Abstract

Medical students are constantly getting stress that could lead to oxidative stress where the level of free radicals is higher than the level of antioxidants in the body. Free radicals can bind to erythrocyte membranes and alter membrane structure that lead to the integrity of the erythrocyte membrane resulting in decreased erythrocyte ability in preventing hemolysis. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that could prevent free radicals bond to erythrocyte membrane. Vitamin C works by donating electrons to free radicals and prevent binding to erythrocyte membranes. The purposed of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin C consumption on osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in medical students with psychological stress. This research was clinical trial research with quasi experimental with pretest-posttest control group design. Researchers used Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire to measure the stress level. Data analysis using T test obtained mean of percentage of hemolysis between pretest and posttest was p= 0,02. It can be concluded that there is significant difference on osmotic fragility due to Vitamin C consumption in medical Student of Jember University with psychological stress.

Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by high cholesterol concentration in blood. This is a risk factor for many diseases. Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an incretin hormone that affects cholesterol and other diseases with hypercholesterolemia as a risk factor. Drug that widely used for hypercholesterolemia is simvastatin which can increase GLP-1. GLP-1 also can be increased by high fibrous foods consumption, one of which is galactomannan which can be found in coconut as much as 61%. This study aimed to determine the effect of galactomannan on GLP-1 and compared with simvastatin. Wistar rats were induced into hypercholesterolemia and than treated with galactomannan 70 mg/200gBW/day and 140 mg/200gBW/day and simvastatin 0,1 mg/200gBW/day. After 28 days, GLP-1 levels was measured. The result showed that GLP-1 in 140 mg/200gBW/day group was the highest and in 70 mg/200gBW/day group was the lowest. Data analysis revealed no significant difference between 140 mg/200gBW/day and simvastatin group. In conclusion, galactomannan 140 mg/200gBW/day had the same potency as simvastatin 0,1 mg/200gBW/day.   Keywords: Hypercholesterolemia, GLP-1, Galactomannan, Simvastatin

Abstract

Mango is a plant contains many active compounds with health benefits. Total phenolic content of mango peel is higher than mango flesh, with its major component are mangiferin and quercetin. Quercetin has anti-inflammatory effects through the inhibition of inflammatory mediators are serotonin, bradykinin, histamine and prostaglandin, possibly could reduce oedema as a sign of inflammation. This study used carrageenin to induce inflammation by making paw oedema in mice. The aim of this research was to know the effect of arumanis mango peel extract to reduce paw oedema in white male mice. The was quasi experimental study with 7 study groups. Spearman analyses showed a correlation with significance of (p= 0.003) that mean it has a significant correlation (p <0.01) at the 330th min. Spearman correlation coefficients was 0,632, indicated that the dose of extract and paw oedema have strong correlation. It can be concluded that mango peel extract has effect for reducing paw oedema in white male mice, with the smallest dose was 1,002mg / gBW. Keywords: mango, quercetin, paw oedema

Abstract

Isoniazid (INH) is metabolized become hidrazine that depleted glutation (GSH) in hepatocytes, resulted imbalance oxidant and antioxidant along with increased of free radicals, which can increase alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Ethanolic extract of red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.) leaves contains antioxidant which can donates the electron so free radical can be stabilized. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanolic extract of red spinach leaves on ALP levels of mice induced by INH and its effective dose. This research used 28 mices that divided into seven groups: K(N) was given normal saline, K(-) was given INH 100 mg/kgBW, K1, K2, K3, K4 and K5 group which given INH 100 mg/kgBW peroral and after 2 hours would be given ethanolic extract of red spinach leaves in the dose 1,05 mg/20gBW, 2,1 mg/20gBW, 4,2 mg/20gBW, 8,4 mg/20gBW and 16,8 mg/20gBW for ten days. ALP serum was measured on the day 11th.The result of average ALP levels were K(N) 41,36 U/L, K(-) 110,97 U/L, K1 79,26 U/L, K2 71,34 U/L, K3 66,51 U/L, K4 62,82 U/L and K5 47,21 U/L. In conclusion the ethanolic extract of red spinach leaves could prevent the increasing of ALP levels and the effective dose of the extract was 6,75 mg/20gBW. Keywords: red spinach leaves, ALP, INH
