Abstract

Wind energy is a resource that is abundant, environmentally friendly, and renewable, therefore it has the potential to be developed. Savonius vertical axis type is suitable for application in low wind speed conditions. The Savonius wind turbine has good self-starting so that it is able to rotate the rotor even though the wind speed is low, besides that the torque it produces is relatively high. This study aims to determine how differences in OR affect the performance of Savonius turbines with an aspect ratio (AR) of 2. The experimental method was applied in this research to investigate the characteristic Cp of the model using the wind tunnel with different overlap ratios of 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3. The wind turbine model that has been made using a 3D printing process made of PLA + material. The results obtained in each OR test are the maximum Cp value for the variation OR 0.1, which is 0.121, OR 0.15, the maximum Cp value obtained is 0.213, OR 0.2, the maximum Cp value is 0.245, OR 0.25, the maximum Cp value is 0.224 and OR 0.3, the maximum Cp value is 0.210. Based on the five overlap variations, the maximum Cp ratio is obtained at OR = 0.2, namely Cp = 0.245 and TSR = 0.7. The OR value of 0.2 is able to maximize turbine power and minimize negative torque because the flow through the overlap area can maximally direct wind power to the maximum backward blade.

Abstract

Applying science and technology encourages innovation, increasing development productivity, independence and national competitiveness. Indonesia has a science and technology area named Science Techno Park (STP). Maturity measurement is an indicator of the level of an STP to apply science and technology for the welfare of society. There are three levels of maturity for STP, which are low (pratama), middle (madya), and high (utama). Before entering the best maturity level, STP must go through various kinds of preparation and fulfil the elements contained in it. The community service activity team at Universitas Andalas conducted a web seminar (webinar) to socialise the maturity assessment for STP Unand from the academic side. The webinar invited two experts on STP maturity measurement. One of the primary assessments is the number of products produced that are expected to come from the results of academic research. This activity can help STP Unand prepare to increase its maturity to a high level.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to design and develop a torque measurement device using a braking system and a rotational speed measurement tool for a Savonius turbine shaft, applied in a wind tunnel, with data acquisition controlled by an Arduino Uno microcontroller. The methodology employed in this research is the design and build method. The testing results indicate that the torque measurement device controlled by the Arduino Uno functions effectively. Comparing the results of braking force measurements using manual methods and data acquisition revealed a 2, 231 % error. Additionally, the rotational speed measurements using a tachometer and those using an encoder controlled by the Arduino Uno showed a small error of 0,59 %. Data were continuously monitored on a laptop screen during testing. Thus, this device can be utilized as an auxiliary measurement tool to assess the performance of a Savonius turbine
