Abstract

In the Victorian England whose ideal woman was the Angel in the House, a devoted and submissive wife and mother, it would generally be unfortunate for women to be still unmarried past their reproductive years. Using feminist lens, this study compares the Jenkyns sisters (Deborah and Matty) of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford (1853) and Betsy Trotwood of Charles Dicken’s David Copperfield (1850). While aging and single, they are financially independent. Husbandless and childless, the Jenkyns sisters and Betsey could easily fall into the category of redundant women, but they skillfully manage the house and class relations the way the Angels in the House do.

Abstract

Written during the Victorian Era, Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford (1853) explores social issues related to gender. This study focuses on how the main characters of the novel, the Jenkyns sisters, navigate their loss resulting from being women and single. This qualitative research analyzes the narrative elements of the novel, especially its characters, conflicts and setting, and employs feminist literary criticism to scrutinize the gender relations and inequalities in the novel. Borrowing Kenneth J. Doka’s theory of disenfranchised grief, this study asserts how the community of spinsters and widows in the novel challenges the imposition of women’s identity as wives and mothers. However, while succeeding in managing lives outside of marriage and motherhood, the Jenkyn sisters struggle with grief that cannot be openly acknowledged nor socially validated. Such grief and efforts to conceal lead to psychosomatic symptoms. Remain unmarried, these middle-class women cannot escape social expectations of women in nineteenth-century England that the novel resolves their grief partly by making them a surrogate mother and wife.

Abstract

This research was carried out with the aim of analyzing (1) the structure of “Aib dan Nasib” with heuristic reding, (2) the village and its chaos in poverty according to Robert Chambers' view, and (3) the reasons why the village community experiences a chaotic life. This research was carried out using the literary sociology method with the help of the theory of poverty put forward by Robert Chambers and presented in a qualitative descriptive manner. This research is in the form of a literature study with the novel “Aib dan Nasib” as the main source or object of research. The results of this research prove that people in rural areas tend to experience poverty due to various factors such as proper poverty, helplessness, vulnerability in facing emergency situations, dependency, and alienation. People in villages also experience a messy life caused by the shackles of poverty that never escape. The tangled threads between events make their lives even more complicated because there is no way out that can be taken because of the limitations they have.
