Abstract

Nannochloropsis sp., an unicellular marine microalgae, has potential function as a food source for fish larvae and in chemical industry. Microenvironmental conditions, especially nitrogen and salinity stress in marine ecosystems, became major factor affecting the growth of Nannochloropsis sp.The aim of the experiment was to study effect of different salinities and nitrogen dosages to the growth and lipid contents of Nannochloropsis sp. cells. The experiment was arranged in factorial with three replicates. The first factor was salinity (28 ppt and 38 ppt), and the second factor was nitrogen dosage (100% and 50%). Results of the experiments indicated that nitrogen starvation and high saline concentration affected cell density of Nannochloropsis sp. in different level. The results showed that combination treatments of nitrogen starvation and salinity reduced cell density (treatmant A, B, and D), except in treatment C. Combination of high salinity and high N dosages resulted ini steady growth of Nannochloropsis sp. These results suggest that Nannochloropsis sp. are able to overcome salinity stress (38 ppt) in the presence of optimum concentration of nitrogen in the growth cultures. The results also shows that there were no significant differences of crude lipid content between treatments and no correlation between population density and crude lipid content. These results suggest that no simple correlation between population density and crude lipid concentration. On the other hand, population density was not the only factor affected crude lipid concentration in the microalgae cell.Keyword: Nannochloropsis, population, crude lipid

Abstract

Abstract

Biodiesel is derived from natural fats such as vegetable or animal oils. This study uses a type of microalgae that can produce products and has the potential as biodiesel fuel, namely Nannochloropsis sp. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of osmotic shock on the oil yield of Nannochloropsis sp. to determine the optimum osmotic shock, and to determine the composition of fatty acid content in the microalgae Nanochloropsis sp. in both wet and dry conditions. The extraction process in this study used five variations of osmotic shock, namely 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 atm. The results showed that osmotic shock had an effect on both oil yields of Nannochloropsis sp. both in wet conditions (R=0.890 Sig<0.043) and Nannochloropsis sp. dry conditions (R=0.916 Sig<0.029). So that the higher the osmotic shock applied, the higher the yield of Nannochloropsis sp. wet and oil yield of Nannochloropsis sp. dry. then the osmotic stress of 120atm is good for extracting the oil of Nannochloropsis sp. Each result obtained is Nannochloropsis sp. wet atm 120 atm (3.96 %) and for Nannochloropsis sp. dry 120 atm (2.60 %). Results of GC Chromatogram analysis on oil yield of Nannochloropsis sp. 13 fatty acids were found including saturated fat: octanoate (C8:0), laurate (C12:0), tetradecanoate (C14:0), heptadecanoate (C17:0), arachidate (C20:0), heneicosanoate (C21:0), tricosanoate (C23:0), lignocerate (C24:0) dan lemak tak jenuh palmitoleate (C16:1), oleic (C18:1), linolelaidic (C18:2), nervonate (C24:1), dan docosahexaenoate (C22:6).

Abstract

Inorganic nitrogen potential sources such as hatcheries/ponds, residential areas, and estuaries may affect loading capacity of n-inorganic in bay and strait waters. The concentration distributions of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in the bay and strait waters may have different values. The study aims was to analyze the horizontal distribution and suitability of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentrations with quality standard, and to analize the intercorrelation between the concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate with non nitrogen physical and chemical parameters in Kalianda waters and Anyer-Panimbang waters. The study was carried out in specific location of Kalianda and Anyer-Panimbang waters in September and October 2022. The concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate were analyzed for their concentration distributions and analyzed using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method. The results showed that the horizontal distribution of ammonia concentrations was dominated by location of estuary in Kalianda waters, the horizontal distribution of nitrite concentrations was dominated by location near hatchery or pond in Kalianda waters and Anyer-Panimbang waters, and the horizontal distribution of nitrate concentrations was dominated by location near residential area in Anyer-Panimbang waters. Most of ammonia and nitrite concentrations in Kalianda waters and Anyer-Panimbang waters were below of quality standards, except for nitrite concentration at Sambolo Beach in Anyer-Panimbang waters which exceed the quality standard, and all nitrate concentrations in Kalianda waters and Anyer-Panimbang waters above the quality standard. The intercorrelation between the concentrations of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate were positively correlated with water temperature, but those have negative correlated with DO and salinity.

Abstract

Graphical Abstract Highlight Research 226Ra and 232Th were determined in sediments and seawater of Cirebon waters. The activity of natural radionuclides varies in Cirebon waters. Natural radioactivity in sediment is relatively higher than in seawater. Natural radioactivity in sediment and seawater is comparable to other regions' levels.   Abstract 226Ra and 232Th are natural radionuclides with long half-lives, and they have a dangerous radiation exposure effect on marine biota and even humankind. This study investigates the activity concentration and horizontal distribution of natural radionuclides 226Ra and 232Th in sediments and seawater from the coastal waters of Cirebon, Indonesia, directly adjacent to the Cirebon Coal-Fired Power Station (CFPS). The activity concentrations of 226Ra and 232Th radioactivity were measured using gamma-ray spectrometry. Radioactivity analysis of 226Ra and 232Th was conducted on sediment and seawater columns. Furthermore, Ocean Data View (ODV) version 5.8.2 software was used to analyse the horizontal distribution pattern. The results showed that the highest concentrations of 226Ra and 232Th radioactivity were found in the sediment rather than the water column, even though they varied by location. The concentration activity of 226Ra and 232Th radioactivity was found to be a linear function of distance from the potential pollution source. Higher activity was detected at stations closer to the pollution source (CFPS). There was no significant effect of the depth of radionuclide distribution. Further monitoring activities at Cirebon’s CFPS should be conducted to predict and manage the impact on biota and human life.

Abstract

Lampung is one of national marine tourism destination. Seagrass is one of fragile coastal ecosystem and it is a habitat and feeding ground for a number of Echinoderms species.  Echinodermata are nutrient recyclers that will in turn provide benefits to the seagrass ecosystem. This research aimed to assess the community structure of Echinoderms and seagrass as well as the relationship between Echinoderms abundance, seagrass densities, and water quality in Mahitam Island and Ketapang Beach. Observations were conducted at 7 stations, namely 3 stations on Ketapang Beach and 4 stations on Mahitam Island. Observations included the type and number of echinoderms, as well as the type, number of individuals, and number of seagrasses stands. Habitat quality that was observed were included water quality such as temperature, salinity, pH, DO (dissolved oxygen), current speed, brightness, and TOM (total organic matter) and also observed substrate type at each station. The result elucidated nine species of echinoderms and 4 species of seagrasses were found in both study sites. The average value of Echinoderms diversity index in Mahitam Island and Ketapang Beach was low. The uniformity index of Echinoderms in Mahitam Island was medium and Ketapang Beach was low. The dominance index of Echinoderms on Mahitam Island was categorized as low and Ketapang Beach was considered high. There was a domination of an Echinoderms species in some stations. The association between Echinoderms abundance, seagrass density and habitat quality in both locations showed a positive relationship and was influenced by the habitat quality parameters of seagrasses.
