Abstract

Background: The faculty of Dentistry Universitas Indonesia (FDUI) has implemented multiprofessional education (MPE) since the academic year of 2012/2013. Some concerns about facilitators and the achievement of students arose. This study aims (1) to describe the curriculum mapping, (2) to elaborate the perception of facilitators regarding the implementation of MPE, and (3) to assess the achievement among non-MPE and MPE groups in a particular subject. Methods: This research used a quantitative and qualitative approach. This research collected the data of achievement, perception of facilitators, and the curriculum in order to assess the implementation of MPE.Results: The curriculum consisted of common subjects or topics. There were some suggestions regarding the facilitators and the curriculum in the implementation of MPE. In line with one-way Annova, the mean score of students among Non-MPE (76.52±4.36), MPE_2012 (75.52±4.39), and MPE_2013 groups (75.46±4.66) were not statistically different with p-value = 0.154. Conclusion: The faculty has succeeded in compiling an integrated MPE curriculum. There are opportunities for an improvement in several areas. The academic achievement of MPE students is as good as Non-MPE students. The MPE group’s research proposals seemed to have a spirit of collaboration.

Abstract

Background: Inequality in health should be prevented. The aims of this study were to assess inequalities prevalent in tooth-brushing after lunch (TAL) and in tooth-brushing before sleep (TBS) among Koreans using the NMSC indicator and to assess the role of material, health behavioral, psychosocial, and workplace environmental (WPE) determinants in associating the indicator with tooth brushing activities. Methods: The data were from the 4th KNHANES with 6,710 workers and entrepreneurs from 19 to 54 year old, who were grouped into 12 social class positions. TAL and TBS were the outcomes. Data analysis was performed using a logistic regression sequence. The results were reported as OR and 95% CI. Results: The proportion of owner groups was higher for TBS than for TAL, whereas that of worker groups was higher for TAL than for TBS. The highest probability was shown by expert workers (TAL) and capitalists (TBS) among various models. WPE factors had the highest explanatory power for both. Conclusions: Non-gradient social class disparities related to tooth brushing were recognized for the Korean adults. The behavior of brushing teeth at two different times revealed a different pattern of social inequality regarding oral health. Thus, workplace-based oral health promotion programs should be implemented.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 2.2 billion people globally are affected by visual impairment, which significantly affects their dental and oral hygiene behaviors. Consequently, the prevalence of dental caries among visually impaired children remains high, primarily due to challenges in maintaining proper hygiene. This study aims to analyze differences in dental caries status among visually impaired children based on risk factors. Method: The study procedures were carried out using a cross-sectional design. The sample population comprised 94 students at the National Special School (SLB) A Pembina, who were selected using a purposive sampling method. Data collection was conducted in 2 stages. The first stage involved gathering information on risk factors through interviews regarding toothache experience, visits to the dentist, tooth brushing frequency, and fluoride toothpaste use. The second stage consisted of dental and oral examinations conducted by five trained investigators. Results: The overall prevalence of dental caries among visually impaired children was 42.6%, with a deft/DMFT index of 1.05/0.8. In addition, there were significant differences in dental caries status based on risk factors, such as toothache experience (p=0.001, ≤0.05, Pearson’s Chi-square, 95% CI), visits to the dentist (p=0.000, ≤0.05, Pearson’s Chi-square, 95% CI), tooth brushing frequency (p=0.000, ≤0.05, Pearson’s Chi-square, 95% CI), and fluoride toothpaste use (p=0.000, ≤0.05, Pearson’s Chi-square, 95% CI). Conclusion: Based on these results, the prevalence of dental caries among visually impaired children is relatively high. Caries experience is significantly associated with toothache experience, visits to the dentist, tooth brushing frequency, and fluoride toothpaste use.
