Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze Bundo Kanduang in the success of the Covid-19 vaccination in West Sumatra. Vaccination progress is slow, so that West Sumatra became the second-lowest rank out of 34 provinces in Indonesia in administering the first and second doses of vaccine. This slow process is caused by several things, namely the limited stock of vaccines, the low acceptance of vaccines, and the absence of sanctions for vaccine refusals. The last two things are undoubtedly social challenges that can hinder program recovery in West Sumatra. Therefore, the active role of local actors such as Bundo Kanduang, the term for married women in Minangkabau, is needed to overcome these challenges. She became one of the leading local actors because the Minangkabau community in West Sumatra adheres to a matrilineal culture. This paper uses a qualitative method using primary and secondary data. To help interpret the data, we use the concept of gender identity. This concept identifies roles based on the identity and position of women in the social structure. This paper finds that the Minangkabau people believe that Bundo Kanduang is an influential figure so that Bundo Kanduang has the potential to succeed in the vaccination program in West Sumatra. Bundo Kanduang can play a role in the domestic and public spheres as an educator and model in the family and the community regarding Covid-19 vaccination.

Abstract

Adolescents are faced with many problems related to reproductive health, so adolescents need to know to be able to face these challenges. However, the knowledge of adolescents in Indonesia is still low, especially in terms of ways to protect themselves against reproductive health risks, such as preventing unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, and AIDS. The provision of education needs to be done to address adolescent reproductive health problems. Educational activities related to reproductive health at MTsS Pesantren Thawalib Padang have never been conducted. The students MTsS are the right target group to be able to provide information related to reproductive health. The objective of this service activity is to enhance students' understanding of reproductive health, enabling them to cultivate a positive and responsible approach when addressing the sexual and reproductive changes that transpire within them. The approach employed involves student outreach and the placement of informative posters in their dormitories. The augmentation in students' knowledge was assessed using a questionnaire consisting of 15 questions before and after the activity. Data analysis was conducted through a paired sample t-test, a statistical method that compares the means of two related groups to determine if there is a significant difference between them. After the activity was carried out, there was an increase in the average level of knowledge before (pre-test), 40.63 to 49.76 after (post-test), providing education with a p-value of 0.000. It can be concluded that there is an increase in knowledge after adolescent reproductive health education. It is hoped that students can access reproductive health information from the posters displayed on the dormitory walls.

Abstract

Teenage girls are at risk of experiencing anemia because they menstruate every month. Anemia that is not treated immediately can negatively impact the short and long-term. In the long term, the impact of anemia can also affect pregnancy. Pregnancy with anemia will increase the risk of having a baby with a low birth weight and the risk that the child born will grow up to be stunted. So, women need to prevent anemia as early as possible. Education regarding the prevention of anemia has yet to be carried out at MTsS Pesantren Thawalib, and students have not taken Blood Supplement Tablets (BST) once a week. MTsS female students who menstruate every month are the right target group to be given education and health information related to preventing anemia. This service activity aims to increase female students' knowledge regarding anemia prevention. The methods used were counseling, putting up posters, giving BST, distributing pocketbooks, and distributing BST drinking calendars. The extension activities began with a pre-test and post-test to measure female students' knowledge before and after the education on anemia prevention. There was an increase in the average knowledge before 5.26 (pre-test) to 7.87 (post-test) after being given counseling with a p-value of 0.000. This shows that the anemia prevention education that has been carried out can increase the level of knowledge of female students. Students and schools should optimally utilize poster media, pocketbooks, and BST drinking calendars. With this service activity, female students can prevent anemia by regularly consuming BST once a week. Support is needed from MTsS Pesantren Thawalib Padang to monitor the student's compliance with BST consumption by checking the BST drinking calendar distributed to each student.

Abstract

Background. Adolescent smoking can lead to various health problems. The percentage of adolescents smoking in rural areas (4.34%) is higher than in urban areas (3.14%). Aim. The study aimed to determine the difference in the role of parental factors on adolescent smoking behavior in rural and urban areas. Method. The study used a cross-sectional comparative design. Conducted in June-July 2024 at one rural high school and one urban high school. The sample amounted to 57 respondents in each school with simple random sampling technique. Data analysis used Mann-Whitney test to test the difference between the two regions. Result. It was found that adolescent smoking behavior was more in rural areas (63.2%) than urban areas (33.3%). Factors associated with both regions include maternal education (p=0.001 and p=0.001), parental income (p=0.003 and p=0.016), and parental influence (p=0.028 and p=0.025). Only paternal education (p=0.026) and maternal occupation (p=0.003) were associated in urban areas. There were different factors between the two regions including mother's education (Sig=0.033) and parents' income (Sig=0.009). Differences in factors between urban and rural areas were found in maternal education, parental income and attitudes towards smoking policies. Parents need to be more active in monitoring children's behavior, providing education about the dangers of smoking, and being a positive example by creating a smoke-free home environment.

Abstract

In some areas in Padang City, we still often hear parents who have toddlers taking their children to a traditional birth attendant for a massage for various reasons. In addition, the baby's mother does not yet have independent skills in doing massage to babies. Baby massage is a tactile stimulation that has physiological effects in the body. Baby massage can also cause the baby's interaction with the mother to be more positive, the baby to be calmer and his sleep patterns to be more regular. Serunai Posyandu is one of the posyandu that has never received education about baby massage. The purpose of this service is to introduce proper baby massage to mothers who have babies at the Posyandu Serunai, so it is hoped that mothers can apply good and correct baby massage at home to stimulate baby growth and development. The method used in this activity is counseling and demonstration of baby massage. Before the activity begins, an initial survey is carried out, then the implementation of the activity is carried out with counseling, and demonstration of the correct way of baby massage. Abstract

There has been an increase in the number of adolescents aged 15-24 worldwide infected with HIV. A comprehensive understanding of HIV-AIDS is crucial in improving access to HIV services and bringing about behavioral changes to reduce risks. Early prevention through health education is important to curb HIV/AIDS cases. Specifically, peer counselor training for HIV/AIDS has not been conducted at SMPN 35 Padang, hence the necessity for such training. The objective of this activity is to enhance the knowledge of peer counselors regarding HIV/AIDS so that they can effectively counsel their peers. The activity will take place at SMP Negeri 35 Padang, specifically in Seberang Padang, Padang Selatan Sub-district, Padang City. Methods employed in this activity include guidance and counseling, brainstorming, games, practicing using health promotion media, and group discussions. Twenty-three peer counselor participants will undergo this training. The outcome of the training indicates an increase in the knowledge of peer counselors regarding HIV/AIDS prevention at SMPN 35 Padang. Before the training (pre-test), the average knowledge level was 6.57, and after the training (post-test), it rose to 9.13, with a p-value of 0.000. Abstract

The transition of children to adulthood through adolescence tends to be more daring to take risks so that it has an impact on reproductive health problems such as promiscuity leading to premarital sex, abortion, and the emergence of HIV-AIDS. So far, the government has carried out prevention through the Youth Care Health Service (PKPR) and has been implemented throughout Indonesia, including the city of Padang. However, the scope of services provided is still low. This study was conducted to examine the knowledge of high school students in the use of PKPR in Padang City in 2020. It was carried out through a cross-sectional approach at Padang City High School in March – October 2020. 145 students were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that there was a significant average difference between knowledge on the use of PKPR. For the use of PKPR to be increased and maximized, and educational promotion program is needed about the use of PKPR for adolescents by stakeholders and the government considering that knowledge and utilization of PKPR by adolescents is still low.
