Abstract

Background: Physical exercises provide benefits for everyone. Riset Kesehatan Dasar 2018 shows increased proportion of Indonesian who lack of exercise from 26.1% to 33.5%. Inadequate exercise can reduce productivity which can lead to excessive internet use and increasing the severity of depression. Objectives: To know the association between duration of exercise against duration of internet usage and the severity of depression amongst Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta students. Methods: This is a non-experimental quantitative cross-sectional study on students of State Islamic University Jakarta using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 instrument, which has been validated by Confirmatory Factor Analysis method. Data were analysed by (1) descriptive statistics to obtain respondents general characteristics and the variables, (2) independent sample T-test to analyze the mean difference between the variables of men and women, (3) linear regression test to examine the relationship between the variables. Results: From 704 respondents, we found that 62.1% lacked of exercise, 57.8% using internet excessively, and 71.3% suffering moderate to severe depression. Furthermore, these results were common in women. There was significant negative association between duration of exercise (p-value = 0.000) and duration of internet usage, significant negative association between duration of exercise (p-value = 0.000) with the severity of depression, and significant positive association between duration of internet usage (p-value = 0.031) with the severity of depression. Conclusions: There is a significant association between duration of exercise with duration of internet usage and the severity of depression amongst Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta students. Keyword : Exercise, Excessive Internet Use, Internet Addiction, Depression, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)

Abstract

This paper describes PPIM’s research entitled “ The Impact and Resilience of Senior High School Education Institutions in Islamic Boarding Schools (Pesantren) during the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis: Study of 15 Pesantren in Jakarta, Banten, and West Java” (PPIM, 2021). This study is to observe the resilience and vulnerability of a pesantren towards the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the research also aims to explore the role of nyai (a wife of kiai, a pesantren leader) during the pandemic. The study was conducted from May to November 2021. The result of this study was presented to the public in January 2022.The Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) Republic of Indonesia reported that the pandemic impacted around 68 million students who were forced to do online learning (Puspita, 2021). Pesantren are one of the educational institutions in Indonesia that focus on Islamic teaching. One of the most critical aspects of a pesantren is the dormitory that enables students (santri) to live together in one environment. The essence of pesantren is to train the santri to be independent and educate them to have Islamic values. This essence can only be achieved through direct teaching. When most schools carried out online learning to avoid transmission of the COVID-19 virus, pesantren continued to conduct offline learning as mandated by the joint decision of four Ministries; MEC, Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA), Ministry of Health (MOH), and Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) (Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan RI, 2020). Even though the Indonesian government has established a set of strict health protocols, it was found that 4.328 santri from 67 pesantren in 13 provinces were confirmed positive of COVID-19 in 2021 (Putri, 2021). A recent study by PPIM UIN Jakarta in 3 Islamic Universities found that pesantren alumni have lower knowledge, behaviour, and perception than non-pesantren alumni. In addition, the study also revealed that male students have more inadequate knowledge, behaviour, and perception than females (PPIM, 2021). On that note, the role of nyai is essential as the messenger of kiai to deliver accurate information and become a role model for santri in enforcing the rules.

