Abstract

Nyepi is a sacred and a holy day for Hindus in Bali, Indonesia. It only happens once a year. At Nyepi time, for one day, all day activities in Bali are stopped, and the Hindus shall carry Catur Bratha PeNyepian, which consist of: Amati Karya (not working), Amati Geni (not light a fire), Amati Lelungan (not traveling) and Amati Lelanguan (not having fun/entertainment). Along with the rapid development of tourism in Bali, a Nyepi ritual is also inseparable from the shadow of tourism commercialization. In the last decade, more and more businesses are offering Nyepi holiday packages to tourists. Surely this is contrary to the real essence of Nyepi. The purpose of this research is to reveal what tourism through the commercialization of Nyepi holiday packages which has been done through the commodification of Nyepi as compared to its real meaning and how does Nyepi become a new hegemony in the sphere of social multiculturalism. This research approach is qualitative description, and the theorical used, among others: the commodification theory, the theory of hegemony and the theory of consumerism. The result show that the influence of commercialization and commodification of Balinese culture is an outcome of the advancement of tourism. Nyepi commodification occurs in the process of modernization, which is rooted in capitalism and the increasing of heterogeneity in Bali. This phenomenon appears as an attempt by revolts against prevailing hegemony of Nyepi in Bali.

Abstract

The expatriates in Ubud have played an important role in the development of Balinese tourism since the early 20th century and their influence continues today. This study aims to examine the development, dynamics and interactions of capitals between expatriates, society and local elites by adapting the Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) model, combined with Bourdieu’s capital theory and Homan’s social exchange theory as an analytical tool. This qualitative research uses critical phenomenological analysis based on action research, with data collection methods in the form of participatory observation, in-depth interviews and documentation studies, with research locus in Ubud and its surroundings. This research is intended to assist stakeholders, practitioners and tourism academics in uncovering the development and interaction of expatriate capital that occurs in the realm of Ubud based on the life cycle of tourism destinations. This research reveals that by adapting the TALC model, currently the development of Ubud tourism is at a consolidation stage, and the interaction of capitals (economic capital, cultural capital, symbolic capital and social capital) is becoming tighter and more complex. In all these processes, the symbiosis of mutualism is more dominant, although in some cases there are still practices of marginalization and hegemony which are measured based on ownership of capital. Abstract

Abstract

As an international tourist destination, Bali has always been a main target of modern capitalists, both domestic and international. Massive construction of tourism facilities occurred in Bali, which directly affects and threatens the environment and changing social patterns of local communities. It is an irony, because Bali’s tourism relies on environment sustainability, natural landscapes and it’s unique cultural richness. Tumpek Wariga is one of the Balinese’s local genius, particularly in the context of maintaining harmony with all creatures, nature and environment, in form of cultural activitiesor Hindu rituals. These activities are summarized in Bali sublime philosophy which is recognized by UNESCO, namely the Tri Hita Karana. In various region of Bali, Tumpek Wariga is also called Tumpek Pengarah, Tumpek Uduh and Tumpek Bubuh. In this ceremony, the offerings are dedicated to the presence of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi (The Almighty God) in His manifestation as Lord Sangkara (Lord Shiva), the ruler of vegetation and environment in Balinese tradition. The purpose of this study was to assess the ultimate meaning and the implementation of Tumpek Wariga as a Balinese local genius in supporting ecological-based sustainable tourism in Bali. This case study took place in Plaga Village, which is one of the tourist villages developed by the government of Badung regency. This research uses qualitative approach, with data collection methods such as observation, in-depth interview and literature study. Hopefully, this research can be beneficial to all stakeholders and academics of tourism, especially in studies of Balinese local genius, as well as a new reference for the development of ecological based sustainable tourism in Bali.
