Abstract

Peace education can equip students with various skills to participate meaningfully in a democratic society. One of the skills that can be developed is peaceful conflict resolution. This research examines the role of teachers in developing a culture of peace through conflict resolution practices in the environment of Vocational High School. The method used is qualitative with a phenomenological model, involving 5 teachers who have received training in peace education implementation. The research results show that the values of peace have been integrated into various subjects through the teachers' concrete actions, especially in the form of self-regulation, interpersonal skills, and communication skills. The teachers demonstrated the ability to manage emotions, avoid and resolve conflicts, and create a peaceful and harmonious school environment. This research emphasizes the importance of conflict resolution education in the school curriculum to improve the quality of student interactions and reduce conflicts in schools. The findings of this study encourage the need to evaluate teaching materials so that peace values are clearly emphasized in the learning process, enabling schools to become strategic spaces for building a sustainable culture of peace.

Abstract

The future of the Indonesian is now seriously threatened by the high incidence of smoking behaviors among Indonesian adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with smoking behavior among high school students residing in tobacco-producing regions in Indonesia. Students' smoking behaviors, sociodemographic traits, and exposure to tobacco marketing were all gathered through a cross-sectional survey. In order to participate in this study, 210 junior high school students answered questions about their smoking habits. The results showed nearly one in five students reported currently smoking (19%), while 22.9% had experimented with smoking but had already quit. More than half of the students (51.9%) reported having received at least one offer to smoke, suggesting strong social exposure to smoking within their environment. Among students who smoked, the most common motivations were the appealing taste of cigarettes (35%) and the desire to appear cool (23%), while stress relief (33.3%) was the primary reason for continuing the behavior. These results highlight how crucial it is to apply evidence-based tobacco control measures in these areas in order to lower the prevalence of adolescents smoking. The findings have implication for educators and parents to monitor tobacco use and provide assistance in quitting tobacco usage.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze differences in social-emotional competencies between female and male students in vocational high schools in West Nusa Tenggara. The background of this study is based on the assumption that gender studies in social-emotional competencies need to be approached critically, rather than simplified into assumptions of natural differences. This study employs a descriptive comparative quantitative method with a sample of 711 vocational students selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using cross-tabulation and Mann–Whitney tests. The findings reveal that the majority of students are in the moderate category (67.4%), indicating that social-emotional competencies are present but not yet optimally developed, while 31.4% fall into the low category, reflecting a substantial proportion of students who still require targeted support. Statistical analysis shows significant gender differences in three SEL dimensions: self-awareness (p = 0.019), self-management (p = 0.000), and relationship skills (p = 0.036), suggesting that gender may influence how students develop and express specific social-emotional competencies. These findings highlight the need for more responsive and inclusive approaches to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) that consider gender-related differences without reinforcing stereotypes. Practically, this implies the importance of designing SEL interventions that are adaptive, equitable, and sensitive to diverse student needs in both instructional and counseling contexts.
