regarded as a sign that a ritual is being performed by the Hindus in Bali. Keywords: tembang, socio-religious, ritual, Hindus

Abstract

The story in which the curse of Astabasu and the birth of Bhisma are narrated is one of the stories in Adiparwa. It is narrated that BagawanWasistha condemned Astabasu (eight basus) for stealing Nandini, his cow. Prabhata, one of the Astabasus, stole the cow for Dyoh, his wife whom he loved so much and who wanted to consume the milk produced by the cow. Astabasu and Goddess Gangga were condemned for the mistake they had made. Goddess Gangga did not mind reducing the curse of Astabasu for which they were supposed to return to where they had come from, the heaven. When the first seven basus were born, they were returned to where they had come from by Goddess Gangga by throwing them away. Bhisma, the reincarnation of the eighth basu was more heavily and longer punished as he had been primarily responsible for the theft. During his life, Bhisma entirely served the Kuru family and strongly promised that he would never be married ‘brahmacari’ to make his parents happy.

Abstract

Religious social construction in the life of society in Bali gives advantages for men but vice versa for women in all aspects of life. Social construction strengthens myths, creates discrimination, marginalization, and oppression of women. Religious interpretations are conducted in constructions created by patriarchal societies, so women are always positioned as subordinate status. This cultural and patriarchal ideology clarifies women as the second class after men, as oppressed objects in all living structures. The image of women behind this cultural manifestation has become a heritage that accepted by balinese people until recently although feminism's insistence has been done entirely to strive for the emancipation and equality in all aspects of life.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the importance of revitalizing the local wisdom of Bali for the strengthening the Bali cultural identity in order to sustain Balinese culture and national values that characterize the culture of Bali. Bali as a major tourist destination has experienced a variety of physical and non-physical problems. Therefore, the revitalization of the values of local wisdom especially in short stories that use Balinese language becomes important to be redeveloped in order to strengthen the personal and culture of Bali. The literary work is an impersonation (utnaturapoeisis), imitation or imitationaturae. In relation to the cultural values, local wisdom is a fastener segment of the various forms of culture that already existed since a long time ago, the functions as a filter, anticipatory, transformative against elements of foreign cultures. Methodologically, the data was collected by direct observation, classification, and translation that assisted with note taking and reading techniques. The collected data was analytically interpretive and descriptive analyzed. The results were presented by an informal method with deductive-inductive techniques. Based on the classification, there were four short stories analyzed. The results showed that the Balinese stories were dominated by the topic of education, the importance of self-control on drugs; hedonic behavior is a bad portrait for teenagers.
