Abstract

Base materials of removable partial denture are usually from acrylic and thermoplastic nylon resin. Both of materials have advantages and disadvantages. Acrylic resin properties have good esthetic, the color like gum, cheap, and easy to repair it. The disadvantage is easy to porous. Thermoplastic nylon resin is flexible material, not use retention wire, thinner, more translucent, has goo esthetic, and difficult to be broken. Disadvantages of this resin are easy to be shrinkage, to absorp water and dimensional changes. One of effort to clean denture is by soaking in some liquid for 6 – 8 hours. Denture always contacts with saliva or drinking water. Aim of this study is to know the different of denture base color stability of acrylic and thermoplastic nylon resin toward liquid absorption. Samples were acrylic and thermoplastic nylon resin in and soaked in aquadest for 7 days. The control is sampels before soaked in aquadest. Color stability was tested densitometer. The result showed there was significant different color stability between acrylic and thermoplastic nylon resin that before and after soaking in aquadest for 7 days. The conclussion is thermoplastic nylon resin absorpt liquid more than acrilyc resin and it made color changing.

This characteristic can lead to polymer degradation and a reduction in impact strength. Dentures are cleaned to mitigate the accumulation of microorganisms and to manage denture stomatitis. The cleaning process involves utilizing an electric toothbrush and a cleaning paste derived from Nicotiana tabacum L. (tobacco). The cleaning paste comprises natural ingredients, specifically tobacco leaves, which exhibit antibacterial and antifungal properties due to their phenol, alkaloid, saponin, and essential oil content. This study aimed to assess the impact of using tobacco leaf paste as a cleaning agent for dentures on the impact strength of thermoplastic nylon. Methods: This is a type of laboratory experimental research employing a post-only group design. The samples, measuring 65x10x2.5 mm, were categorized into three groups: the control group without brushing, group A, which involved brushing thermoplastic nylon with 50% tobacco leaf paste, and group B with 75% tobacco leaf paste. Brushing was carried out for 730 minutes, equivalent to 2 years of cleaning, after which the samples were subjected to impact strength testing. Results: The One-way ANOVA test indicated significant differences within each group, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). The LSD test demonstrated a significant difference between the control and treatment groups, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conversely, the groups using 50% and 75% tobacco leaf paste did not exhibit a significant difference, with a p-value of 0.411. Conclusion: Tobacco leaf paste with concentrations of 50% and 75%, when used as a denture cleaner, decreases the impact strength of thermoplastic nylon. Keywords Nylon thermoplastic, tobacco leaf paste, impact strength

Abstract

Thermoplastic nylon as a denture base requires mechanical cleaning with denture paste. Previous research showed that tobacco leaf extract paste (TLEP) 25% was fungistatic on thermoplastic nylon denture bases. The aim is to evaluate the roughness and colour changes of thermoplastic nylon against tobacco leaf extract paste 25% during one year of simulated use. This research hypothesizes that thermoplastic nylon's roughness and colour value will decrease further after brushing using 25% TLEP. Sample groups include brushing without paste, paste without TLEP 25% and TLEP 25%. The sample size for each group was 15 samples; measurements use a surface roughness tester and a colour reader. Brushing was carried out for 23.5 minutes on a plate measuring 60x10x2.5 mm as a surface roughness test and 3.90 minutes on a plate measuring 10x10x2.5 mm as a colour change test. The sample size for each group was 15 samples; measurements use a surface roughness tester and a colour reader. The research results were tested using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Levene and One-way ANOVA with a significance level of 0.05. There were no differences in surface roughness and colour changes on thermoplastic nylon plates after brushing with 25% TLEP (p0.05). This study concluded that 25% TLEP did not affect increasing surface roughness and changing the colour of thermoplastic nylon plates with values below the threshold.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Mangosteen peel extract can be used as a denture cleaning agent to effectively inhibit the growth of C. albicans because mangosteen peel contains various compounds such as mangostin, tannins, flavonoids, saponins. Denture cleaning materials that will be used in the dental field must meet biocompatibility requirements, one of which is a toxicity test. The aim of this study was to analyze the toxicity of mangosteen peel extract as a cleaner of heat cured acrylic resin denture on BHK-21 as cell culture of fibroblast cells. Methods: Toxicity test used the MTT assay method. Acrylic resin samples had a diameter of 3 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The acrylic resin was soaked for 4 days, equivalent to soaking 15 minutes per day for 1 year in mangosteen peel extract with concentrations of 50, 60, 70%, and sodium hypochlorite. Analyzed data using normality and homogeneity test results showed (p<0.05). Kruskal Wallis test results (0.000<0.05) and Mann Whitney (0.000<0.05). Results: The greatest cell viability value was shown in mangosteen peel extract with a concentration of 50%, namely 97.16939%. Based on research data, it can be said that the lower the concentration of mangosteen peel extract, the lower the level of toxicity of a denture cleanser agent. Mangosteen peel extract in concentrations of 60, 70%, and sodium hypochlorite are toxic when used as a denture cleanser. Conclusion: Mangosteen peel extract with a concentration of 50% is not toxic to BHK-21 fibroblast cells as cell culture of and as a cleaner of heat cured acrylic resin denture on.Keywordheat-cured acrylic resin, mangosteen peel extract, MTT assay.
