Abstract

Phytoplankton plays an important role in primary productivity in marine environment. Various environmental changes in coastal area will impact the water quality and their phytoplankton compositions. The purpose of this study is to examine the abundance of phytoplankton from two different sites, i.e Tanah Merah (close to mining site) and Semujur Island (away from mining site) in Bangka Island. Phytoplankton and water sample were collected on June- August 2018. Water quality was measured using water quality checker, whereas the phytoplankton was identified under the microscope with a magnification of 100x. Non-parametric Kruskal test and T-test analysis was performed to determine the abundance, diversity, uniform, and dominance of phytoplankton between Sites, respectively. Statistical analyses showed the abundance of phytoplankton at Semujur Island was significantly higher than that at Tanah Merah (p = 0.003). In additions the diversity, uniform, and dominance were also significantly different between sites (all p <0.05). In Semujur Island, Diatoms (Thalassiothrix, Chaetoceros and Thalassionema) were more dominants than the Dinophyceae group. However, in Tanah Merah, the genera Ceratium belong to class Dinophyceae was more dominant than the class Bacillariophyceae. These results performed that the phytoplankton in Tanah Merah and Semujur Island was affected by environment, in this case the mining area. The water quality in Semujur Island (non-mining Area) might have good quality than in Tanah Merah (mining area). The average value of turbidity and Total Suspended Solid in Tanah Merah Waters causes low abundance of phytoplankton. It can be concluded that tin mining can disrupt the abundance and composition of phytoplankton as a primary producer of waters.

Abstract

Abstract

The consequences of tin mining activities is the formation large basin-shaped holes filled with water in which the local (Bangka Belitung islands) term is a Kolong or Camuy (lake). Heavy metal concentrations are still high in all the pits and endangering human health; is the image that is in today's society so that people refused to eat the fish from or doing aquaculture activities in kolong.Pb heavy metal in the jambal catfish start found in the second month, the month of December 2011 on the kidney and meat measured 0,032 mg/kg and 0,177 mg/kg, respectively. In the third month (January 2012) Pb was found in almost every organ of jambal above safe levels for consumption, ie 15,39mg/kg in liver, and 40,56 mg/kg in the flesh.Decrease in water temperature and pH also resulted in an increase of Pb accumulation in the meats of jambal catfish, which amounted to 40,56mg/kg. During the four months of cultivation, the accumulation of heavy metals Pb that occur in every organ of observation had a significant influence to the growth rate of jambal catfish. Accumulation of Pb in each jambal catfish organs in the first and second months of cultivation is almost immeasurable but still lowering the rate of growth since the first month. The jambal catfish body already polluted with the heavy metals, as evidenced by Pb measured in the meats and kidney in the second month of cultivation.

Abstract

The existence of Wild Betta fish in Belitung Island needs to be studied. This study aims to analyze the differences in the morphology of two species of Wild Betta fish from Belitung Island based on the morphometric characteristics and habitat of these fish. The method used in this research is quantitative descriptive. This research was conducted in freshwater located in Dukong Village, Simpang Pesak District, East Belitung Regency from May to June 2020. The fish samples obtained were 35 fish consisting of 20 Betta uberis fish and 15 Betta edithae fish. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively and presented in graphs or tables. The results showed that the comparison of the morphometric ratio patterns found in the two Wild Betta fish species differed specifically from several characters, including Total Length (PT), Body Length (PB), Tail Length (PE), and Head Height (TK). Meanwhile, based on the ratio of morphometric characters, there are 3 main characteristics, namely: 1) Tail Length (PE) (1.249); 2) Head Length (PK) (0.869); 3) Width Body I (LB-I) (1,126); 4) Head Length (PK) (0.816); 5) Body Width II (LB-II) (0.337); and 6) Body Length (PB) (0.436). The habitat of Wild Betta fish from Belitung Island generally inhabits peat waters with fairly low pH conditions, ranging from 4-5 with the color of the waters that tend to be black to brownish.
