Abstract

Angiotensin Receptor Blocker, ARB, is a drug that acts on the AT1 receptor so as to inhibit Ang II stimulation. Ang II stimulates the main activity of the angiotensin renin system. Recent research has shown the presence of components of the RAS system in the brain, and the neuroprotective effects of the brain. ARB drugs can enter the brain and protect the blood brain flow, maintain the function of the blood brain barrier and reduce cerebral hemorrhage. The neuroprotective effect of ARB not only arises from improved cerebrovascular blood flow (improved access to oxygen and nutrients) but also decreased factors that can cause brain injury, including decreased excitotoxicity of glutamate which causes inflammatory response and apoptosis, decreased inflammatory response of interleukin-1β and bacterial endotoxin. In addition, there are additional effects through the PPARγ activation mechanism. Based on these benefits ARBs can be developed for the purpose of treating various brain disorders, in this case improving cognitive function, such as vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and others.

Abstract

Introduction. Metabolic syndrome is the constellation of metabolic abnormalities that are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes melitus. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in younger people is increasing along with the increased prevalence of obesity. Waist circumference and blood pressure measurement are simple examinations for early detection of metabolic syndrome. Excessive consumption of carbohydrates is one of the factors that cause health problems. But the data of these measurements and food records of medical students in Universitas Sriwijaya were not documented yet. Methods. This study was an observational analytic cross-sectional study with proportionate stratified random sampling. This study used primary data from forms, questionnaires, food records, and physical examinations collected from 275 medical students. The data were analyzed with an independent t-Test for normally distributed data or with Mann Whitney for not normally distributed data. Results. There was a significant relationship between carbohydrate intake and waist circumference (p-value = 0,048) but no relationship between carbohydrate intake and blood pressure (p-value for systolic blood pressure = 0,720 and diastolic blood pressure = 0,847). Conclusion. These findings show an association between carbohydrate intake and waist circumference, but no association between carbohydrate intake and blood pressure (systolic and diastolic blood pressure).

Abstract

Introduction. The need for Vitamin D can be fulfilled through direct synthesis from Vitamin D stores in the skin with the help of ultraviolet B rays. Therefore, sufficient Vitamin D intake and sun exposure are needed. Most of the activities of medical students on campus are indoors from morning to evening, so it is suspected that there is a risk of Vitamin D deficiency. The purpose of this study was to identify the risk of Vitamin D deficiency based on the characteristics of Vitamin D from food intake and sun exposure in Faculty of Medicine students, Universitas Sriwijaya. Methods. This research was a descriptive study using a questionnaire and observation. Age, sex, BMI and use of related drugs were recorded. The food survey method used was the repeated food recall which was then analyzed using Nutrisurvey 2007. Subjects filled out a questionnaire to obtain data on exposure scores and sun protection scores. The research subjects were students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sriwijaya who were willing to sign informed consent and were present at the time of sampling. Results. The results from the data of 259 subjects showed that 98.8% of the subjects did not meet their vitamin D intake needs, with an average consumption of 123 ± 142 IU. Types of food that contribute the most Vitamin D are catfish (40%) and eggs (20%). None of the subjects took supplements containing Vitamin D. Sun exposure was sufficient for most subjects (62.9%), but most subjects were at risk of deficiency due to the use of sun protection (62.2%) Conclusion. There is a risk of deficiency in most medical students due to a lack of Vitamin D intake and the use of sun protection.

Abstract

Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are risk factors for chronic kidney disease. A person diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes mellitus is required to regularly take medication for life, which can lead to side effects of drugs (ESO). This triggers the search for more effective and safer drugs, so many people start to turn to traditional medicine. The main objective of this community service is to increase community knowledge and skills through assistance in cultivating herbal plants such as Sambiloto, Celery, and Ginger. The method of service carried out in this activity is by giving questionnaires before and after the delivery of material with the community in the working area of the Gandus Palembang Health Center. The targets of community service activities are hypertension and diabetes mellitus patients and the community registered in the working area of the Gandus Palembang Health Center as many as 30 participants. The results of the counseling showed that there was an increase in the results of participants who fell into the good category, according to the variables of knowledge, attitude and action respectively 56.7%, 23.3% and 40%.

Abstract

Diarrhea is a condition of changing bowel movements accompanied by an increase in the frequency of diarrhea. Currently, the incidence and death cases due to diarrhea in Indonesia are still very high and need special attention, especially for clinicians. The conditions of diarrhea and stunting are related to each other. Prolonged diarrhea will cause stunting, while children with stunting will easily experience diarrhea. Therefore, further understanding is needed as a reference in managing diarrhea. Literature searches were obtained from various online portals such as Medscape, Pubmed, google scholar, and science direct using the keywords “diarrhea” “children” and “stunting”. Management diarrhea is mainly by rehydration, micronutrients (vitamin A, folic acid, iron, vitamin B12, and zinc), probiotics, antisecretory, and antibiotics. A comprehensive therapeutic approach is needed to avoid diarrhea complications as well as treatment options specifically for cases of diarrhea in children with stunting.

Abstract

Over time, the use of herbal medicines has increased rapidly. This is influenced by several main factors, including the relatively cheap price and avoiding concerns about the side effects of chemical drugs. In practice, screening tests need to be carried out on a drug product that will be marketed, one of which is through a toxicity test. The use of animal models as experimental materials provides invaluable information in many aspects of pathophysiology, treatment, and diagnosis of human disease. Without exception, research on traditional ingredients also relies heavily on animals in in vivo, in situ, and in vitro experiments. This study uses a literature review with a descriptive approach based on secondary literature derived from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct. Research conducted on animals regarding herbal medicine can provide valuable insights into a herbal remedy. Selecting the appropriate animal for a study is crucial to obtain scientifically convincing results. Animals used for pharmacological studies should be standard species. Rodents, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, and dogs are often used in traditional herbal medicine research. Moreover, herbal materials used for pharmacological research should be standardized to control quality and ensure the reproducibility of experimental outcomes. The standardization of herbal medicine should encompass species identification (name, origin, description, and purity), extraction procedures, chemical analysis of major and bioactive compounds, heavy metals, pesticides, and storage stability.
