This self-observation report aims to investigate the translanguaging practices of teacher-students’ interactions in multilingual classrooms in an International Islamic Boarding School (henceforth: Pesantren). Since Pesantren is a multilingual and multicultural melting pot for Islam-based character building, it is necessary for English teachers in Pesantren to consider some relevant teaching approaches that merit to the needs of multilingual classrooms. Through extensive navigation, we found that translanguaging is one of referred teaching approaches that can accommodate the needs of learning English in multilingual context. However, empirical findings using translanguaging approach in Pesantren is found rare so far. Thus, this study is focused on the use of translanguaging to facilitate English vocabulary learning in a multilingual context. This self-observational report describes the first author’s teaching description about her teaching practices in a Pesantren classroom. She recorded her face-to-face interaction when explaining the meaning and the functions of English vocabularies. She also documented the lesson plans, learning materials, and students’ work to complete the self-observational report. The data were then coded and analyzed with theory-driven thematic analysis. This report found that translanguaging practices that she did were code-switching and code-mixing. When the teacher practiced translanguaging, the students tended to be able to use their L1 (Bahasa Indonesia) and L2 (Arabic) as linguistic resources to learn L3 (English).

Current research in Indonesia about reading habits tends to discuss the topic quantitatively instead of exploring the process of how reading habits were developed. Whereas it is necessary to see reading habits as a process of development. Through seeing it as a process, reading habit can be seen as not just a measurable component but more into a sustained lifetime literacy. To fill this void, this research aimed to investigate the development of an adult learner’s reading habits as their lifetime literacy. In conducting this study, the researcher usednarrative inquiry as the method of the research. The data were collected through twice in-depth interviews with the participant. The data were analysed by using narrative three-dimensional aspects by Clandinin et.al (2013). In terms of temporality, the participant has experienced a reading habit since she was in Czech elementary school. Because her family maintains the habit, the reading habit remains until today. In terms of sociality, the role models of the reading habit are the participants' schoolmates and her father. In terms of spatiality, Czech has shaped the experience of the participants' reading habit. When she went back to Indonesia, the reading habit in Indonesian school was less exposed. This indicated that reading habits can be developed through the interaction of two key people. The first was the schoolteachers and the second was parents. The reading habits activity should be sustainable at school and at home.

Group discussion has played significant roles in establishing students’ collaborative skills, especially leadership. This issue is interesting to discuss since the process of establishing the skills tends to happen when the students are involved in leaderless group discussion. Previous studies suggested that leaderless group discussion has been dominated by the emergence of male students as the leader so that the engagement developed. In fact, leaderless group discussion is essential to develop students’ leadership attitude. Thus, leadership attitude should not be dependent on only one gender. To extend this issue in EFL context, especially in Indonesia, this research aims to elaborate the emergence of leadership attitude by higher education students during leaderless group discussion. Two recordings of online synchronous leaderless group discussion were collected as the data. To analyze the data, we used Speech Acts of Request and Big Five Theory of leadership attitude. This research found that female students emerged as the leader and the male students acted to be the supporting group members. The female students lead the group discussion by performing feminine leadership attitudes such as extraversion, intelligence and authoritarianism. These attitudes were manifested through the speech acts of request such as conventionally indirect (query) and direct act of request (suggestory). These findings denied the stigma that only the male gender with authoritarianism is more likely to emerge during leaderless group discussion, as for females were able to emerge by relying on not just authoritarianism but also extraversion and intelligence behind that.

This paper uses a corpus-based analysis systematic literature review to track the influence of functionalism paradigm in second language writing (SLW) over the last five years. The data were analyzed by using keywords and collocation analysis to map the closest association of functional paradigm to second language writing. It was then reviewed manually and thematized based on the research questions as the framework. Based on a corpus of 46 Scopus indexed journals ranges from 2017-2022 this study reveals that the influence of functionalism paradigm does not directly affect to SLW. Functional paradigm spawned the concept of context which then be interpreted and manifested into functional linguistic approach. Thus, studies on SLW revolves around the application of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) to either teaching or assessing SLW. The elements of functionalism paradigm that affects to SLW are the basic assumption and the values of functional paradigm that perceived each variable in a text has a purpose. As an implication, second language writing composition using SFL focuses on text purpose and lexicogrammatical features. Functional linguists perceive language diversity in second language writing as functional, ensuring mutual intelligibility if communicative functions work effectively.

