Abstract

Abstract

Fracture is a musculoskeletal injury with a high incidence rate. The healing process of fracture is disturbed by the oxidative stress, because of imbalance quantity of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and antioxidant capacity in the body that neutralizes it. Antioxidants in red spinach have the potential to suppress the level of oxidative stress. The study aimed to determinate the effect of red spinach ethanolic extract on decreasing oxidative stress by measuring malonaldialdehyde (MDA) concentration in fracture healing process. The study used thirty rats and divided into five groups; negative control group, positive control group, and three treatment groups of red spinach ethanolic extract in a dose of 35,4 mg/150gBB, 70,8 mg/150gBB, and 141,6 mg/150gBB manually fractured on right femur under anaesthesia and immobilized by leucodur plaster. Each group was treated orally respectively one week. The result of One Way Anova showed a significance of 0,000 (p<0,05) in which there was a significant difference in serum MDA levels between the treatment groups and the control groups. The result of LSD test between P1 group and P3 group showed significantly different in which decreased serum MDA levels were consistent with increasing doses of red spinach ethanolic extract. The study concluded that red spinach ethanolic extract had a positive effect on supression of oxidative stress in fracture healing process. Abstract

Physalia utriculus is one of the invertebrate marine biota that is often found in Indonesia. Some symptoms of venoming due to jellyfish stings cause pain, itching, and hemolysis. In Indonesia, 13 cases of jellyfish stings were reported in 2005-2009 with three people dying in Java, Bali, and Bangka. Cocoa beans (Theobroma cacao L.) contain fat, carbohydrates, proteins, and polyphenol compounds that are useful as antioxidants. Polyphenols in the form of epicathechins, catechins, and procyanidins serve to provide protection to hemolysis. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of ethanol extract of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) in inhibiting the damage of erythrocyte induced by Physalia utriculus in vitro. This study used 28 samples of erythrocytes divided into seven groups, namely the normal control group, negative controls, and treatment with cocoa ethanol extract 0.2%, 0.1%, 0.04%, and 0.02%. Each subsequent group induced venom Physalia utriculus. The results showed that the average speed of erythrocyte lysis in the treatment group by giving cocoa ethanol extract 0.2%, 0.1%, 0.04%, and 0.02% respectively (seconds ± standard deviation) was 858,25 ± 94,44; 1.000,5 ± 159,93; 678,5 ± 19,71; and 1.006 ± 159,50. The mean speed of erythrocyte lysis in the negative control group was 1,025 ± 164.63 and the positive control group with the administration of N-Acetylcystein can last up to one hour after administration of venoms. Test for normality and homogeneity shows that data is normally distributed and homogeneous. One Way Annova analysis shows the significance value of p <0.05, then a post hoc analysis test was performed with the Bonferoni method to find out the differences in significance in each group. In this study it can be concluded that the administration of cocoa ethanol extract has no potential to inhibit erythrocyte damage that has been venomed by Physalia utriculus in vitro. Keywords: Physalia utriculus, cacao, erythrocyte damage

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is a serious health problem that have ben uneffective therapy. The cause of antibiotic resistance 80% comes from food of animal origin such as Broiler Chicken. E. coli contamination in antibiotic resistant chicken has been shown to transfer genetic factors between bacteria in the human intestinal system. Almost all broiler breeders use commercial feed containing tetracycline antibiotics. The use of antibiotics in the feed mixture is one of the risk factors for resistance. The aim of this study was to get an information of antibiotic resistance E. coli which isolated from broiler meat. Identification test of E. coli used two phase, presumtive test and confirmed test. Sensitivity test for E. coli to antibiotic by disc diffusion Kirby Bauer method. This study used 6 sample of upper thigh broiler meat, the antibiotic use tetracycline. The data were analyzed descriptively. The results of this study show that from 6 isolate sample, there are 4 isolate identificated as E. coli and 2 isolate show resistance to the tetracycline antibiotic. The conclusion of this study showed resistance has occurred on 50% sample.

Abstract

Abdominal obesity is a global public health problem. The high prevalence of abdominal obesity triggers an increase in morbidity and mortality in chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular, and cancer. One of the causes of the high prevalence of abdominal obesity is the lack of physical activity. Prevention efforts are needed through the identification of risk factors such as measurement of waist hip ratios. The respondents of this study were divided into two groups: 28 respondents who did zumba exercise for four weeks and 28 control respondents. The statistical test performed was a paired t-test comparison test. The results of this study indicate the value of t-count > t-table value (7.184 > 2.052) and the significance of 0.000 < 0.05. These results indicate that there is a decrease in the waist hip ratio after doing zumba exercise for four weeks.

Abstract

Medical students may to receive excessive psychological stressors during their education. The response of stress experienced by the body can activate the sympathetic neuron pathways and complex system hypothalamic pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This can lead to a state of oxidative stress in the body through an increase of metabolism, mitochondrial oxidation, neutrophil activity, glycolysis and lipolysis processes. The level of malondialdehyde (MDA) is the most frequently used parameter for assessing oxidative stress conditions in the body. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can neutralize the effects of free radicals through electron transfer mechanisms. This study aims to determine the effect of vitamin C on MDA levels in medical students of Jember University who experienced psychological stress. This is clinical test study with Quasi Experimental approach that used Pretest - Posttest Control Group Design with 32 sample of medical students Jember University who experienced psychological stress. The level of psychological stress was determined through questionnaire of Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) version Damanic Indonesian while the examination of MDA levels by the TBARs test. The result of T test analysis between MDA level at pretest and posttest is p= 0,000. It shows that there is effect of vitamin C consumption to the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in medical students Jember University with psychological stress.