Abstract

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women worldwide, and it is also the main cause of death from cancer. Fern Angiopteris angustifolia C. Presl and Liverwort Mastigophora diclados (Birs.ex Web) Nees are the plants that grow in Indonesia that are limited explored for their phytochemical and biological activity. This study aims to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of ethanolic extracts leaves of A. angustifolia and M. diclados against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7). The MTT assay was used to determine cytotoxic activity, which revealed that the ethanol extract of A. Angustifolia and M. diclados exhibited cytotoxic activity with an IC50 value of 121.8 ± 13.3 and 29.2 ±1.4 µg /mL, respectively.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Formation of tumour mass is one symptom of osteosarcoma development. Caffeic acid has been known to provide effective treatment but has less side effect for some cancer therapy. Studies reported that caffeic acid might promote apoptosis in MG-63 osteosarcoma cells, however, the effect of caffeic acid treatment in preventing tumour mass formation has not been well elucidated, especially in MG-63 cells-induced nude mice in vivo.METHODS: MG-63 cells were pre-treated with 0, 1, or 10 µg/mL caffeic acid, and 6 hours after pre-treatment, MG-63 cells were injected into subcutaneous space of mice to induce osteosarcoma. Another model was also created by subcutaneously injecting MG-63 cells to the back of mice, and after 48 days, the visible tumour mass was injected intra-tumour with 0 or 10 µg/mL caffeic acid every 7 days for 6 times. After 90 days, mice were anaesthetised, and the nodule pictures were taken for observation and measurement. RESULTS: In pre-treated MG-63 cells-induced mice, volumes of the mass decreased in reverse with the dose of caffeic acid given. Ten µg/mL caffeic acid pre-treatment was able to significantly lower the mass volume compared to the untreated (p<0.05). Meanwhile, the intra-tumour treatment of 10 µg/mL caffeic acid, even though not significant, was able to inhibit tumour mass formation.CONCLUSION: Results of caffeic acid pre-treatment and caffeic acid treatment in tumour mass of mice show that caffeic acid is able to inhibit the MG-63 cells formation. This suggests that caffeic acid can be a potential anti-cancer agent.KEYWORDS: caffeic acid, osteosarcoma, MG-63 cells, tumour mass

Abstract

Small Mother Against Decapentaplegic 3 (SMAD3), an intracellular transducer protein in the TGF-β signaling pathway, has a role in maintaining joint cartilage. Many studies have been conducted to examine the effect of polymorphism in SMAD3 gene with the incidence of osteoarthritis (OA). The objective of this study is to identify the association of SMAD3 gene rs12901499 variation with the incidence of knee OA in Indonesian women. We conducted an analytic cross-sectional design involving 24 knee OA patients and 50 non-OA subjects. The DNA was taken from saliva and genotyped using a kit from Integrated DNA Technologies with the Real Time PCR method. In this study, we found that the GA genotype (heterozygous mutant) of the rs12901499 allele was the allele that most frequently (50%) appeared in knee OA patients as well as non-OA subjects (50%). The G allele frequency was higher than the A allele among all participants. The Chi-Square analysis showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between allele variations in the SMAD3 rs12901499 gene and knee OA (p=1). In conclusion, there was no statistically significant relationship between the rs12901499 genetic variation in the SMAD3 gene and the incidence of knee osteoarthritis in Indonesian aged women.

Abstract

The elderly are a population particularly susceptible to diseases resulting from the decline in immune system function. The mouth is one of the areas of the body that is the entry point for microorganisms into the body. It is known that the oral microbiome greatly affects oral and systemic health. The oral bacterial profile is important to understand its role in maintaining health and causing disease. Therefore, maintaining oral health is very important, especially in our study of the elderly. Utilizing advanced sequencing techniques such as Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) offers the opportunity to reveal bacterial diversity comprehensively. This study aims to identify the oral microbiome in a group of elderly women. Knowledge of the oral microbiota profile could help spread awareness of the benefits of maintaining good dental hygiene, especially in older adults. Methods: Seven elderly housewives had their unstimulated saliva samples taken in the morning and kept at -80°C. The phenol-chloroform technique was used to isolate the DNA, and a Qubit Fluorometer was used to measure purity and concentration. By employing ONT for 16S rRNA sequencing and Epi2Me software for analysis, taxonomic mapping of the bacterial diversity was accomplished.  Results: According to the taxonomic analysis, Streptococcus and Veillonella were the most common genera in the samples. It was common to find species like Veillonella parvula, Veillonella atypica, Streptococcus mitis, and Streptococcus rubneri. These genera contributed to the dynamics of oral biofilms by exhibiting complex ecological interactions. With advanced sequencing technologies, this work highlights the diversity of oral bacteria in elderly women in Indonesia while providing a new perspective. Notwithstanding a few limitations, these findings provide insight into the ecological dynamics of the oral microbiota, potentially leading to clinical applications in the treatment and prevention of disease.
