Abstract

The increasing use of digital devices in children has been associated with the progression of myopia. This literature review aims to analyze the relationship between screen time duration and myopia acceleration in children. The study was conducted by reviewing 12 journals published between 2019 to 2024, using prospective and retrospective observational methods. The results showed that children who spent more than 3-4 hours per day in front of the screen experienced more significant axial elongation and refractive changes than those with lower duration of use. In addition, online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a major factor in the increase in the duration of digital device use, contributing to the accelerated progression of myopia. The literature research involved searching online scientific databases such as Pubmed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar and ProQuest. This study emphasizes the importance of reducing screen time and increasing outdoor activities to reduce the risk of myopia in children.

Abstract

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide and often goes undetected until the advanced stages. Risk factors include advanced age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and refractive errors such as myopia and hypermetropia. Objective: To describe the demographic and clinical profile of glaucoma patients at UKRIDA Hospital, West Jakarta. Methods: This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. Data were obtained from the medical records of glaucoma patients examined at UKRIDA Hospital between July 2024 and March 2025. The variables analyzed included age, gender, systemic diseases, refractive errors, and intraocular pressure (IOP). Results: Most patients were over 70 years old (39.7%) and male (61.6%). A total of 49.3% had systemic diseases, primarily hypertension. The most common refractive error was myopia (45.2%). Elevated IOP was found in 26.0% of right eyes and 31.5% of left eyes. Conclusion: Glaucoma patients at UKRIDA Hospital are predominantly elderly males with risk factors such as hypertension and myopia. The presence of normal IOP in many cases suggests the possibility of normal-tension glaucoma. Broader screening and public education are needed for early detection.

Abstract

The eye is the organ we use to see. Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, 15% of school-age children experience refractive disorders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, the incidence of asthenopia globally is estimated to range from 75% to 90%. The purpose of the study was to determine the description of teachers' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding refractive disorders and asthenopia in students of the INSANI Sukabumi Integrated Islamic School in 2025. Using a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach, sampling using the total population method. The research sample consisted of 60 respondents. Data collection was carried out by filling out a questionnaire. The results showed that teachers who had good knowledge of refractive disorders were 28.3%, sufficient 48.3%, and lacking 23.3%. good attitude 93.3%, sufficient 6.4%. good behavior 50%, sufficient 21.7%, and lacking 28.3%. Teachers who have good knowledge about Astenopia 15%, sufficient 36.7%, lacking 48.3%. good attitude 98.3%, sufficient 1.7%. good behavior 41.7%, sufficient 15%, and lacking 43.3%. Increasing knowledge is an important step to support positive attitudes, so that they can be translated into consistent and appropriate behavior in supporting students' visual health in the school environment.

Abstract

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that can affect visual quality. Understanding the profile of astigmatism is essential to provide accurate vision correction. Purpose : describe the astigmatism profile based on age, gender, type of astigmatism, and meridian axis among visitors of Optik Melawai Living World Alam Sutera in 2025. Methods: This is a descriptive quantitative study using a cross-sectional design. The study involved 146 randomly selected participants who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected through subjective refraction examinations using a phoropter and Snellen chart. Results : Astigmatism was most commonly found in females (54.8%) and in the 22-27 years age group (30.8%). The most common type of astigmatism was Compound Myopic Astigmatism, found in 71.2% of both right and left eyes. The dominant meridian axis was With the Rule in 51.3% of cases in both eyes. Conclusion: Compound Myopic Astigmatism and With the Rule meridian axis are the most common astigmatism profiles found among visitors at Optik Melawai Living World Alam Sutera in 2025. Careful refraction examinations and good communication between examiner and patient are essential to ensure accurate measurement results.

Abstract

Dry eye syndrome is a common complaint, especially in the elderly and people with diabetes mellitus (DM). Diabetes can affect the quality and stability of the tear film. Subjective assessment using the Dry Eye Questionnaire-5 (DEQ-5) is often used to screen for dry eye symptoms. Purpose: To determine the differences in DEQ-5 scores between DM and non-DM patients aged 45–80 years at Ukrida Hospital. Method: This study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 200 respondents divided between DM and non-DM patients. Data collection was carried out by distributing the DEQ-5 questionnaire, and the results were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: A total of 30.5% of respondents experienced dry eye symptoms. There was no significant difference in DEQ-5 scores between DM and non-DM groups (p = 0.746), or in the age subgroups <55 years (p = 0.846) and >56 years (p = 1.000). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in DEQ-5 scores between DM and non-DM patients aged 45–80 years. Other factors such as glycemic control, duration of DM, and use of topical therapy may also affect dry eye symptoms.

Abstract

Binocular vision disorders in early childhood can affect visual development and learning ability. This study aims to determine the characteristics and prevalence of binocular vision disorders in preschool children at PAUD TAT Al-Arif K-Yana, BKB Mawar Calistung, and TK Islam Al-Amin. The study was conducted on 122 children aged 3–7 years using a quantitative descriptive design. The majority of respondents were female (58.2%) and aged between 5 and 6 years. Refraction test results showed that emmetropia was the most common condition in the right eye (61.5%) and left eye (60.7%). The Hirschberg test revealed that 13.9% of the children had exotropia, while 86.1% had a central and symmetrical light reflex. No heterophoria abnormalities were found, either at distance or near vision. This study highlights the importance of early screening to detect binocular vision disorders in preschool children so that early intervention can be carried out to prevent future visual developmental problems
