Abstract

Predictions and illustrations of life in the future are often integrated in works of science fiction, which could not be immediately proven yet possibly fascinating when looked back on several decades later or at the times predicted in the works. Science fiction authors foretell such events by borrowing theories, concepts, or simply terms used by scientists. Those theories, concepts, and terms can be written in scientific journals or in more popular media. American science fiction works, for instance, illustrate the future by their adaptation in the forms of more popular media such as movies, video games, and the works categorized as the subgenres of cyber literature. All of them are discussed in this paper from the lens of New Historicism, which believes in equality between literary and non-literary texts in viewing phenomena that exist in society, one of which is the relationship between science fiction works, their writers, their readers, and society. Technology is seen as a product of society, so it becomes broadly part of culture. Meanwhile, emerging technology is sometimes coincidental and random, so it can also be seen that technology determines people’s movements and lifestyles. This study contributes to ongoing discussions on the ethical and societal implications of speculative narratives by highlighting the interconnectedness between literature, science, technology, and society.

Abstract

This research analyzes the cat in Coraline as a character with moral ambiguity in children’s literature. This study used new criticism theory, focusing on the formal elements which are the plot of the story and the cat’s character and its characterization to analyze the cat’s role and its significance towards Coraline. By applying Janet Burroway’s character presentation methods, this research aims to analyze how the cat with moral ambiguity influenced Coraline in deciding her decisions and choice. This research also discusses the relationship between the cat with Coraline in order to know how deep Coraline’s trust towards the cat to know the significance of a character with moral ambiguity and to investigate the cat’s role in the novel by analyzing the plot of the story. The result shows that even though the cat has a bad and annoying attitudes towards Coraline, after she met the cat and having several conversations, there is a change in her mind about the point of view of the Other World so she could decide what to do in order to save not only herself but also the cat, her parents and the ghost children’s souls from the Beldam. The existence of a character with moral ambiguity is unusual in children’s literature which mostly have obvious narratives about polarity; nevertheless, the cat’s presence in Coraline has a significant role because not only guiding Coraline but also an illustration of not every people with bad attitude is an evil people; even though the cat has moral ambiguity in its character it accommodated Coraline in escaping from the Beldam.

Abstract

This research explores the character complexities of Mathilda as a tragic heroine, the main character in Mary Shelley's Mathilda, from the beginning until the end of the story. To achieve the aim of this research, the researchers use data collection and the novella Mathilda to analyze Mathilda's character. The approach for this research is psychoanalytic, theory of character and characterization, personality, and psychological process. The analysis shows that Mathilda is a complex tragic heroine who yearns for both affection and tragic death. Her experiences of unrequited parental affection and emotional turmoil contribute to her portrayal as a tragic character. However, her longing for her idealized tragic fate remains unfulfilled, adding complexity to her character. Despite her desires, she cannot obtain the tragic ending she seeks, further highlighting the tragic irony of her situation. Mathilda's portrayal as a tragic character highlights the depths of her desires and yearning and the complexities of her character.

Abstract

This study searches out, observes, and analyzes the elements of folklore in the children’s book series by two authors with different cultural backgrounds: Indonesian background and American background. For the analysis of the Indonesian author’s works, this study chooses the adventure series of a child named Matara, a.k.a. Mata, written by Okky Madasari, an Indonesian writer who was previously known as a writer of literary works that are quite idealistic. From her Mata adventure series, this research discusses three works, namely the series Mata Di Tanah Melus (2018), Mata dan Rahasia Pulau Gapi (2019), and Mata dan Manusia Laut (2019). For the work of the American writer, this study selects Daniel Pinkwater’s children’s book, Beautiful Yetta: The Yiddish Chicken (2010). All the works discussed in this paper are works of 21st-century children’s literature, the results of which are expected to provide new insights into the repertoire of children’s literature studies, especially those related to Indonesian and American children’s literature. The study of these works found that the forms of elements of culture and folklore can be used to convey social criticism to certain parties. In this case, there is society and authority. Above all, this study underlines that there are distinct presentations of those criticisms that utilize myths, folklore, and cultural symbols by Indonesian and American children’s book authors.

