Abstract

The process of adaptation and adoption of modern values by multicultural urban communities raises various problems, especially those related to the environment. In Surabaya and Sidoarjo, even though the Surabaya City Government and the Regional Government of Sidoarjo have carried out various environmental programs, the demands of a fast and practical modern lifestyle create egocentric and anthropocentric attitudes. Urban communities must take on the continuous socialization of ecocentric behavior that adopts modern values but must also maintain the value of local wisdom to support the realization of sustainable city. The family-based collaborative eco-literacy model is needed as a strategy to develop green living cultural values that can be practiced by all levels of society in various regions with different characteristics in both cities. This model directly touches the family as the main place to cultivate ecocentric mindset and behavior. Another consideration is that there is few government policies related to environment that directly target the family. This study illustrates how the family-based collaborative ecoliteracy model was applied to families in Surabaya and Sidoarjo and explains how the model has moved the attitudes and behavior of these families to those in line with ecocentric principles. By using a qualitative-descriptive approach, this model was applied to 16 families selected according to participant criteria. The subsequent changes in behavior were observed over a period of six months. The results of the application of the model show that each individual in the family collaborates and strengthens due to collective competence, which is an ecocentric value. Based on the orientation of green living values in eleven sustainable urban components, it can be concluded that almost all green city programs carried out by the government are intended to realize Surabaya and Sidoarjo as sustainable cities.

Abstract

Beauty standards are a cultural technique used to determine what is considered beautiful. Circe, Madeline Miller's story, exhibits a type of bias known as the beauty standard. Circe, the novel's main character and the daughter of Helios, the Sun God, is the subject of this study. Circe, the main character in this story, is treated differently, especially by her siblings, because she lacks the beautiful appearance and power of other Helios' children and ladies in her life. The goal of this study is to explain the cause of Circe's prejudice despite her upper-class status, the impact of beauty standards in Circe's life, and Circe's effort to combat beauty standards in society. This study was conducted using the New Criticism theory developed by W.K. Wimsatt and Monroe C. Beardsley. The writer adopts a qualitative descriptive method from the ground up. Circe encountered discrimination due to beauty standards, according to the findings of this study. Circe's appearance differed from that of most gods' progeny, so she did not meet these beauty standards. The writer then discovers the impact of these beauty standards on Circe's life, as well as the numerous efforts Circe makes to defy the beauty standards that surround her.

Abstract

The Holocaust is one of the dark events in history that must be remembered. There are many works in contemporary culture or even literature that apply the Holocaust theme. Unfortunately, these works make the sensitive part of this dark history deviate from the truth, which is crucial for the generation who learn about the Holocaust. Therefore, this research examined a novel with a holocaust theme titled The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. This novel is one of the novels that has become a reference for many people who want to know about the Holocaust and has even been used as learning material for young students yet received many harsh criticisms such as historical inaccuracy even though this novel is considered historical fiction. Thus, it is necessary to study this novel further in order not to mislead the readers. This research will examine readers' reviews on the GoodReads online platform. Because now is the digital era, many people are doing online reading activities and writing reviews on this platform. Analyzing reader reviews also determines the quality of the novel itself. This research will also use the transactional reader response theory by Louise Rosenblatt. Therefore, it shows how changes in meaning occur between the text and the reader's perception.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to look into the traditional food of Tulungagung. Ayamlodho is a traditional Tulungagung dish that is very popular among the locals. AyamLodho is also served with urap-urap and has a distinctive grilled and spicy sauce. AyamLodho became popular among Tulungagung residents as the main course menu at special events. The purpose of this research is to examine the meaning of AyamLodho as well as the meaning of the word Lodho. This study employs a qualitative approach. In-depth interviews, observation, document studies, literature studies, and recording sources are all used to collect data. Functional analysis is a method for deciphering the meaning of Ayamlodhofood. The goal of this review is to analyze the meaning of the traditional food "AyamLodho" using this symbolic model so that the meaning obtained is the meaning of Bronislaw Malinowski. Malinowski's theory is a progression of functionalism in terms of methods for describing the various functional relationships of cultural elements in a living social system, with a focus on cultural objects and tradition. The role of the reader is the most important object of research in this theory, and it is the role of the reader who will trigger various views on the meaning of AyamLodho's traditional food. According to the findings, the meaning of Ayam lodho with a functionalism approach is an expression of gratitude for the people of Tulungagung Regency. As for this theory, cultural and traditional sociological heritage are not biological heritage. Beliefs or religion, traditional customs, and social structures are examples of social heritage forces that influence and shape the personality born into the community.
