Abstract

Grouper (Family Serranidae) is one of the betanodavirus hosts. Betanodaviruses can infect species in tropical, subtropical or cold climates. This is a major concern because it has been reported to infect a variety of marine fish, both farmed and wild fish. The disease caused by this virus is commonly known as Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) or Viral Encephalopathy and Retinopathy (VER). This VNN disease is characterized by vacuolar necrosis of cells found in the brain, retina and spinal cord, can cause up to 100% mortality in larvae and juveniles and can cause significant losses in older fish. Infected fish, both wild and farmed, can act as reservoirs (nesting sites and breeding grounds for viruses) and can be a source of infection for farmed species. The method used in this study was descriptive method, while the Lunar-Tailed grouper (Variola sp.) samples used in this study were groupers caught measuring 26-42 cm. VNN testing on groupers by taking target organs (brains and eyes) then fixing them in 95% Ethanol then PCR testing at the Virology Laboratory. The results of this study indicate a different prevalence in the two waters in Gorontalo.

Abstract

Highlight Research There are 26 species identified to be originated from the bay, which the highest diversity in Indonesia Six species found in Kwandang Bay is showing trends of decreasing populations and two species vulnerable based on IUCN conservation list Growth model and Fulton condition factor determined for 14 species indicates that they live in a good state of well beings in the bay The models and condition factors also reflect the adequate food resources required for grouper growth which makes Kwandang Bay as a good habitat for groupers   Abstract Grouper fishery has been the source of income for 3,700 fishermen in Kwandang Bay. Since 2017, grouper populations in Kwandang have been depleting due to the absence of management. This research aimed to analyze species composition, length-weight relationship, and condition factor of the groupers. Samples were collected from fishers who caught the fish using traps, speargun, and handline. Samples were identified through a method by Heemstra and Randall, while the length-weight relationship was estimated using log-linear regression and t-test. The number of specimens identified during January - December 2021 was 1,571 individuals. Research showed that those samples consisted of 26 species under eight genera. Six species found in Kwandang Bay were showing trends of decreasing populations and two species were vulnerable based on the IUCN conservation list. Length-weight relationship analysis of 14 grouper species resulted in b value ranging from 1.6359 to 3.4417 and R2 ranges from 0.7718 to 0.9858. A significant test at a 95% confident interval showed that 14 species had an isometric growth pattern. Fulton condition factors show that Kwandang Bay is an essential habitat for groupers, and the bay can support the fish growth due to the adequate food availability.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the inhibition value of turmeric (Curcuma longa) against Salmonella and Escherichia coli and evaluate the bacterial population in the small intestinal digesta of Mojosari ducks. This study was arranged using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments and four replications; eachreplication consisted of eight Mojosari ducks. The in vitro study used four treatments of different concentrations of turmeric, consisting of Control/only water (C0), turmeric 98% + 2% water(C1), Probiotic 98% and 2% water (C2), turmeric 92%, and probiotic 8% (C3),and Bacitracin 92% + water 8% (C4). Then, the inhibition zone diameter was measured using the agar well diffusion method. On the other hand, the in vivo study was carried out by employing 192 Mojosari duck raised for 60 days. They were given the following dietary treatments, namely T0= basal diet, T1= basal diet supplemented with turmeric 0.2%, T2= basal diet supplemented with supplemented with turmeric 0.8%, T3= basal diet supplemented with turmeric 0.2%+probiotic 0.1% and T4=feed basal supplemented with supplemented with turmeric 0.8% + probiotic 0.6%, and T5 = basal diet + Zinc Bacitracin 0.01%. The variables measured were the total bacterial population based on the Total Plate Count (TPC) in the small intestinal digesta of Mojosari ducks. The Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The differences among means were tested using theLeast Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Abstract

Community Service Activities entitled Freshwater Lobster and Silkworm Cultivation, were carried out from September to November 2024. The need for freshwater lobster feed that is difficult to obtain makes natural feed such as silkworm cultivation, an alternative to be used as feed for freshwater lobster cultivation. In addition, Freshwater Lobster cultivation is still very rarely carried out in the Gorontalo area, thus providing opportunities and benefits for inmates to be able to become independent after leaving prison. The need for freshwater lobster feed that is difficult to obtain makes natural feed for larvae/fry such as silkworms, an alternative to be used as feed for freshwater lobster cultivation. This PKM activity is a new hope for inmates to get a sustainable livelihood and income.

Abstract

The high cost and difficulty in meeting the nutritional requirements of feed presentfundamental challenges in the cultivation of humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis).Supplementary feed in the form of anchovies (Stolephorus sp) is an alternative source of nutrientsto support growth and survival. This study aims to evaluate how anchovy supplementation affectsthe growth rate, survival rate, and feed efficiency in the rearing of juvenile humpback grouper. The study utilized a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments, each replicatedthree times. Data obtained from observations were analyzed using ANOVA and the LeastSignificant Difference (LSD) test to identify treatments that showed significant differences.Treatment C yielded the highest daily growth rate at 5.75% and the best absolute length gain of4.03 cm. Treatments B and C showed the highest survival rates, reaching 93.33%, and thehighest feed efficiency, with a value of 0.224. During the research, water temperature ranged from28.17°C to 31.09°C, pH levels were between 7.02 and 8, and salinity ranged from 31.11 to 34.92ppt. The results indicate that adding anchovy feed significantly improves juvenile humpbackgrouper growth and feed efficiency, but does not significantly affect their survival rate.
