Abstract

The use of technology during the current pandemic facilitates the process of online teaching and learning activities. One of the digital applications that can support learning English is Khan Academy. Khan Academy offers educational videos and exercises in various contents. The application helps educators and students to meet the educational challenges faced in the current pandemic conditions. The use of Khan Academy has been implemented in many developing countries including Indonesia. The purpose of this Community Service activity is to find out the effect of using the Khan Academy application on learning English and inculcating good values in students. In the activity, the writers focus one to see the development of children character building and increase motivation to learn English. It was held at TBM Sanggar Baca Jendela Dunia Ciputat. The descriptive qualitative was applied to explore the results. It has two aspects of outcomes: using digital applications, children are expected to achieve reinforcement to improve English language skills, and children at Sanggar Baca Jendela Dunia are expected to obtain the positive development of character buildings which are enthusiasm, independence, and thoroughness in the English learning process. The use of this application is expected to have a lot of positive impacts for students to support academic and non- academic achievements, as well as in daily activities.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris siswa, khususnya dalam bidang public speaking berpidato dalam Bahasa Inggris (speech) masih rendah. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menghasilkan bahan ajar berupa buku dan video untuk mendukung proses pembelajaran berpidato dalam bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengetahui pengaruh positif dari kedua bahan ajar dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa khusunya berpidato. Penulis menggunakan bahan ajar berbentuk buku dan video pembelajaran pidato dalam Bahasa Inggris untuk mengetahui pengaruh positif bahan ajar tersebut terhadap meningkatnya kemampuan berpidato. Kegiatan melibatkan seluruh siswa di tingkat Madrasah Aliyah di Pondok Pesantren Nurul Quran, Bogor. Hasil kegiatan PkM, dapat disimpulkan bahwa modeling strategy melalui buku ajar dan video pembelajaran dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbahasa inggris, khususnya kemahiran public speaking dalam berpidato Bahasa Inggris (speech), siswa dapat mengaplikasikan kemampuan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris dalam kehidupannya sehari-hari secara berterima dan efektif, dan siswa mendapatkan penguatan dalam membangun dan meningkatkan rasa percaya diri yang merupakan karakter penting untuk dimiliki. Karakter memiliki rasa percaya diri ini diharapkan dapat memberikan banyak dampak positif bagi para santri untuk menunjang prestasi akademik maupun non-akademik.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) bertujuan untuk mengimplementasikan salah satu dari Tri Dharma Penguruan Tinggi. Lebih jauh lagi, dengan melakukan kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini, kehadiran institusi perguruan tinggi dapat memberikan kontribusi yang bermanfaat terhadap perkembangan dan pengaplikasian ilmu pengetahuian. Oleh karena itu, salah satu tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat dari program studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang bermaksud untuk melakukan pengabdian kepada masyarakat kepada anak-anak di Taman Bacaan Masyarakat Kolong Jembatan Ciputat, yaitu sebuah organisasi yang kegiatannya memberikan perhatian terhadap pendidikan dan pengembangan masyarakat di wilayah Ciputat Tangerang Selatan, Banten. Berdasarkan fakta bahwa betapa tingginya polusi udara di wilayah Ciputat, tim bermaksud untuk melakukan penyuluhan terkait polusi udara melalui lagu dan dongeng. Dari hasil obeservasi, diperoleh bahwa anak-anak memberikan reaksi yang positif terhadap penggunaan lagu dan dongeng untuk meningkatkan kesadaran mereka terkait polusi udara. Selain itu, mereka juga memperkaya kosa kata Bahasa Inggris mereka melalui cerita yang dibawakan oleh para tutor.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat adalah salah satu unsur dalam Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang wajib dilaksanakan oleh setiap dosen pada tiap semesternya. Adanya tindakan perundungan, kurangnya rasa tenggang rasa dan perasaan saling mendukung di antara para remaja menjadi latar belakang utama dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada msyarakat ini. Artikel ini membahas kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang bertujuan meningkatkan kesadaran multikulturalisme di kalangan reamaja. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan oleh beberapa dosen dan mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang melalui pembuatan video dongeng dengan menggunakan stick puppets sebagai properti. hal ini ditujukan kepada tutor dan para peserta didik di Jampang English Village (JEV) Bogor. Melalui metode deskriptif analitis, data memperlihatkan beberapa pengaruh mendongeng terhadap keterampilan kognitif anak. Setelah menyaksikan video yang bersisi dongeng dengan menggunakan hand puppet, ditemukan adanya peningkatan keterampilan peserta dalam hal kerjasama, mendengarkan, pemerolehan bahasa, kreatifitas, imajinasi, dan kesadaran multikultural. Pengetahuan yang diperoleh melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat menciptakan semangat baru dalam meningkatkan motivasi dan menciptakan materi-materi terkait kesadaran multikultural, sebagai upaya mewujudkan situasi damai dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat.

