Abstract

The articles in al-Imam strongly influenced its readers not only in Riau, but also in Minangkabau and Malaysia. In response to the cultural background of the traditionalist and conservative Malay community, the magazine voiced the spirit of Islamic reform. For example, one of its contributors, ai-Hadi, stressed the urgency of education and reform for the Malay community, and fought strongly for practices not regarded as everyday Islam. Due to its broad reaching influence, the magazine played a pivotal role in the realization and continuation of religious and intellectual reform in Indonesia.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v10i3.624

Abstract

This article critically examines how law and policy in Malaysia operate not only as instruments of governance, but also as mechanisms of exclusion, particularly at the intersections of citizenship, religion, gender, and identity. Drawing on the landmark report Washing the Tigers (Equal Rights Trust & Tenaganita, 2012) and utilizing a rights-based, interdisciplinary framework, the study reveals how Malaysia’s dual legal system, ethno-religious nationalism, and moral governance produce a stratified regime of belonging and legal recognition. Through qualitative discourse analysis and a postcolonial theoretical lens, the article explores three key domains: (1) stratified citizenship and racialized statehood; (2) religious governance and the erosion of pluralism; and (3) gendered moral regulation and the criminalization of difference. The findings demonstrate that discrimination in Malaysia is not incidental but structural—codified into law and normalized through ideology. The study concludes by calling for a radical reconfiguration of the legal and normative foundations of citizenship in Malaysia, toward a plural, inclusive, and rights-based polity. This article contributes to broader discussions on legal pluralism, postcolonial statecraft, and the politics of difference in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the leadership behavior of the madrasa principal in internalizing the religious values of the symbolic interactionalism perspective in the madrasa. This research was conducted using a phenomenological type of qualitative approach, in which researchers used interviews, observations, and documentation to obtain data in the field. The data analysis was carried out circularly through data presentation, data reduction, and concluding. The results showed that the leadership behavior of the madrasa principal in internalizing religious values from the symbolic interactionalism perspective was reflected in ritual practices as religious symbols that were displayed personally and collegially. In addition, sincerity is used as the basis for his perpetuation at the madrasa. This study implies that religious values must be internalized in every managerial activity in the madrasa to achieve the desired goals.
