Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of Edmodo in formative assessment and students' perceptions on the use of Edmodo writing. This study uses a basic interpretive design. An English teacher and seven students participated in this research. It used observations, interviews, and documentation to collect data to answer these two research questions. The findings showed that the Edmodo-assisted writing formative assessment builds teacher technological pedagogy, and content knowledge. The students’ responses are viewed from cognitive aspect. Furthermore, the students can improve and explore the ability to writing skills. From the emotional perspective, the students feel more enjoyable and enthusiastic when doing a formative test. Whereas in the affective perspective, the students seemed more interested in assessment manually by the teacher through individual correction analysis.

Abstract

Based on the researcher preliminary study, it was found that the flipped classroom models are used as learning models to assist students in facilitating grammar learning. This research aimed to investigate the process of using flipped classroom models in grammar teachings and to find out students' perceptions of grammar teaching using flipped classroom model. This research used qualitative approaches and design case study. Five students at high school participated as participants in the study. The researcher collected the data through observation and interview. The finding showed that the use of flipped classrooms could help students collaborate with each other between group members in formulating problem-solving provided by the teacher and can use class time to be more effective. In addition, flipped classrooms make the learning process easier to use, effective and useful. By using this learning model, most students can understand the material.

Abstract

This research is aimed to explore students’ YouTube-assisted vocabulary learning in the self-regulated learning context. This research was conducted with the participants of four students from a vocational high school in Karawang. This research used narrative inquiry approach; thus, the data were collected through interview, specifically semi-structured interview. The data of this research were analysed by thematic analysis method. This research has discovered that students would start to learn when they had spare time to use, they also had to keep on eye to the internet connection during their learning process, and lastly, they tried to recall the vocabulary they just learned after they finished their learning. Students also had some criteria for the videos they watched in their learning process. This research also found that students experienced some enjoyments in their YouTube-assisted vocabulary learning, although they were still reluctant to continue their learning.

Abstract

Language attitude takes a pivotal role in their language learning practice. This research aims to investigate the students' attitude toward English as supporting language at vocational high school context and describe the impacts of the attitude toward English. The data was collected through observation, questionnaire and open-minded interviews. Six 12th grade students participated in this research. The analysis was carried out through data reduction, display and verification. The findings revealed that the students believed in their future carrier they need English. as tools to compete in work field later. The conclusion is students’s attitude towards English for supporting language in studying at vocational high school is positif in each component of attitude. Beside that, the impact of students’ attitude towards English for vocational high school are lack of serious and have a problem in self-confidence. It could be seen during the learning process some students face difficulties in learning English and they are also feel nervous and afraid to make mistakes when they were asked by the teacher to speak. This research is expect to help the researcher and able to useful in develpoing the next research from the other aspect towards English.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate a teacher’s experiences and difficulties of Google Classroom-assisted teaching writing. This research used narrative inquiry as a research design. It used interview as the data collection technique to answer the research questions. One English teacher who taught in two grades of Vocational School in Karawang, Indonesia participated in this research. The finding shows that the teacher had particular ways to deliver the material assisted by Google classroom. To work with the Google Classroom, the teacher also used the PJBB Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh to deliver the material which was fit to school curriculum. To assess the students, the teacher used to ask the students to write down the answers of its task, and then they take the picture of its answers so they send it into Google Classroom. To conclude, this study shows that the internet data, device, student and teachers' ability, and so many other factors were given a big impact on online class, especially on Google Classroom-assisted teaching writing. The next researcher hopefully will conduct the research in the different focus of study, different learning media, and different classes or grades and also the next researcher hopefully conduct it with more participants. Because of this study just focused on writing narrative text lessons assisted by Google Classroom, the future research with another focus of study for example reading, speaking, listening, and so on hopefully will be conducted.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore pre-service English teachers’ experience in facing challenges and their coping strategies in managing synchronous virtual classrooms during practicum. This study employed narrative inquiry as its research design with thematic analysis for analyzing the data collected through semi-structured interviews with three pre-service English teachers. The study found that the pre-service English teachers encountered several problems in managing synchronous virtual classrooms, such as 1) students’ negative attitude; 2) insufficient instruction time; 3) lack of relationship or connection between teacher and students; 4) lack of proper feedback from mentor teacher and supervisor. Despite of several challenges mentioned above, the pre-service teachers had some strategies to deal with them, as follows 1) seeking emotional support from peers; 2) actively communicating with expert teachers; 3) solving problems through networking; 4) improving their strategies and skill. In summary, even though the pre-service English teachers faced several challenges, they could manage to overcome such challenges by identifying their needs and available access to improve their classroom situation. Keywords:  Challenges, Coping Strategies, Teaching Practicum, Virtual Classroom Management

