Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to identify and describe the types of metaphor used by journalist on COVID-19 issues in English newspaper and to find the dominant type of metaphor. This is a qualitative research with analysis method. The newspaper were used on this research are The Jakarta Post and China Daily. The newspaper during October 2020 were used and analyzed on COVID-9 issues only. There were 38 collected data from both newspapers. Structural metaphor appears 15 times, orientational metaphor appears 12 times, and ontological metaphor appears 11 times. Based on the research findings, it can be conclude that structural metaphor is the dominant type of metaphor that journalist used to write the news and their opinion in COVID-19 issues. It is suggested to the next researchers who are interested in metaphor need to more deepen analysis because news and data keep changing through times so that it can provide new results.Key Words: Metaphor, Metaphor in Newspaper, English Newspaper.

Abstract

Abstract : The objective of this research was to find out the reading comprehension ability on report texts of the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. This is a descriptive research with only one variable. The data were collected from April to August 2018 by administering a test to the students in the form of multiple choice . The population of this research is the second year students of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Pekanbaru. The sample was XI TKJ 2 (36 students) chosen by using cluster random sampling techniques. The findings of the research are as the following: finding main ideas (73.3), finding factual information (78.9), finding the meaning of vocabulary in context (82.2), finding reference (78.3), finding inference (78.9) and finding social function (80.6). As a conclusion, the highest score was in finding the meaning of vocabulary in context (82.2) which categorized into excellent level while the lowest score was in finding main ideas (73.3) which categorized into good level. Therefore, the writer recommended the students to improve their reading skills in order to get deep understanding of report texts and could reach excellent level.Key Words: Reading Comprehension, Ability, Report Text

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Word Cluster teaching technique on the ability of the second students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Lesung in comprehending descriptive texts. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 3 classes in the second year. Class VIII B in the second semester of academic year 2018/2019 that consist of 30 students are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of the test is in the form of multiple choices which consist of 40 items about descriptive texts. To collect the needed data the treatments were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 57.50 and the mean score of the post-test is 63.41. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (3.088>2.045). The alternative hypothesis (HI) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of Word Cluster teaching technique on the reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Pangkalan Lesung. The implication of this finding is beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching reading.Key Words: Effect, Word Cluster, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This research was aimed at finding out the ability of using question tags by the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The population of this research was the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Univeristas Riau. The number of the sample was 37 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice test items with 50 questions. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of ability: very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. The finding of this study tells that there are 12 students (32,43%) are in excellent level, 21 students (56,75%) are good in level, 3 students (8,10%)are in mediocre level and 1 student (2,70%) is in poor level. Based on the finding of the research, it was found that the students’ ability of using question tags by the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau was in good level with the mean score was 72. The implication of this research is that the second semester students of English Study Program FKIP Univeritas Riau have a good ability in using question tags.Key Words: Students’ ability, Study, Question Tags

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to examine the speech act functions found in the Dune film. To actualise this aims, this study was conducted using qualitative research designs and by making the speech act theory of (Levinson, 1979) and the speech act function theory of Searle (1979) as the basis for examining the speech act functions. The data were collected using the open coding and documentation method in which the oral data were collected from the utterances of the film, then transcribed into written data. This research used content or document analysis as the way to analyze the data. The data analysis result are presented informally or descriptively. The results of data analysis showed there are five speech act functions in the film, namely representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The result finding shows that the speech function representative is at 57%, directive 20%, expressive 12%, declarative 7%, and commissive is at 4%. Examining the function and meaning of speech acts in the film Dune from the perspective of sociolinguistics is an important topic to raise as a method in language learning.Key Words: Function of Speech, Speech Act, Dune Film

Abstract

Abstract: The research design of this study was descriptive research that focused on quantitative approach. The objective of this study was to find out the level of students’ ability in writing descriptive text at the first-year students of international class of MAN 2 Kota Pekanbaru. The students’ writing ability was analyzed according to the analytic scoring rubric by Brown (2007). The sample of this study was selected by using the total sampling technique, which 34 students of X MIPA 6, as known as international class. The writer used a written test as the primary data. The collected data were analyzed by the three raters. The findings of this study revealed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text can be categorized as a very good level with the average score of 86.45. Based on the result of the students’ ability in each writing aspect, the highest score was in the content aspect (92.4) while the lowest score was in the mechanics aspect (79.41).Key Words: Study, Writing Ability, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study is about the use of idiom in a novel entitled Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children.The aim of this study is to find out whether or not idioms are found in the novel, the type of idiom based on McCarthy and O’Dell‟s theory (2010), and the meanings of idioms found in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. The object of the study was the English idiom in the novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. The data were the phrases or words found in the novel. The data was collected in a particular way called a data collection method. The researcher collected the data by utilizing purposive sampling or judgment sampling. The theory that the researcher used for the data analysis is by Creswell (2009) and the categorizations using McCarthy and O'Dell (2010) theory. First, the data were identified to prove whether or not there were idioms. Second, the data were classified based on the types of idiom by McCarthy and O'Dell (2010). Third, the data were counted to get the percentage of each type of idioms. Then, the data were analyzed to understand the meaning of the collected data. Based on data analysis, there were found 63 idioms in the novel. Based on the analysis of the sentence in the novel, from 63 were classified into 7 types of idiom offered by McCarthy and O’Dell used. The researcher found there were 32 data of simile with 50,7% percentage, 7 data of cliché with 11,1% percentage, 10 data of fixed statement with 15,8% percentage, 4 data of euphemism 6,3% percentage, 6 Data of binomial with 9,5% percentage, 1 data of trinomial with 1,6% percentage, and 3 data of other languages with 4,7% percentage.Key Words: Idiom, Novel

Abstract

Abstract: Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique is one of the techniques used to teach reading and writing, however the researcher only focus on reading comprehension. The research aimed at finding out whether there is a significant effect of using CIRC technique on the ability of the first year students in comprehending descriptive texts. 37 students of SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru were chosen as the sample of the research using cluster random sampling. The results of the research showed that there is a significant effect of CIRC technique on the ability of the first year students of SMK Taruna Satria Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. Based on the result, teacher can use CIRC technique to reading because this technique has proven to increase students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. Based on the results of the researcher, students are resumen to increase their ability level not only by doing exercise given by their teacher but also by doing them from the books.Key Words: Reading Comprehension, CIRC Technique, Descriptive Texts.

Abstract: The term "code-mixing" is used in research of bilingual language acquisition to describe a developmental stage in which children mix vocabulary from different languages. That, the objective of the research is to learn what the students think about using code-mixing in the process of teaching, and based on the final result, it seems that the objective has been achieved. his research was designed using a descriptive- quantitative methodology, They found that code-mixing has positive effects on them. They thought that using code-mixing helped them save time in finding the words to use in a conversation. Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed at finding out whether there is the effect of intensive reading on vocabulary mastery of SMAN 2 Tapung Students. This research used a sequential explanatory mixed method combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The sample of this research is 30 students of XI IPS 1 class. The research data were collected through Pre-test and Post-test as the research instrument. The test items consist of synonyms and antonyms. The result revealed that the posttest mean score was higher than the mean score of the pretest. Additionally, the result of hypothesis analysis showed that the significance 2-tailed was lower than the alpha that was 0.000 ≤ 0.050. It indicated that Ho (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and Ha (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. Briefly, in all the explanations above there was a significant effect of intensive reading on vocabulary mastery of SMAN 2 Tapung Students.Key Words: Intensive Reading and Vocabulary Mastery
