Abstract

Abstract

The spread of Western culture and technological advancement has led to a moral and character crisis in society, impacting social and cultural life. Collaborative efforts among families, schools, and communities are necessary to counteract these negative influences. One potential approach is preserving traditions containing positive values, such as the Perang Timbung tradition in Pejanggik Village. This qualitative study with descriptive-analytic methods aimed to examine Islamic educational values in the Perang Timbung tradition and its relevance in strengthening community character. Data sources included community members, including community leaders, religious figures, and the Perang Timbung tradition organizers, as well as library resources comprising books and scientific literature. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation, with data analysis involving reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Research findings revealed that the Perang Timbung tradition contains Islamic educational values, specifically worship values, gratitude values, mutual cooperation values, and deliberation values. These values play a crucial role in forming positive character and strengthening community faith and solidarity.

Abstract

Indonesia, as a diverse society, has the potential for conflict if that diversity is not managed with a strong commitment to tolerance. This study aims to describe tolerance education strategies based on local wisdom and analyze the supporting and inhibiting factors in urban communities in the Karang Bata Utara environment, Mataram City. The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, with informants consisting of community leaders, religious figures, traditional leaders, youth, and local residents. The results show that tolerance education primarily occurs not through formal institutions but through social processes in daily life. Three main strategies were identified: role modeling by community leaders, the use of public spaces as social learning media, and the involvement of youth in social-religious activities. Local wisdom practices such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), deliberation (musyawarah), helping each other (ngejot), and attending condolences (melayat) serve as concrete means to instill tolerant values. The success of these strategies is supported by strong local values, active roles of community leaders, the intensity of social interactions, and youth involvement. However, there are also inhibiting factors such as exclusive attitudes, family environment influences, low digital literacy, alcohol consumption, and the dynamics of interfaith marriages. This research emphasizes that local wisdom serves not only as cultural heritage but also as an educational mechanism for shaping and maintaining tolerance in urban communities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the strategies employed by Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers to foster religious tolerance at SMP Negeri 1 Ndona, Ende Regency, while identifying the supporting and inhibiting factors of implementation. A qualitative phenomenological method was applied to gain deep understanding of participants’ experiences and perspectives. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving PAI teachers, the school principal, Catholic religious education teachers, Muslim and non-Muslim students. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Saldanak (2014) through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with source and methodological triangulation to ensure validity. Results indicate that PAI teachers employ three key strategies: (1) integrating tolerance values into formal instruction through dialogic and contextual learning, (2) serving as role models by demonstrating inclusive conduct in daily school interactions, and (3) providing personal guidance outside class hours to address students’ social attitudes. Supporting factors include adequate facilities and inclusive school policies, while inhibiting factors include students’ exclusive home environments and limited understanding of religious diversity. This study concludes that the cultivation of religious tolerance requires a holistic, integrated approach combining instructional strategies, exemplary modeling, and sustained personal guidance, and that long-term effectiveness depends on consistent collaboration among schools, families, and the broader community. These findings contribute to the development of PAI-based tolerance education models applicable in religiously diverse public school contexts.