This paper aims to describe how data-driven learning can be applied in English classes when teaching descriptive text to senior high school students. This study was a self-observation involving 24 high school social studies students. The data were obtained from observation of student activities during learning, and the tasks carried out by students were in accordance with the basic competencies of the descriptive text material. The data were analyzed by conducting sorting the data and analyzing the sorted data by codifying and reporting the data. The results of this study showed that the application of data-driven learning with communicative learning methods can make students more confident in their abilities during the learning process. The use of data-driven learning is expected to increase students' motivation and learning abilities, especially in the field of writing.

This research aims to analyze the argument structure of undergraduate students’ research articles that focus on the introduction section. The data collection was conducted by analyzing the proceedings in the "Background" section written by undergraduate students at university in Indonesia. The data were then analyzed by using a corpus. This research found type of argument of this study were proclaim, disclaim, entertain, and attribute. The lexical choice that was used proclaim with a total of 46. The lexemes entertain a total of 37. The next lexical choice that was used is disclaim with a total of 33. Finally, attribute a total of 26 as the lowest engagement in appraisal.

This study aims to observe the development of translation studies through three concepts of descriptive translation studies; product-based, processbased, and functional-based translation studies. The readers are introduced to some famous translation scholars including their view of translation studies. At the further discussions, this study lets the readers acknowledge the main issues on translation studies, focusing on the debate of equivalence versus variations in intertextual texts analysis. Some tendencies of variations, such as different grammar and sentence structure, diglossia leakage, and pragmatic consideration are also presented to present to what extent variations occur during investigation processes. Therefore, regarding those tendencies, this study is closed by the description of Matthiessen's proposals about points of consideration to construct a parameter to measure meaning variations. This study may help those who are interested to conduct translation researches and help them by giving options of which theories is beneficial to their analysis.Key words: translation studies, variations, intertextual texts analysis

Entering multicultural society involves two participants, foreigners and natives. Due to globalization issues, multicultural society are required to have not only a good language competence but also a deep understanding of culture and religious belief. A long process of understading each other force the praticipants to have a good adaptation, which reveals some problems, such as culture shocks and alienation. Moreover, these problems hang on both parties. Therefore, analyzing the symptoms and forms of culture shocks is interesting leading to the way to overcome. One sample of multicultural society grows in Yogyakarta. The number of foreigners aim to study Bahasa Indonesia deal with Yogyakarta people as native Javanese are unique for their inquiries and comments towards Javanese culture. This research shows that although some forms of culture shocks strongly happened, they finally could manage to adapt with some strict normative rules and make friends to Indonesian people.Keywords: intercultural communication, cultural shocks

Humor is special tool of communication for its multifunction in any discourses. Its flexibility has been used by many people, of all social class, to deliver criticisms, tragedy of commons and happening issues in a funny way.This is because humor and culture are inseparable. Humor importance is undoubtedly effective to reveal the codes in cultures, politics, and education. The creation is interesting to discuss in this essay because it demands creativity, and its acceptance asks for high cognitive ability. However, a wrong perception of humor which is caused by different cultural background, and lackness of language competence is the core problem that may create missunderstanding. Through linguistics point of view, conversational principles constructed by Paul Grice is chosen as the approach of humor analysis.Keywords: pragmatics, cooperative principles, flouted maxims

Pre-service teachers’ (PST) learning engagement in online learning as the contributing factor in determining students’ successful learning was less elaborated. It is important to explore the process of having meaningful learning engagement experiences. This study aims at elaborating on how learning engagement and meaning making, as experienced by two pre-service teachers, inspired them to successfully teach online in a variety of student contexts with the tools provided. The participants of this study were two pre-service teachers who participated in teaching internships as a mandatory program from their university. The type of this study was qualitative and was then analyzed by narrative analysis. Through multiple interviews and three months of Instagram stories, this study found two pre-service teachers employed learning engagement, especially cognitive engagement, in their distance learning process. The finding was elaborated into two themes; (1) cognitive engagement as a meaningful experience and (2) shared responsibility to achieve behavioral engagement.