Abstract

Drawing on data from a questionnaire and semi-structure interview, this case study investigates the Indonesia English lecturers’ perception toward teaching method and their personal experiences in implementing the methods in the teaching practice as well. Findings report that 89% of the participants keep implementing some methods which fit to the material. It is still reasonable to use in teaching practice since the methods could be aids to drive the teaching process in the classroom. The empirical evidence suggests that in the context of English foreign language teaching, the methods are highly believed as principle guiding points of teaching practices. The participants also argue that the teaching methods have facilitated and supported the lecturers elaborate such material and the ways to teach in real pedagogical activties. Furthermore, it can favor the lecturers in teaching to drive the classroom teaching activities run well.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate vocational students’ perception on learning technical vocabularies through Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy. This research provides two research questions, 1) In what ways Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy facilitate students in learning technical vocabulary? 2) What are the constraints of the students in the learning of technical vocabulary using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy? This research was using qualitative methodology and virtual classroom action research as a research design due to the pandemic of Covid-19. The participants of this research are grade 10th students of audio-video engineering from one of vocational high school in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. A chosen audio-video engineering journal was distributed in order for the students to explored and selected new important words and added the information they got from it to vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS) chart. And also semi-structured interviews have completed to know their perception on vocabulary self-collection strategy during learning technical vocabulary using VSS (selecting and nominating new words). The result of this study showed that vocabulary self-collection strategy had positive impacts to students’ vocabulary size, their ability to comprehend text and the constraints that the students had during the VSS process.

Abstract

This study aims to scrutinize tertiary students’ voices against the teacher/ lecturer who inspires them. This study elaborates on two classes of English Language Study Program as the respondents. The data use a questionnaire containing several questions that elaborated the teachers’ characteristics that can generate inspiration to the students. This study was designed by using the survey. Based on the data obtained it can be concluded that the teachers/ lecturers who inspire (tertiary) students are those who have the unambiguous characteristics of English teachers both characteristics and competencies. They are capable to develop concepts/ provide material that encouraged students easily comprehends the material, to color the process of learning in class with humorous atmosphere, and to make students laugh and refresh and to give suggestions as well.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan buku ajar yang digunakan dalam proses perkuliahan sastra. Wacana moralitas yang terkandung dalam karya sastra dapat menjadi isu menarik ketika buku ajar yang dipakai di Perguruan Tinggi ternyata belum memberikan amanat dan model yang baik dan kuat untuk ditiru. Mengingat pentingnya peranan buku ajar dalam proses transfer ilmu pengetahuan selain dari dosen, maka perlu kiranya dilakukan pengembangan buku ajar sastra yang lebih dominan memuat nilai-nilai moral demi menghasilkan sumber ajar yang lebih berkualitas dalam merubah sikap dan perbuatan pembacanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Research and Development yang disederhanakan sehingga hanya meliputi tiga tahap utama, yaitu (1) studi pendahuluan, (2) perumusan dan pengembangan produk, dan (3) validasi dan diseminasi produk. Sebagai tambahan, penelitian ini berfokus pada buku ajar bermuatan nilai-nilai moral bagi mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Semester V pada Mata Kuliah Basic Analysis of Poetry di Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang. Produk pengembangan buku ajar untuk mata kuliah Basic Analysis of Poetry di Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang memiliki rerata total analisis hasil validasi dan ujicoba kelompok kecil di atas 80%, sehingga hal tersebut dapat dikategorikan valid dan layak.