Abstract

This Community Service program is intended as one of assistance service programs for people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has created major impacts on the pattern of people's lives in practically all aspects and levels of society, including the youth organizations in rural areas. This program focuses on facilitating activities which can maintain productivity and enthusiasm of the youths during the pandemic/ post-pandemic situation. Some of the initial inputs and data of the youth group targeted for the activity, namely the youth organization Tunas Harapan Ngentakrejo, were obtained during the observation period which was then followed up for realization of the program. All of the activities in the program are carried out online or remotely, with internet communication media, by utilizing common communication technology devices, applications and software. This activity, conducted from July 2020 to mid-October 2020, has resulted in a collaborative video output featuring artistic activities produced youth organizations Tunas Harapan Ngentakrejo. ===== Program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini ditujukan sebagai salah satu bentuk program pendampingan bagi masyarakat yang terdampak pandemi Covid-19 yang merupakan sebuah peristiwa yang berdampak besar bagi pola kehidupan masyarakat hampir di semua aspek dan lapisan masyarakat, tak terkecuali generasi muda di pedesaan, agar nantinya dapat menjaga produktifitas dan semangat mereka dalam berkarya. Beberapa masukan awal dari kelompok pemuda sasaran kegiatan yakni pemuda karang taruna Tunas Harapan Ngentakrejo telah diperoleh pada masa observasi yang selanjutnya ditindaklanjuti sehingga terwujud program kegiatan ini. Keseluruhan kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan cara online atau jarak jauh, menggunakan media komunikasi via internet memanfaatkan perangkat-perangkat teknologi komunikasi serta beberapa software yang dapat digunakan untuk produksi karya bersama. Kegiatan yang dimulai sejak bulan Juli 2020 ini telah selesai dilaksanakan pada pertengahan bulan Oktober 2020, dan mengasilkan luaran berupa hasil video kolaboratif yang menampilkan kegiatan kesenian dari para pemuda karang taruna Tunas Harapan.

Abstract

This paper is written based on the community service program conducted in April-September 2021, as the continuation of a similar program carried out the year before. As the previous program, this program is intended as a form of assistance program for people affected by pandemic and post-pandemic situations. Some initial input and data from the youth target group, namely Tunas Harapan Ngentakrejo youth groups, was obtained during the observation period which was then followed up so that this program of activities was realized. All of these activities were carried out online or remotely, using internet communication media, utilizing communication technology devices, computer and mobile software that can be used for the production of joint projects. The outputs of this program, along with this publication, are social media contents uploaded on the youth groups’ Youtube and Instagram accounts. During the process, the youths had practiced several skills, which they learned in this program combined with their prior knowledge, such as phone photography and videography, photo and video editing, and digital arts. ==== Artikel ini ditulis berdasarkan program pengabdian masyarakat yang dilakukan pada April-September 2021 sebagai kelanjutan dari program serupa yang dilakukan pada tahun sebelumnya. Seperti program sebelumnya, program ini dimaksudkan sebagai bentuk program pendampingan bagi masyarakat yang terdampak situasi pandemi dan pascapandemi. Beberapa data dan masukan awal dari kelompok karang taruna yang menjadi target sasaran adalah karang taruna Tunas Harapan Ngentakrejo telah didapatkan selama masa observasi yang kemudian ditindaklanjuti sehingga dapat mewujudkan program kegiatan ini. Semua kegiatan tersebut dilakukan secara daring atau jarak jauh menggunakan media komunikasi melalui internet, memanfaatkan perangkat teknologi komunikasi dan beberapa perangkat lunak yang dapat digunakan untuk produksi karya bersama. Luaran dari program ini, bersama dengan publikasi ini, adalah konten media sosial yang diunggah di akun YouTube dan Instagram kelompok pemuda sasaran. Selama proses tersebut, para pemuda telah mempraktikkan beberapa keterampilan yang mereka pelajari dalam program ini dikombinasikan dengan pengetahuan mereka sebelumnya, seperti fotografi dan videografi melalui gawai, editing foto dan video, serta seni rupa dan desain digital.
