Abstract

Urbanization is considered to be an ingrained social phenomenon in various large Indonesian cities, characterized by rapid urban population growth and drastic changes in social, economic and environmental structures. Urbanization in Indonesia shows a rapid increasing trend over the last few decades. Medan City, as one of the main urban centers in North Sumatra, has not escaped the impact of significant urbanization. Along with rapid economic and demographic growth, the city has experienced a major transformation in various aspects of city life. This research aims to identify the history of urbanization in Medan City from a social perspective. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method through literature study sourced from journals, scientific articles, books and other relevant sources. The results of this research show that urbanization in Medan City has been going on for a long time. Strategically located on the east coast of Sumatra and between the confluence of the Deli River and the Babura River, Medan has vital trade access to the Malacca Strait. Especially in the period 2012 to 2022, the increase in population in Medan City occurred in almost all sub-districts. Of the 21 sub-districts, 17 sub-districts experienced an increase in population of more than 10%. Only one sub-district experienced a decline in population, namely Medan Baru Sub-district by 7.89%. The high level of urbanization in the city of Medan is generally caused by several factors, such as strategic location, the presence of natural resources (SDA), and supporting natural conditions. Meanwhile, the impact on society's social life includes rapid population growth, changes in societal structure, and social and cultural dynamics. Keywords: History, Urbanization, Social, Medan City

Abstract

HOTS learning that includes analysis, evaluation, and creation is a challenge in 21st-century learning. This includes understanding the values of local wisdom to encourage analytical, creative, and evaluative thinking towards complex cultural heritage. In its development, critical and reflective thinking to understand local wisdom is influenced by factors such as gender and interpersonal intelligence. Understanding local wisdom not only requires cognitive abilities but also concerns one's position in society, gender roles, and interpersonal intelligence. Gender influences students' historical perspectives and experiences, while interpersonal intelligence relates to students' experiences in interacting, discussing, and analyzing local values. This study aims to explore the relationship between gender identity and interpersonal intelligence in influencing HOTS thinking in history learning based on local wisdom. Using a quantitative approach with descriptive statistical methods with a population of history students who take local wisdom courses selected through purposive sampling. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant influence of gender on higher-order thinking skills (HOTS), especially in the aspect of critical thinking in learning local wisdom, while in interpersonal intelligence, men and women have equivalent results. In addition, interpersonal intelligence does not significantly affect HOTS abilities. So it can be concluded that strategies that can bridge collaboration between genders will create successful local wisdom learning. Key words: Gender, HOTS, Interpersonal Intelligence,  Local Wisdom

Abstract

The development of rubber plantations in East Sumatra during the colonial period absorbed a lot of workers, including women. In an unequal work structure, women occupy the most vulnerable positions. This study aims to analyze the experience, gender inequality, and survival strategies of women workers in rubber plantations during the colonial period. The methods used are historical methods, including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Data sources come from colonial archives such as Memorie van Overgave, Staatsblad van Nederlandsch-Indie, Algeemene Secretarie, Koloniale Verslag, and newspapers. The study highlights the injustices experienced by women workers, such as low wages, long working hours, separation from family, sexual exploitation, and harsh punishment. Gender inequality is not only evident in the division of labor, but also from the systemic exploitative practices hidden behind the productivity narrative. These findings show that gender-based power relations formed the face of injustice in East Sumatra rubber plantations during the colonial period. Through the Women Behind Rubber case study, this research offers a new perpective on gender dynamics in an exploiative economic and political context. The main contribution of this research is its ability to connect past hstory with contempory issues related to gender equality and workers rights. Its implications are highly relevant to our current efforts in addressing gender inequality in modern industrial sector, as well as promoting more inclusive and pro-women policies.

Abstract

This research examines newspapers in North Sumatra that published beauty advertisements, catering to the aesthetic needs of individuals, especially women seeking self-care and beauty enhancement. The study aims to track the development in types and content of cosmetics advertisements and the advertising stages during the period from 1940 to 1945. Employing semiotics and discourse analysis, this research integrates data collection through interviews and analysis techniques to explore advertisements on women's beauty in mass media published in the Batak region of North Sumatra from 1940 to 1945. Advertisements in these media often depict European women, reflecting an ideology that positioned Europeans as inherently superior to natives. Through visual and narrative strategies, cosmetics advertisements propagated a concept of Western beauty to the indigenous population of the archipelago. This article discusses beauty concepts, such as the allure of a slim physique, a prominent nose, and curly hair, as conveyed by pre-independence media advertisements.
