Abstract

It has become an unavoidable thing that modernization also brings negative effects. As a result, westernized behavior, moral decadence and spiritual dryness appear to be increasingly widespread. This needs a way as an antidote to this. One way is to return to the principles of life that are used as a form of local wisdom. The principle of life is Memayu Hayuning Bawana. This Javanese philosophy has a deep meaning that directs humans to their main goal, namely obtaining true happiness. In this study, the philosophical concept of Memayu Hayuning Bawana will be studied through the perspective of a Stoicist figure, Marcus Aurelius. This research is a type of qualitative research with descriptive analysis. There are two types of research data sources, namely primary and secondary. The data collection method is literature research which can be interpreted as an activity to search for relevant themes using several materials such as books, theses, dissertations, articles and so on. After that, the data was analyzed using the model from Miles and Huberman namely reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that the concept of meayu hayuning bawana is an attempt by the Javanese to protect, care for and beautify life. These efforts can be centered on three values, namely the relationship between humans and nature, God and humans. When the three values are aligned, the peak that will be achieved is a life that is safe and happy in essence.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the implementation of the Keputusan Direktur Jenderal Bimbingan Masyarakat Islam (Kepdirjen Bimas Islam) Number 137 of 2023 regarding the establishment of Kampung Moderasi to prevent religious conflict polarization. The research examines several Kampung Moderasi cases in West Java, particularly in the cities of Bandung and Tasikmalaya, which have implemented this policy. Kampung Moderasi aims to create a harmonious and tolerant environment in society by promoting the values of religious moderation. Using a qualitative approach, this study employs interviews, direct observation, and document review methods. The findings show that Bandung, Kampung Moderasi in Cibadak, Babakan Ciparay, and Sukawarna have made significant initiatives in strengthening interfaith relations through interfaith dialogue, educational programs, and social activities. Meanwhile, in Tasikmalaya, Kampung Moderasi in Nagarawangi and Empangsari have also made similar efforts to strengthen social cohesion and prevent conflict by developing inclusive, religion-based communities. However, despite the positive outcomes of this policy's implementation, several challenges remain, such as limited resources and the lack of participation from some segments of society. This study concludes that Kepdirjen Bimas Islam Number 137 of 2023 is effective in preventing religious conflict polarization, but there needs to be greater support from local governments, religious institutions, and society to enhance participation and ensure the sustainability of the program. The future implementation of this policy requires strengthened cooperation among stakeholders and more intensive monitoring.

Abstract

Indonesia's cultural and religious diversity poses significant challenges, particularly in fostering harmony and reducing the risk of racial and religious conflicts, as observed in Panongan District, Tangerang. This study investigates the manifestations of religious tolerance among Christians in Tangerang Regency. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study focuses on understanding societal issues through observation and literature review. The findings reveal that, within the context of Christianity, tolerance is expressed both passively—by accepting differences—and actively—through collaborative efforts. In Panongan District, interfaith tolerance is well-preserved through diverse activities that promote mutual respect and understanding among religious communities. This study concludes that fostering tolerance requires continuous engagement in inclusive practices. Its contribution lies in providing insights into the dynamics of interfaith harmony, offering a model that can be adapted to other multicultural contexts.

Abstract

Islam has universal teachings, namely human values. Ali Shari'ati is one of the Islamic revolutionary thinkers who paid attention to humanism. According to him, humanism is a school of philosophy that views groups that aim to achieve perfection in humans. Ali Shari'ati emphasized that humans are creatures that have various values given by God. Humans are the most unique nature, because humans were created by God as the noblest creatures, have their own freedom, and are not controlled by something, so that humans can determine the direction of their lives freely and be responsible for their choices. This research aims to explore Ali Shariati's thoughts related to the principles of humanism. This research is a literature study that uses a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytic method. The result of this research is that according to Ali Shariati, humans as God's representatives on earth certainly have divine values that form moral, cultural and religious values. Then, in the principle of humanism built by Ali Shari'ati, he explained that there are seven basic concepts in Islamic humanism, including humans having autonomous elements, having freedom, thinking creatures, conscious creatures, creatures that have creativity, creatures that have desires, and creatures that have morals.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the concept of freedom in the thoughts of John Stuart Mill and Muhammad Abduh as representations of Western and Islamic philosophical traditions. The background of this research lies in the complexity of interpreting freedom within different civilizational contexts, which has implications for both theoretical and practical dimensions of life. The study employs a qualitative method with a philosophical comparative approach based on library research. Primary data were obtained from the works of Mill and Abduh, supported by secondary sources such as books and scholarly articles. The findings reveal that Mill defines freedom as an individual right limited by the harm principle, aiming to create the greatest happiness for society. In contrast, Abduh places freedom within the Islamic theological framework, viewing it as a divine gift bound by moral and sharia principles. Despite fundamental differences in the sources and limitations of freedom, both thinkers agree that freedom of thought is a crucial instrument for civilizational progress. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the philosophical differences between Mill and Abduh, reflecting their respective epistemological contexts, while also highlighting opportunities for cross tradition dialogue. Recommendations from this research include developing educational policies that integrate the values of freedom and social responsibility to build a harmonious and progressive society.

Abstract

Religious education plays an important role in shaping moral values that are relevant to the challenges of the increasingly complex modern world. This study aims to compare the thoughts of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Aminah Wadud, and Reinhold Niebuhr regarding religious education, as well as explore their different perspectives that reflect the richness of their respective theological traditions. Using a qualitative approach and literature study method, this study analyzes the main works of the three figures, including Heschel's Man Is Not Alone, Wadud's Qur'an and Woman, and Niebuhr's The Nature and Destiny of Man, as well as various other relevant sources. The results of the study show that although there are similar views on the importance of religious education that prioritizes morality and social responsibility, these three thinkers have different approaches. Heschel emphasized social morality as an integral part of religious education, Wadud advocated women's empowerment and gender equality, while Niebuhr taught the importance of compromise and adaptation to the complexities of the social world. This research contributes to the development of religious education that is more inclusive and relevant to the social context, as well as enriching interfaith dialogue in a diverse global society.

Abstract

This article compares Plato’s rational view with al-Ghazali’s transcendental approach to self-control, advancing an integrative model that harmonizes rational and spiritual dimensions. Addressing the lack of systematic integration in existing literature, this study employs comparative-conceptual and hermeneutic methods to analyze the philosophical foundations of both thinkers. The results reveal that their divergence lies primarily in accentuation: Plato emphasizes rationality, whereas al-Ghazali prioritizes transcendence, a difference stemming from their distinct ethical orientations. However, significant similarities exist, providing a basis for synthesis. Consequently, this study proposes a "rational-cum-transcendental" model of self-control. In this framework, rationality evaluates the motivations and consequences of behavior, while the transcendental dimension imbues actions with higher purpose and meaning. This synthesis offers a holistic approach, contributing to Islamic philosophy and interdisciplinary discourses on self-regulation across psychology, ethics, and education
