Abstract

Abstract

Enterococcus faecalis is the main pathogenic bacterium in the root canal which is resistant to various antibacterial agents. Recently, the discovery of a new antibacterial agent research focus in herbal dentistry, one of which is basil leaves. Basil (kemangi) leaves (Ocimum basilicum) are herbs that have various active components as anti-biofilm agents. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of antibacterial potential of O. basilicum extract against the biofilm formation by E. faecalis. This research uses true experimental laboratory design. The kemangi leaves were gradually extracted with various polarity based organic solvents (n-hexane and ethyl acetate). The evaluation of the anti-biofilm activity of the extracts against E. faecalis aimed to determine the minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC) and minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) values. Calcium hydroxide paste (calcipex) was used as a positive control. The assay data were analyzed using an independent paired T-test. Ethyl acetate, n-hexane extract of O. basilicum, and calcipex inhibited biofilm formation by E. faecalis with MBIC values of 100%, 100%, and 75.20% at the concentrations of 2.5%, 10%, and 3.13%, respectively. The MBEC values were 100%, 100%, and 71.01% at the concentrations of 5%, 2.5%, and 3.13%, respectively. The statistical analysis by ANOVA test on MBIC and MBEC showed significant differences with p-values < 0.05. Further statistical valuation with post hoc analysis showed highly significant differences with p-values < 0.01. This study has found that O. basilicum leaves extracts have the capacity and ability to inhibit and eradicate E. faecalis biofilms.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Developmental defect of enamel (DDE) is a defect on the surface of the enamel layer thatoccurs during tooth development due to various genetic and environmental factors. Defects that occurresult in changes in color and texture on the enamel surface so that it interferes with aesthetics. Thedefect level that happens can be classified based on the DDE index to determine the option of a casetreatment plan consisting of enamel microabrasion, conservative aesthetic restoration, and bleaching. This review aims to analyze and review studies related to DDE in primary and permanent teeth. Anelectronic search was conducted through PubMed/Medline, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar,SpringerLink, and Wiley Online Library using the keywords defect email, developmental defectemail, and defect on primary teeth for research published between January 2011 and April 2020, thesame article was eliminated, the initial search resulted in a total of 55 articles. The exclusion of articleswas carried out based on the title and abstract so that finally, 45 relevant articles were obtained. Threestudies were included in this review for qualitative analysis. The results show that Enamel (DDE)Developmental defects can occur in both primary and permanent teeth with the same prevalence rate. KEYWORDS: Developmental Defect of Email (DDE), DDE Index, defect to primary teeth, defect topermanent teeth

Abstract

Background: Pseudo Class III malocclusion is characterized by an anterior crossbite with functional forward mandibular displacement. This malocclusion can prevent maxillary sagittal development, and if not intervened upon promptly, can develop into a skeletal class III malocclusion. Therefore, it is essential to avoid this malocclusion as early as possible. Case Report: A 9-year-old male child presented with the chief complaint of prominent lower teeth. Intra-oral examination showed crossbite anterior, presence of crowding, and malposition 21,22. Right molar relation class 1 and left class III, maxillary space discrepancy 6.4 mm, skeletal Class I, patient in growth and development period. Treatment was performed using a functional appliance, a reverse twin block, with additional bilateral expansion on the maxilla and a Z-spring on teeth 21 and 22. Conclusion: Management of pseudo-class III in growing children with reverse twin block has shown success in correcting the crossbite anterior, tooth malposition, and increasing the maxillary arch width.
