Abstract

Abstract

Desorption of gold(III) in multi-metal system Au/Ni/Ag on amino silica hybrid (ASH) column have been studied. ASH was synthesized by sol gel process with sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) from rice husk ash (RHA) as precursor. ASH was synthesized by adding 3M of hydrochloride acid solution to the mixture of (3-aminopropyl)-trimethoxysilane and Na2SiO3 solution untill pH 7 (neutral). ASH was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Adsorption of multi-metal (Au/Ni/Ag) was carried out with a column technique. The adsorbed metal ions [Au(III), Ni(II), and Ag(I)] were quantitively using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Desorption of Au(III), Ni(II), and Ag(I) at ASH was conducted by using thioruea in hydrochloride solution with variation of concentration. Total desorption of metal ions was calculated based on AAS analysis. For desorption of multi-metal(Au / Ni / Ag), Au (III) was eluted using 1M HCL is 16,60%; using 0,5 M thiourea in 1M HCl is 57,45%, and with 1M thiourea in 1M HCl is 59,12%.

Abstract

Silica gel is well known as a material that may be used as adsorbent, host matrix for catalyst, etc. Hence, synthesis of silica gel from rice hull ash has been done by evaluation of the effect of medium acidity and organic group immobilized in the snythesis of silica gel.Synthesis of silica gel was done by adding sodium silicate solution from rice hull ash to hydrochloric acid until pH 3, 5 and 7. Immobilization of thiol group and amino group in silica was done by adding 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane or 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane to sodium silicate solution and hydrochloride acid solution until pH: 7. The products were characterized by X-ray deffractometer and FTIR Spectroscopy. Results showed that porousitas of silica increased with increasing medium acidity ( decreasing pH medium).Immobilization thiol or amino group in silica added a functional group on silica but did not destroy primary structure of silica gel.Key Words: Silica Gel, Rice Hull Ash, 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane.

Abstract

Synthetic dental fiber tape for fiber reinforcement (FRC) restoration is relatively costly and its availability is still limited in Indonesia, so natural dental fibers have been used as an alternative material. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of impregnation of various fiber tape toward the flexural strength and hardness of FRC. The materials used were natural Bombyx mori silk fibers (Indonesia), dental polyethylene tape (Construct Kerr, USA), dental Quartz tape (Quartz Splint UD, France), dental E-glass tape (Everstick TM, GC, Japan), silane coupling agent (Ultradent, Jordan), and composite resin (Denfil-Flow, USA). Five groups of samples consisted of FRC with various fiber tapes were prepared: unidirectional-silk, braided-silk, quartz, polyethylene, and E-glass. The five groups of FRC were tested to determine the flexural strength and hardness. The results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, followed by LSD test. The results showed that the highest flexural strength was in the quartz group (496.84 ± 109.14 MPa), while the lowest was in the braided-silk group (139.39 ± 4.30 MPa). The highest hardness property was in the unidirectional-silk group (141.29 ± 25.17 VHN), while the lowest was in the braided-silk group (139.39 ± 4.30 VHN). The ANOVA showed that various fiber tapes significantly influenced the flexural strength and hardness of FRC (p < 0.05). The LSD showed that the unidirectional-silk, braided-silk, and polyethylene groups demonstrated no significant difference. The LSD for hardness showed that the unidirectional-silk group had a significant difference with the other groups (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that various fiber tapes influenced the flexural strength and hardness of FRC. Natural silk fibers showed comparable flexural strength and hardness with the other fiber tapes.

