Abstract

This research is descriptive qualitative research with the object of research manga entitled "Shishi mo Kobamazu" (2014) by Kiriyu Kiyoi. This manga is a boy's same-sex love genre that generally has a formula for the roles of Seme and Uke. The role of seme will be considered to have all the masculine traits and the role of uke to have all the feminine traits. In the Shishi mo Kobamazu manga, the roles of Seme and Uke are given a different role concept from manga boy's love in general resulting in a deconstruction of the role concepts of Seme and Uke. The aim of this research is to describe the deconstruction that occurs and its depiction in literary works so that it can be seen that the construction of gender roles in same-sex love relationships does not have a patent provision and can change according to conditions and times. The method used is a literature study. The theory used in this research is Derrida's deconstruction theory and Butler's performativity. Both theories are used to analyze the form of deconstruction in the roles of seme and uke and to understand the concept of gender roles in same-sex relationships. The results show that the character in this manga can display and form a new identity in their seme and uke roles through the performativity of gender roles in same-sex relationships. The new identity in the form of Seme and Uke is not fixed on one gender trait. Seme can be described as having a petite body and characters like women and uke can be described as having a strong and masculine physique. The roles of Seme and Uke can change according to the identity shown by each character in the manga.

Abstract

The symbols on junior high school uniforms in Japan have different meanings. The purpose of this study is to describe the meaning of semiotics (denotative, connotative, and myth) in junior high school uniforms in Japan using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This research is a qualitative descriptive study research with literature study data collection techniques. In addition, school coats are required to be in a dark color, which is a tradition in Japan where students are prohibited from wearing brightly colored coats. They wear a suit collar with a standard collar shape which is the best collar to use in any occasion, the symbol in the middle of the coat buttons means an identifier of the origin of the uniform, the coat pocket is decorative and is used to place an item. Then the purpose of using ties is for the student to be more confident and learn to dress neatly, white school shirts like school shirts in general symbolize cleanliness and innocence which makes students look formal when attending school, and school skirts that cover part or all of their legs part to show the feminist side of female students.

Abstract

Abstract. Masculinity is a construction formed by society because of the expectations of men in society, so various forms of masculinity emerge. The Yakuza group is a group that is very synonymous with masculinity and is even referred to as the world of men. However, in reality, their masculine form shackles them in social interaction. The purpose of this study is to describe the forms of Yakuza masculinity so that there will be visible differences in the forms of masculinity between Yakuza and society in general. Yakuza masculinity has a general concept of masculinity, or is called hegemonic masculinity. However, forms of masculinity that are too extreme make their masculinity marginal. That happens because of differences in the interpretation of masculinity by society toward certain groups. The data is from images and dialogues representing Yakuza forms of masculinity in Gokusen manga. Data collection used a literature review technique, and data analysis used a qualitative descriptive technique.  The findings suggest that masculinity owned by the Yakuza group represents a form of hegemonic masculinity, but the form of masculinity becomes a problem for its existence. The form of masculinity has a dual identity as a tool of legitimacy and a means of subordination to individuals and groupsKeywords: Hegemonic, Marginal Masculinity, Masculinity, Yakuza Masculinity, Yakuza

Abstract

This research begins with several problems found around women, one of which is about gender equality. Because of these conditions, the research was conducted with the aim of knowing how women struggle in achieving their existence. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This research data uses dialogues and pictures taken from the manga Arte as data sources. The data retrieval method used is a reading and note-taking technique. Data analysis techniques are presented descriptively. This study uses Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminism theory. The results of the study show that women because of their otherness often get injustice in gender relations. In order for women to gain their own existence, women must fight back by carrying out four strategies of self-transcendence according to Beauvoir, namely working, becoming an intellectual figure, working to achieve social transformation, and rejecting the other. Through research from Arte's manga, it can be concluded that a woman who wants to achieve her existence is not an easy thing to achieve. Women who want to get out of the shackles of patriarchy do not always get a positive response, and it takes more effort and hard work to achieve that existence.