Abstract

The application of digital tools has been used in educational institution including universities to strengthen the material delivery. They can be beneficial tools in COVID-19 pandemic condition as teachers' assistance. Due to these issues, this study was conducted to determine students' perspective on the implementation of screen recording video in virtual learning activities during Covid-19 pandemic. This study involved 50 participants of the sixth semester students of English department of Universitas Pamulang. To obtain the data, the writers distributed a questionnaire consisting 10 questions and interviewed 4 questions to the students related to the implementation of virtual learning in COVID-19 pandemic situation. The data analysis reveals that the students have top four positive responses of screen video recording in virtual learning: enhancing the quality of learning, helping students learn more effectively, enhancing students’ learning experience, students-teachers' engagement, and flexible time and place. They also find that teachers' assistance and guidance are still absolutely needed however beneficial screen recording video is.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the attitudes and beliefs of teachers regarding the use of L1 in EFL (English as a foreign language) and to describe the functions for which L1 was employed by the teachers. The participants of this study were 15 EFL teachers teaching at several schools in three provinces: Banten, West Java, and Jakarta (Indonesia). To collect data, the writer conducted Likert-scale survey and semi-structured interview to two teachers. The results showed that even though there were few of them were in doubt whether the use of L1 might negatively affect students’ English learning, their attitudes were positive toward the use of L1 in the English classroom. The results also indicated that the teachers employed L1 in the classrooms as a teaching tool and as part of classroom management to maximize the learning outcomes.

Abstract

Keragaman sosial dalam suatu masyarakat menciptakan keragaman bahasa. Dalam suku Jawa, terdapat kata ndalem, yang merrupakan respon ketika orang yang lebih muda dipanggil namanya oleh orang yang lebih tua atau yang kedudukannya lebih tinggi. Keragaman social atau stratifikasi sosial ini mempengaruhi pemilihan bahasa dalam tingkatan-tingkatan bahasa yang disebut undak-usuk. Banyak generasi muda khususnya Gen Z belum memperhatikan hal ini. Selain itu menduniakan budaya lokal dapat membantu bangsa ini diperhitungkan oleh dunia global. Oleh karena itu, melakukan promosi budaya lokal melalui pengenalan variasi bahasa dalam sosiolinguistik dirasa dapat menjadi salah satu solusi dari masalah yang ada. Untuk itu salah satu kelompok PkM program studi Sastra Inggris Fakultas Sastra Universitas Pamulang melakukan kegiatan webinar dengan judul “Promoting Local Culture through Language Variationss” yang bertujuan untuk mengenalkan budaya lokal pada generasi muda dan masyarakat global melalui variasi bahasa. Ini dilakukan dengan webinar via zoom. Hasilnya, peserta memberikan respon positif terhadap kegiatan ini dan mereka menjadi lebih sadar akan peran penting variasi bahasa dan sosiolinguistik dalam promosi budaya lokal.

Abstract

Writing subject is complex since it does not only have to focus on the organization of the essay but also the mechanical factors such as grammar or sentence structures. The problem matters for both students and teachers. Students and teachers need to find help to minimize the problem in teaching and learning Essay Writing such as the use of writing tool like Grammarly. The study aims to find out the advantages of grammarly is in helping students to write their essay, the drawbacks they face in using Grammarly and students’ response toward Grammarly. This study applies descriptive qualitative method to elaborate the analysis. It engages 15 students of Essay Writing subject purposely. Moreover, the research data were collected by two instruments, i.e. interview and questionnaires. Then, the findings show that students have positive view toward Grammarly as their writing assistance in their essay writing. Moreover, Grammarly some advantages to help students in writing their essay. However, the drawbacks that students face when using Grammarly could not be neglected.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most complex skills in English. The skill in organizing ideas into a paragraph or essay, and the skill of arranging grammatical sentences are also required. Nowadays, many teachers have implemented some media, techniques, and approaches to increase students’ motivation in writing classes. In the EFL classroom, teachers can also integrate writing with students’ cultural identity. This study investigates students’ perceptions of a digital narrative writing project based on local wisdom in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The writer applied a quantitative survey approach in this study, and the data were collected from participants who engaged in project-based digital narrative writing activities that combined local wisdom themes. The findings showed that students remarked on the digital narrative writing experience positively through four categories: affective (enjoyment and motivation), cognitive (learning benefits), cultural identity relevance, and technological usability. Students reported being more engaged, writing better stories, and feeling more connected to their culture. Even though some students had technical problems, most of them found the digital narrative writing project meaningful, creative, and useful for learning. The results show that the digital narrative writing project can improve students’ use of different media and support learning that connects to their culture in EFL classes. This has important meaning for how teachers design lessons, build digital skills, and include local culture in the curriculum.

Abstract

The Students’ Reflection on Hybrid Learning Environment at Higher Education Level post-COVID-19 Pandemic: Opportunities, Barriers, and Deal with Hybrid Learning. The implementation of remote learning and face-to-face leaning environment can be assumed as hybrid learning. It obtains its popularity since students and lectures are in the period of Covid-19 pandemic to endemic period. To systematize the hybrid learning, lectures need to be familiar with the kind of technology to create interactive learning activities in online learning and have physical activities in the conventional way or classroom activities. It also offers distinctive learning practices; students achieve technological and practical knowledge. Objectives: The study aims to explore the students’ reflection on hybrid leaning. The reflection covers the opportunities they obtain, barriers they face and how they deal with hybrid learning. Methods: The students’ reflection will be obtained through the questionnaire and observation during the onsite and remote learning activities. The observation will be conducted within 6 months in order to have eligible data. Findings: The writers hope that the further findings will portray the students’ reflection in implementation of hybrid classes. Moreover, it is expected to enlighten the effectiveness and simplicity of remote learning and onsite learning environments. Conclusion: The most significant effect is the success of teaching and learning goals, and it will be the endless program in educational areas.
