Abstract

AbstractResearch on media language has still attracted a great deal of attention from discourse analysts due to the fact that the news delivered may vary, following the issues growing in society. This study, then, concentrated on the news reports regarding the issue of KPK vs. Polri conflict in three selected online newspapers, namely The Jakarta Post, the Jakarta Globe, and Tempo.Co. By adopting Bell’s (2007) work, the study analyzed the news text structure at the discourse level, where it dealt with the process of inclusion and exclusion in the headline, lead, and news scheme (contents). The data revealed that while The Jakarta Post (JP) tended to be objective in delivering the news in relation to Budi Gunawan’s case, the discursive strategy was practiced by The Jakarta Globe (JG) and Tempo through the news text structure at the discourse level. JG, in that case, gave the positive appraisal to Budi Gunawan (Polri) more than to KPK. Tempo, on the other hand, preferred to highlight the role of President Joko Widodo on Budi Gunawan’s case. In conclusion, the issue of media partiality in the news reports, especially on KPK vs. Polri conflict, can still be found even though it exactly opposes to journalism ethics and standards. Owing to this, it is suggested that media should pay more attention to the neutrality and objectivity in every news report. Keywords: CDA, Media, Partiality, Representation

Abstract

This research aims to identify the illocutionary act performed by the main character in The Woman in the Window movie. This movie tells the story of Anna Fox, the main character with agoraphobia. The researchers are interested to find out the types of illocutionary act in the utterances of a person suffering from an anxiety disorder. Qualitative research and content analysis are used as the methodology. The data are collected from the movie and analyzed through some steps. The theory of Searle (1976) is applied to analyze the data. The findings reveal that four types of illocutionary act:18 assertives, 6 directives, 1 commisives, and 5 expressives utterances are used by the main character in attempting to investigate a murder. The purposes of the illocutionary act are to conclude, to state as assertive utterances, to ask, to request, to order, to command, to beg as directives utterances, to make a duty to herself as commisives utterances, and to apologize, to dislike, to thank as expressive utterances. The dominant utterance used was assertives which carries the value of true or false. It indicates that the main character was trying hard to convince the police officer of what she said was true. Interestingly, only 1 commissive utterance was used to prove what she saw was true. It explains the condition of the main character with agoraphobia.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types and factors that cause changes in meaning of certain words. 10 news articles were chosen as the data that were taken from Republika, a national online newspaper in Indonesia. To collect and analyze the data, this study involves several steps, among others are skimming to find out the words undergoing semantic change, classifying the words into several types of semantic change proposed by Hollman (2009a),  finding out the causes of semantic change based on Chaer’s (2009) framework, and drawing a conclusion based on the result of the study. The results showed that there were 48 words undergoing semantic change, and these words were then classified into 6 types of semantic changes, namely generalization, specialization, amelioration, pejoration, metaphor, and metonymy. In addition, all the words undergoing semantic change were motivated by several factors, including association, field of use, the development of lexical item use, socio-cultural factor, and ellipsis. This study is expected to be contributed to the field of semantics, both in the teaching-learning process and the research study on semantics. Besides, the result of this study may become one of the references for those who are interested in how the language is used in journalism.
