Abstract

Bioremediation is a method that use microorganism to extract heavy metal from contaminated waste. In this research Aspergillus niger was used to extract heavy metal such as Pb and Cd of marine sediment from Waiheru shore, Inner part of Ambon Bay, which was detected as significantly high heavy metal contaminated site among seven sites. Bioremediation were done using Aspergillus nigers to extract Pb and Cd metal from sediment, then their solubility being measured in filtrate media. Result shows that Cd metal were only detected 15 days after incubation while Pb were detected since the first day incubation. This result also showing the fluctuating solubility of Pb metal. It is suspected that this occurs due to biosorption ability of the fungi that being used which triggers metal accumulation in the cell structure. It is therefore can be concluded that Aspergillus niger can be used in bioremediation of sediment that are being contaminated by Pb and Cd heavy metals.

Abstract

Gold reserves on Gunung Botak (Bald Mountain), Buru Island, were discovered in 2011. Since then, thousands of illegal miners have used amalgamation methods to extract gold in the areas of Gunung Botak and Gogrea, Buru Island. The resulting waste is disposed of into the environment directly without any treatment process so it is very dangerous for humans and the environment. This research was conducted to determine the ability of the Enhalus acoroides type of seagrass to accumulate heavy metal mercury (Hg) in the aquatic environment. This research shows that the heavy metal mercury has been distributed in the water sediments along Kayeli Bay. Mercury bio-concentration (accumulation) Gunung Botak, Kayeli Bay, Mercury (Hg), bioconcenstration, Seagrass, Enhalus acoroides, Kayeli Baywas found in Enhalus acoroides seagrass, in leaves (0.0243-0.0373 mg/Kg), and in rhizomes (0.0453-0.0663 mg/Kg). This result shows that the Kayeli Bay ecosystem has been contaminated with mercury.

Abstract

Abstract

Mercury is a neurotoxic heavy metal with high bioaccumulation ability in aquatic biota, such as mangrove crabs (Scylla serrata), mangrove snails (Telescopium telescopium), and mangrove mussels (Polymesoda erosa), which are widely consumed by humans, and used as bioindicators of pollution. This study aimed to analyze the effect of mercury solution concentration and species differences on mercury absorption in the three biota. The method used was experimental treatment with mercury concentrations of 1 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm, and control. Samples were analyzed using the AAS Cold Vapor method at the IPB Bogor Proling Laboratory. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially using two-way Anova with an α level of 0.05, followed by the Duncan Test if the hypothesis was accepted. Research data will be processed using SPSS 26.0 software. The results showed that mercury concentration and species differences influenced the ability to absorb mercury. Mangrove clams had the highest mercury accumulation compared to mangrove snails and mangrove crabs, especially in the 5 ppm and 10 ppm treatments. The highest mercury exposure occurred on the second day of observation.

Abstract

Seagrass is a type of vegetation that is able to live and develop well in coastal areas and is a habitat for several types of marine animals, such as sea cucumbers, sea urchins, starfish and sea urchins. Seagrass is an organism that is susceptible to pollution of the coastal environment such as mercury (Hg) so that it has an impact on the chlorophyll content of seagrass leaves. This study aims to determine the content of heavy metal Hg and its relationship with the chlorophyll content of seagrass Enhalus acoroides in the waters of Marlosso and Nametek in Buru District Maluku Province. The study was conducted in May 2018 and laboratory analysis was conducted in June 2018. Samples were taken at two stations namely Nametek Beach and Muos Sungai Marlosso. The results showed that the content of heavy metal Hg in roots> rhizoma> seagrass leaves. The content of heavy metals and seagrass chlorophyll content has a negative correlation where the Hg metal has a correlation of (r = - 0.97) and indicates that the higher the content of heavy metals will reduce the seagrass chlorophyll content
