Abstract

The use of technology during the current pandemic facilitates the process of online teaching and learning activities. One of the digital applications that can support learning English is Khan Academy. Khan Academy offers educational videos and exercises in various contents. The application helps educators and students to meet the educational challenges faced in the current pandemic conditions. The use of Khan Academy has been implemented in many developing countries including Indonesia. The purpose of this Community Service activity is to find out the effect of using the Khan Academy application on learning English and inculcating good values in students. In the activity, the writers focus one to see the development of children character building and increase motivation to learn English. It was held at TBM Sanggar Baca Jendela Dunia Ciputat. The descriptive qualitative was applied to explore the results. It has two aspects of outcomes: using digital applications, children are expected to achieve reinforcement to improve English language skills, and children at Sanggar Baca Jendela Dunia are expected to obtain the positive development of character buildings which are enthusiasm, independence, and thoroughness in the English learning process. The use of this application is expected to have a lot of positive impacts for students to support academic and non- academic achievements, as well as in daily activities.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris siswa, khususnya dalam bidang public speaking berpidato dalam Bahasa Inggris (speech) masih rendah. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menghasilkan bahan ajar berupa buku dan video untuk mendukung proses pembelajaran berpidato dalam bahasa Inggris dan untuk mengetahui pengaruh positif dari kedua bahan ajar dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa khusunya berpidato. Penulis menggunakan bahan ajar berbentuk buku dan video pembelajaran pidato dalam Bahasa Inggris untuk mengetahui pengaruh positif bahan ajar tersebut terhadap meningkatnya kemampuan berpidato. Kegiatan melibatkan seluruh siswa di tingkat Madrasah Aliyah di Pondok Pesantren Nurul Quran, Bogor. Hasil kegiatan PkM, dapat disimpulkan bahwa modeling strategy melalui buku ajar dan video pembelajaran dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berbahasa inggris, khususnya kemahiran public speaking dalam berpidato Bahasa Inggris (speech), siswa dapat mengaplikasikan kemampuan berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris dalam kehidupannya sehari-hari secara berterima dan efektif, dan siswa mendapatkan penguatan dalam membangun dan meningkatkan rasa percaya diri yang merupakan karakter penting untuk dimiliki. Karakter memiliki rasa percaya diri ini diharapkan dapat memberikan banyak dampak positif bagi para santri untuk menunjang prestasi akademik maupun non-akademik.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat adalah salah satu unsur dalam Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi yang wajib dilaksanakan oleh setiap dosen pada tiap semesternya. Adanya tindakan perundungan, kurangnya rasa tenggang rasa dan perasaan saling mendukung di antara para remaja menjadi latar belakang utama dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada msyarakat ini. Artikel ini membahas kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang bertujuan meningkatkan kesadaran multikulturalisme di kalangan reamaja. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan oleh beberapa dosen dan mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang melalui pembuatan video dongeng dengan menggunakan stick puppets sebagai properti. hal ini ditujukan kepada tutor dan para peserta didik di Jampang English Village (JEV) Bogor. Melalui metode deskriptif analitis, data memperlihatkan beberapa pengaruh mendongeng terhadap keterampilan kognitif anak. Setelah menyaksikan video yang bersisi dongeng dengan menggunakan hand puppet, ditemukan adanya peningkatan keterampilan peserta dalam hal kerjasama, mendengarkan, pemerolehan bahasa, kreatifitas, imajinasi, dan kesadaran multikultural. Pengetahuan yang diperoleh melalui kegiatan pengabdian ini diharapkan dapat menciptakan semangat baru dalam meningkatkan motivasi dan menciptakan materi-materi terkait kesadaran multikultural, sebagai upaya mewujudkan situasi damai dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat.

