Abstract

Water apple is one of agricultural commodities in Indonesia, including Riau Province. In this Province, this species is mainly distributed in Pekanbaru and Kampar. The diversity of water apple in both regions is high, however, there is no record of its morphological diversity study. This study aimed to identify and to know the diversity of water apple from Pekanbaru and Kampar based on the morphological characters. This research had been carried out from April 2013 to January 2014 using survey and observation methods. The morphological characters were observed and described. The scoring of morphological characters was then analyzed using NTSYS-pc 2.02i. The numbers of variation found in tree, leaf, flower, fruit and seed were 4, 5, 7, 9 and 3 respectively. The similarity coefficient ranged from 0.16 to 0.77. The highest similarity was found on individual R8 and R7, while the lowest similarity coefficient was found on individual KM10 and BR8. Result of cluster analysis showed that the relationship of water apples ranged from 0.41 to 0.78.

Abstract

The local people from Siak Hulu, Kampar have traditional knowledge about the use of plant for medicinal purposes. One of plant family mainly used for medicinal plant is Zingiberaceae. This research aimed to investigate the use of Zingiberaceae for traditional medicine in Siak Hulu, Kampar. This research had been carried out from June 2012 toDecember 2013. A total of four study sites were selected. The herbarium and plant identification were prepared in the Laboratory of Botany, Department of Biology, Facultyof Mathematic and Natural Sciences. The result showed that 10 Zingiberaceae species used by local people in Siak Hulu for traditional medicine were Curcuma Domestica, Zingiberofficinale, Kaemferia galanga, Alpinia galanga, Zingiber cassumunar, Zingiber Americans, Alpinia zerumbet, Alpinia conchigera, Zingiber officinale var. rubrum. All of the specieswere herb type. It was also found that the common way in using the medicinal plant was by being pounded.

Abstract

Many kinds of rubber plants (Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex A. Juss) Mull. Arg.)has been cultivated in Riau Province. Phenetic analysis of rubber plants can giveinformation about their relationship. Study to obtain information about the relationshipamong rubber plants which are grown in 5 rubber plantation centers in Riau wasconducted based on isozyme markers. A total of 15 trees had been studied. The sampleswere taken from 5 regencies i.e. Bengkalis, Meranti, Kuantan Singingi, Kampar, andRokan Hulu using an exploration method. Four enzymes (PER, EST, ACP, and AAT)were used for similarity and clustering analysis using NTSys program version 2.02. Theresult of this research showed 19 polymorphic bands, 9 bands from PER, 5 bands fromEST, 2 bands from ACP, and 3 bands from AAT enzyme. The similarity analysis of 15individuals showed that the similarity coefficient ranged from 0.47-1. The clusteringresult showed that all of individuals were grouped at the coefficient of 0.59. Most of thesamples were grouped together based on the band similarity. However, all of samplescollected from Bengkalis, as well as Kuantan Singingi, formed a cluster due to the highband similarity.

Abstract

Padang island is one of the islands that has the high Sago germplasm (Metroxylon sagu) in Kepulauan Meranti, Riau Province. This region has abundant sago bark waste called sago uyung but it has not been used properly. Sago uyung potentially produce a strong and termite resistant wood that can be used as handcraft raw material. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of wood soaking in three water types to the strength of uyung spined-sago of Padang island based on fiber characters. The uyungs of spined-sago were collected from three different habitats of sago, i.e. peat habitat, transition zone of peat and clay habitat as well as clay habitat, and treated in three water types, i.e. peat, sea and fresh water. The measurement and observation of fiber characters used a maseration method. This result showed that based on the treatments, uyung that soaked on the sea water gave the best result due to the longest and widest fiber. Moreover, based on the types of habitat, uyung from the transition zone of peat and clay habitat had the longest and widest fiber. The interaction of uyung from the transition zone of peat and clay habitat with sea water soaking was more effective in producing a strong sago uyung.

Abstract

Pelawan plant (Tristaniopsis whiteana Griff.) is used by people for blood cleaner after postpartum. Scientifically, pelawan is proven as antiurolithiasis agent. However, its secondary metabolite toxicity is still unknown. This study aimed to know the histological structure of liver tissue of white rat after being given pelawan extract. This study use 8 white rats that were divided into four groups. Control group was given food and water, P1 was given food and inducer solution (mixture from ethylene glycol and ammonium chloride), P2 group was given ethanol extract of pelawan leaves with inducer solution, and P3 group was given ethanol extract of pelawan leaves. Histological slides of white rat liver were made using paraffin method, stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE). Result showed that the liver of white rat changed. Therefore, the treatment of inducer solution and ethanol extract of pelawan leaves was toxic because it changed the histopatologycal part.

Abstract

Indonesia has many medicinal plant species that are distributed in many regions. Green grass jelly (Cyclea barbata (L.) Miers.)is one of medicinal plant that used in traditional medicine by Indonesian people. This species used to treat inflammation, fever and others. The main content of green grass jelly are saponins, flavonoids and alkaloids. Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi can infect the human body, but the green grass jelly can inhibit the growth of these bacteria. This study was performed using four methods, maceration, fresh leaf grinding, fresh and dried leave boiling, the dilution series (10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) were applied for each method. The best result among four methods was the maceration method with 100% concentration dilution. The treatment using E. coli showed the widest diameter of inhibition zone was 17.23 mm and the lowest diameter  was 7,70 mm. while the treatment using S. typhi showed the widest diameter was 15.89 mm and the lowest diameter was 6,85 mm. The higher  the concentrations used, the wider the inhibition zone diameter was.

Abstract

Musa balbisiana Colla in Kuantan Singingi Regency can survive from the disease which causes banana in many other areas disappeared. Currently, there is no information about the diversity of M. Balbisiana from Kuantan Singingi. The purposesof this study were to record, to characterize, and to measure the diversity of M. balbisiana from Kuantan Singingi based on morphological characters. M. balbisiana Colla plants was sampled from three locations in Kuantan Singingi, they were Pangean, Cerenti, and Inuman. Morphological characters of M. balbisiana were analyzed using 88 characters. Analysis of UPGMA was conducted to find out the diversity of M.Balbisiana. We found six M.balbisiana cultivars, namely Aceh, Bungo, Kara, Jambi, Nipah, Beluluk. Similarity coefficient values between six banana cultivars ranged from 63%-89%. Cluster analysis based on 88 morphological characters of M. balbisianaproduced dendogram with 2 primary groups at percentage of similarity values of 66%.