Abstract

Acrylic resin is the material most often used as a base for dentures; however, acrylic resin has shortcomings in its biological properties as it does not have antimicrobial properties. ZnO is added to acrylic resin because of its antimicrobial properties. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles as a heat polymerization acrylic resin coating on the coating’s resistance to abrasion. A total of 24 acrylic resin samples were made, each measuring 13 x 13 x 2 mm. The acrylic resin was coated with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate), then with ZnO nanoparticles with varying concentrations of 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% in ethanol. ZnO nanoparticle coating was applied using the dip coating method. Subsequently, the samples were subjected to an initial roughness test, abrasion test, and final roughness test. The data obtained were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and LSD(0.05). The results showed that the mean change in roughness (μm) and standard deviation for groups I to IV were 0.11 ± 0.13, 0.08 ± 0.33, 0.1 ± 0.12, and 0.19 ± 0.15, respectively. The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that there was no significant difference in the roughness after the abrasion test (p > 0.05). Thus, zinc oxide nanoparticles can reduce surface roughness and are resistant to surface abrasion.

Abstract

The recovery of Au(III) in the Au/Cu/Mg system from mercapto-silica hybrid coated magnetite (SH/Fe3O4@SiO2) adsorbent has been investigated. This adsorbent characterized using FT-IR to determine functional groups, crystallinity study using XRD, surface morphology using SEM, material compositions with XPS, surface area using nitrogen adsorption, and TGA to study thermal stability. Adsorption of metal ions carried out with batch system for 30 minutes at a pH of 3. In the Au/Cu/Mg multi-metal system, Au(III) ions were easily desorbed (approximately 85%) by SH/Fe3O4@SiO2 adsorbent based on HSAB (Hard Soft Acid Base) theory that Au(III) ion is a softer metal than Cu(II) and Mg(II) where Au(III)>Cu(II)>Mg(II). The recovery of Au(III) ions was easily desorbed using thiourea 7% in 0,1 M HCl solution with the percentage of 79%. The process of SH/Fe3O4@SiO2 adsorbent separation after adsorption and recovery was very easy. The adsorbent could perfectly separate in 5 minutes using an external magnet. The SH/Fe3O4@SiO2 adsorbent can be reused on the adsorption-desorption process of Au(III) in the Au/Cu/Mg system approximately four times of cycle reactions.

Abstract

Modification of chitosan-coated magnetic material with quaternary ammonium chloride as adsorbent for Cr(VI) anions has been studied. The works included magnetic material (MM) separation from iron sand, magnetic material-chitosan (MM/Chit) synthesis, and attachment of quaternary ammonium groups from glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTMAC) on MM/Chit to produce MM/Chit/GTMAC with various mass ratios. Products were characterized with FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, and VSM. Adsorption studies were carried out in a batch system with pH, time, and initial Cr(VI) concentration variations. The unadsorbed Cr(VI) was analyzed with AAS, and the adsorbed Cr(VI) was calculated from the difference between initial and unadsorbed concentrations of Cr(VI). The results showed that MM/Chit/GTMAC was successfully synthesized, and adding GTMAC increased the stability of MM/Chit and shifted the optimum pH for Cr(VI) adsorption from 3.0 to 4.0. The study of kinetics and adsorption isotherm showed that the adsorption of Cr(VI) anion on the adsorbent MM/Chit/GTMAC (with the mass ratio of Chit to GTMAC 1:6) follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with the adsorption rate constant of 5.3 × 10−3 g mg−1 min−1 and Langmuir isotherms with the adsorption maximum capacity of 104.17 mg g−1, which has a potential to be applied for removing Cr(VI) from polluted wastewater.

Abstract

Background: Most of dental implants are accompanied by guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures. Collagen membrane which is the most widely used type of membrane in the GBR procedure has the disadvantage of not having antimicrobial properties, old bone formation, easy to tear, and soft so that it does not maintain the dimensions of the augmentation area. Bombyx mori L. fibroin has good mechanical properties and has the potential to be used as a pharmaceutical material that is biocompatible, antimicrobial, and stimulates bone growth. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of Bombyx mori L. fibroin coating on the mechanical properties of collagen membranes. Method: The samples consisted of the control group (group A) and the treatment group, the collagen membrane was coated using the Bombyx mori L dip-coating fibroin technique, namely group B (1 time coating process), group C (2 times coating process) and group D (3 times the coating process). Statistical analysis used one-way ANOVA (p