Abstract

The application of digital tools has been used in educational institution including universities to strengthen the material delivery. They can be beneficial tools in COVID-19 pandemic condition as teachers' assistance. Due to these issues, this study was conducted to determine students' perspective on the implementation of screen recording video in virtual learning activities during Covid-19 pandemic. This study involved 50 participants of the sixth semester students of English department of Universitas Pamulang. To obtain the data, the writers distributed a questionnaire consisting 10 questions and interviewed 4 questions to the students related to the implementation of virtual learning in COVID-19 pandemic situation. The data analysis reveals that the students have top four positive responses of screen video recording in virtual learning: enhancing the quality of learning, helping students learn more effectively, enhancing students’ learning experience, students-teachers' engagement, and flexible time and place. They also find that teachers' assistance and guidance are still absolutely needed however beneficial screen recording video is.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the kinds of taboo and euphemism words among college students of faculty of letter at Universitas Pamulang, and the reasons why the students select to utter taboo or euphemisms. A qualitative analysis including would be conducted in this research. The respondents of this study were the fourth semester students (regular A class) taking the speaking 4 at English department of Pamulang University academic year 2018/2019. Out of 176 students of the population, 40 students (20 males and 20 females) will be chosen as the samples based on the purposive sampling. To collect the data, the writer used two kinds of instruments: an observation of students’ speaking conversation and interview. These instruments were administered to answer stated research questions. As a result, the writer found that most male students preferred uttering taboo words, and the female students seemed to utter euphemism instead of taboo words. The result was influenced by some factors. Theoretically, the research finding would enrich the teachers’ skills to introduce euphemism as a substitution to replace the use of taboo words in students’ conversation and assist students to utter proper words in social situation that leads politeness.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the kinds of code-mixing used by lecturers from some departments and the factors of using code mixing. This study was a descriptive qualitative analysis that attempted to describe the kinds of code-mixing and the factors. The participants of this study were lecturers from 4 different groups of Universitas Pamulang. The participants were selected based on the purposive sampling in order to support the research finding. The data were taken from questionnaire and observation on WhatsApp groups to seek the factors and to classify the types of code-mixing. As the results, the writers found the group of Pelatih TOEFL produced 15 congruent lexicalization, 4 insertion and 0 alternation. The group of Penelitian Internal Unpam produced 15 congruent lexicalization, 6 insertion and 2 alternation. The group of Sastra Unpam produced 9 congruent lexicalization, 10 insertion and 5 alternation. The group of Prodi Sasing produced 17 congruent lexicalization, 3 insertion and 5 alternation. In addition, the distribution of questionnaire resulted the factors of applying code-mixing on all WhatsApp groups. Bilingualism (38%), speaker and interlocutor (4%), situation (5%), vocabulary (46%) and prestige (8%) are the factors found in Pelatih dan Pengawas TOEFL group. Bilingualism (21%), speaker and interlocutor (11.11%), situation (22%), vocabulary (38%) and prestige (8%) are the factors found in Peenelitian Internal Unpam group. Bilingualism (48%), speaker and interlocutor (5%), situation (13%), vocabulary (34%) and prestige (0%) are the factors found in Sastra Unpam group. Bilingualism (55%), speaker and interlocutor (5%), situation (7%), vocabulary 67%) and prestige (12%) are the factors found in Sastra Unpam group.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic affects on education and leads to stress as a timeless problem in teaching process in schools or universities. Lectures need to find the joy of their teaching activities and make them comfort at working place by having adaptability acquired from surroundings. The study aims to find out the sources of stress among English lecturers and how they overwhelm the stressful situation. This study applies the descriptive qualitative method to elaborate the analysis. It also engages 6 EFL lecturers of English Department of Universitas Pamulang selected from some categories: working more than six years and showing the high level of stress. They are selected through the questionnaire distribution. Furthermore, the writers conducted an in-depth semi-structured interview to obtain the data. The interview focuses on seeking the two main points: to identify and describe the source of stress in teaching process during the pandemic and to enlighten aspects that assist the lecturers to have adaptability in the stressful circumstance. As the results, the participants share the factors why they get burnout within pandemic circumstances: E-learning system, other system changes, students’ low communication, workload and impromptu task; moreover, they share how to adapt with the situation they face: family relationship, positive personality, positive vibes, and working partners. These assist the lecturers to encourage themselves to work more.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this Community Service activity is to help parents to acquire the ability to speak English in different context tenses and help children with English assignments. PkM activities take place at Majlis Taklim Al-Fattah which is located in Serpong Terrace in South Tangerang; participants are members of associations in religious activities. There were 25 participants who had difficulties in helping children complete English assignments related to English grammar and the desire to speak English. The method to be applied is qualitative which is directed at elaborating the PkM results which are descriptive in nature. After the training process, we found two positive points, namely participants were able to recount their daily activities, past activities, and plans they would do in a short and correct way. They are able to arrange randomly arranged sentences into correct sentences according to the context they have studied. In addition, the results of the questionnaire show that parents are able to help their children's schoolwork in terms of grammar such as present and future tense. In the present simple, parents still have difficulty in distinguishing between -s and -es affixes. The rest, for the past simple, parents do not show significant ability due to the weakness of identifying the first and second verbs. Abstract

Di periode endemi saat ini, banyak para wirausahawan memulai untuk membuka usaha mereka yang diawali dengan usaha rumahan, tetapi kebanyakan dari mereka tidak begitu paham mengenai istilah-istilah dalam bahasa Inggris yang sering digunakan dalam kewiraushaan dan strategi yang harus mereka terapkan Tujuan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) untuk mensosialisasikan istilah-istilah dalam bahasa Inggris dalam kewirausahaan dan strategi bagaimana memulai usaha dan mengembangkan usaha. Metode dalam menjabarkan hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat dengan mendeskripsikan hasil kuesioner para peserta,secara eksplisit. Instrumen yang digunakan penulis adalah wawancara sebelum kegiatan sosialisasi dan kuesioner yang didistribusikan setelah kegiatan sosialisai. Sasaran kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini ditargetkan kepada anggota lembaga DIALEKTIKA sebanyak 30 peserta yang memiliki keanekaragaman latar belakang. Hasil kegiatan PkM menunjukan bahwa istilah jargon COD menempati posisi teratas dengan presentase 23% dari jumlah responden. Ini menunjukkan bahwa istilah COD sangat populer di berbagai macam bidang usaha yang diminati peserta. Selain itu, manfaat sosialisasi terkait istilah-istilah kewirausaahaan yaitu dapat membuka kesempatan untuk membuat bisnis.Kata  kunci:  Istilah-istilah bahasa Inggris, kewirausahaan, strategi
